Book excerpt: Athletic administrators in a Christian school setting have an unusual amount of influence over large portions of the student body via their influence on coaches. This study investigated the possibility of a correlative relationship between how varsity team head coaches perceive the degree of transformational leadership behaviors of their athletic administrators and their own coaching efficacy. Transformational leadership behaviors could be the most relevant leadership style for modern society while the benefits of coaching efficacy range from an increase in job satisfaction to an increase in student-athlete satisfaction with the athletic experience. A correlation between athletic administrator leadership and the efficacy of their coaches could provide significant insight into ensuring that the student-athlete experience is positive. Utilizing the Global Transformational Leadership scale and the Coaching Efficacy Scale II – High School Teams, 171 varsity head coaches of team sports were surveyed regarding the perceptions of the athletic administrators they work for in Christian high schools. Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation was used to correlate the single scale scores of the Global Transformational Leadership scale and the Total Coaching Efficacy Scores of the Coaching Efficacy Scale II – High School Teams. A moderately positive statistically significant relationship was found between the varsity head coaches’ perception of their athletic administrator’s transformational leadership behaviors and their own coaching efficacy. These findings have implications for how athletic administrators lead their coaches, and what behaviors school leaders should encourage in their athletic administrators.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship and difference between how NCAA Division I, team sport student-athletes perceive their own leadership behaviors and how their head coaches perceive the same student-athletes' leadership behaviors. In addition, further analysis examined perceptions between student-athletes and head coaches based on the student-athletes' gender and academic year in school. The study included 121 NCAA Division I, team sport student-athletes and their respective head coaches from two institutions in the Midwest. One of the institutions was a medium sized, four-year, co-educational private university and the second was a large sized, four-year, coeducational public university. The first research question examined the demographic profile of the collegiate student-athletes participating in this study. The second research question studied the relationship between how NCAA Division I student-athletes perceived themselves demonstrating the Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2008; Kouzes & Posner, 2013; Kouzes & Posner, 2014) and their respective head coaches' perceptions of these behaviors. Using Pearson product-moment correlation, three significant relationships existed between student-athletes and their head coaches for Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, and Enable Others to Act. The third research question undertook paired samples t-tests to investigate the difference between how NCAA Division I student-athletes perceived themselves as demonstrating the Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2008; Kouzes & Posner, 2013; Kouzes & Posner, 2014) and how their respective head coaches perceived them demonstrating these behaviors. Paired samples t-tests revealed significant differences between student-athletes and head coaches for each practice, Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. The fourth research question explored the difference between how NCAA Division I female and NCAA Division I male student-athletes perceived themselves as demonstrating the Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2008; Kouzes & Posner, 2013; Kouzes & Posner, 2014) and how their respective head coaches perceived them demonstrating these behaviors. The researcher used ANOVAs and paired samples t-tests to analyze the question. ANOVAs revealed statistically significant differences for the practices of Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. Paired samples t-tests revealed statistically significant differences for both genders with all Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership. The final question studied the difference between how NCAA Division I student athletes, by academic year in school, perceived themselves as demonstrating the Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2008; Kouzes & Posner, 2013; Kouzes & Posner, 2014) and how their respective head coaches perceived them demonstrating these behaviors. Similar to the fourth question, the researcher used ANOVAs and paired samples t-tests to analyze the data. ANOVAs revealed seven significant differences for four of the practices, Model the Way, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. In addition, paired samples t-tests showed differences in 18 out of a possible 20 cases involving academic year in school and The Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership. In conclusion, scores between student-athletes and coaches for Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, and Enable Others to Act showed a small, positive relationship; therefore, as student-athletes' scores increased so did their head coaches' scores. ANOVAs revealed significant mean differences in scores between female student athletes and their respective head coaches to male student-athletes and their head coaches. For all five practices, paired samples t-tests showed that the difference between mean student-athletes scores and mean head coaches scores were significant and that gender was not a differentiator when comparing scores for the practices. The independent variable with the most influence was academic year in school. Six-of-the-seven significant findings revealed smaller mean differences in scores between the upper-level student-athletes and coaches compared to lower-level student-athletes and coaches. Finally, significant differences existed in 18 of 20 possible cases comparing the mean scores of student-athletes to their head coaches for the Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership when examining student-athlete academic year in school.

Book excerpt: Throughout the sport and exercise psychology literature, one topic that has been given increased attention is the leadership of athletes. Prior work has focused on the coach as a primary source of leadership for athletes and how that leadership can affect various student-athlete outcomes (Coleman, 1961; Gould, Chung Smith, & White, 2006; Smoll & Smith, 1989, 2006). These investigations have provided a wealth of information regarding coaches' influence over athletes in a number of different domains, such as motivation (Eccles,1996; Jowett, 2008; MacLean, 2012; Mageau & Vallerand, 2003), persistence (Calvo et al., 2010; Ryan & Deci, 2000), and performance (Gearity & Murray, 2011; Gillet, Vallerand, Amoura, & Baldes, 2010). Lacking the same depth of examination is the relationship between coaches and other educational leaders in an athlete's life that would provide much needed insight into their performance in an academic setting.More specifically, there is almost no research examining the relationships between coaches and teachers as they "co-lead" student-athletes. Given that teachers have been identified as one of the prime drivers of student achievement (Darling-Hammond, 1997) and coaches have been identified as one of the critical influences on student behavior (Smith, Smoll & Cummings, 2009) the lack of empirical evidence for the leadership dyad of teacher-coach on student-athlete outcomes is unfortunate. Seizing the opportunity to advance our understanding of the relationship dynamics and ecology of leaders in the inner-city high schools (Khalifa, 2012) will provide a more nuanced and comprehensive picture of the environment being established for Minority student-athletes.If educators (teachers and coaches) are similarly connected by the common goal of producing a successful student-athlete, a careful examination of their relationships is clearly in order. In other words, if we can begin to understand what the leaders think about each other-which is undoubtedly related to the way they treat each other-then we start to gain further insight into the relational ecology within which the minority student-athlete flourishes or flounders (Khalifa, Dunbar, & Douglas, 2013). Therefore, the overarching goal of my dissertation work is to address this gap in the literature by investigating the mutual perceptions of and behaviors between teachers and coaches as a precursor to understanding minority student-athlete outcomes in inner-city environments.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This quantitative study sought to determine the relationship between high school coaches' leadership behaviors and their athletes' self-efficacy and grit. Specifically, this study sought to determine whether the training and instructions, democratic behavior, autocratic behavior, social support, or positive feedback of a coach impacted a student-athletes' self-efficacy and grit. This research also explored whether ethnicity and gender influenced perceptions. Survey data were collected from 378 former high school athletes from a public university in a rural areas in the southerner portion of the United States and 197 responded. Findings indicated that student-athletes' perceptions of their former high school coaches ' leadership behaviors did influence their self-efficacy and grit. In addition, the findings also indicated student-athletes' perceptions of coaches' leadership behaviors were also influenced by the students' ethnicity or gender. Implication for practice highlighted the importance of the student-athlete and coach relationship and how this relationship can impact student-athlete self-efficacy and grit.

Book excerpt: The researcher sought out to analyze the perceived leadership style of a collegiate coach for an elite level collegiate volleyball program, and how athletes within that program perceive those behaviors. The purpose of the current study was to compare the self-perceived leadership behaviors of a head coach at the collegiate level and compare this self-perception to the athlete’s perception of the coach’s behaviors and leadership style. The Coaching Behavior Score for Sport (CBS-S) was administered to the collegiate student-athletes and support staff members once the season was completed. The self-perceived survey of the Leadership Scale for Sport (LSS) was administered once to only the Head Coach after the season was completed. Results from the LSS showed higher scores in Training and Instruction and Positive Feedback. Results also showed lower scores in Democratic Behavior and Autocratic behavior. The subgroup which was scored around average was Social Support. Results from the CBS-S showed significant scores confirming the coach’s self-perception of leadership in the subscale groups of physical training and conditioning, technical skills, and competitive strategies. The results from the CBS-S and LSS offered a unique finding where the Head Coach the lower end scores in the subgroups Democratic and Autocratic behavior, the CBS-S results showed how the participants perceived the Head Coach higher in the subscale groups Personal Rapport, Goal Setting, and Mental Preparation. These results provide insight into a leader who can achieve a high level of task-oriented behaviors while also being perceived to be athlete oriented.

Through an in-depth interview process with eight principals, perceptions regarding their leadership or performance coach's effectiveness were explored using the CLEAR Coaching Model as a conceptual framework. Participants shared experiences through participation in the School Support Program hosted by the Arkansas Leadership Academy. Five significant themes emerged from this study: 1) the coaching relationship impacts effectiveness, 2) a working alliance is needed to ensure desired outcomes, 3) understanding school culture and current reality are necessary before coaching can begin, 4) the coach's ability to ask questions influences the perception of success in the coaching experience, and 5) professional learning experiences with the addition of a coach are more successful.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the research was to begin testing assumptions about coaches' leadership and team communication by starting with examination of the relationship between a head coach's perception of his leadership behavior and his perception of the effectiveness of his team's communication. The sample in the study consisted of fifty NCAA Division I Men's Head Hockey Coaches during the 2006-2007 season. Demographic data reported included the following: the participants' age, education level, nationality, number of year as a head coach, number of years as an assistant coach, 2006-2007 record, and number of years as head coach at their current school. A survey methodology was used to test three hypotheses and combined two scales used in similar research; The Leadership Scale for Sport (Chelladurai & Saleh, 1980) and The Scale for Effective Communication in Team Sports (Sullivan & Felts, 2003). Results indicated that coaches who regularly provide training and instruction perceive their team members to accept each other, have distinct identities, and engage in positive conflict. In addition results showed that coaches who regularly provide positive feedback perceived their team members to accept each other and engage in positive conflict.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation was to a) examine the correlational relationships between Canadian university athletes' perceptions of coach leadership behaviours and their perceptions of positive developmental outcomes (e.g., life skills) and negative experiences related to university sport, and b) explore how coach leadership behaviours and the associated developmental outcomes and negative experiences were described by both coaches and athletes. Data for this dissertation were collected over four stages. In Stage One, an online survey was used to collect data from a pan-Canadian sample (n = 605) of university athletes. In Stage Two, semi-structured open-ended interviews were conducted with fifteen university athletes. In Stage Three, semi-structured open-ended interviews were conducted with fourteen university coaches. In Stage Four, an online survey was used to collect data from a second pan-Canadian sample of university athletes (n = 498). Five articles were written to address the purpose of this dissertation. In Article One, data from two pan-Canadian samples of athletes were used to modify and confirm a new measurement tool known as the University Sport Experience Survey (USES). The USES provides a reliable and factorially-valid instrument for measuring development in university sport. In addition, Article One provided the first operational definitions of the positive developmental outcomes and negative experiences that could be reliably and validly assessed in a university sport context. Article Two qualitatively explored athletes' perceptions of the developmental outcomes associated with their participation in university sport, as well as their perceptions of transfer. Results provided additional support for certain USES categories to be used for understanding positive development within the context of Canadian university sport programs. Further, results suggested university sport programs offer rich opportunities for developing skills, qualities, experiences, and relationships needed to become functioning members in our society. In Article Three, quantitative survey data were used to assess the cross-sectional relationships between athletes' perceptions of their coaches' leadership behaviours and outcomes from the USES. Coach leadership behaviours were conceptualized within the Full Range Leadership Model and assessed using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. Findings showed that transformational coaching was generally related to positive developmental outcomes and inversely related to athletes' negative experiences in sport. Moreover, coaches' passive/avoidant behaviors were commonly related to athletes' negative experiences in university sport. Contrary to expectations, passive/avoidant coaching behaviors were also positively related with a number of positive developmental outcomes. Article Four qualitatively assessed athletes' perceptions of who they believed was responsible for their positive development within the university sport context. Athletes specified other athletes, the head coach, the coaching staff, and their parents as the people who influenced their positive development within the context of university sport. Notably, athletes felt they themselves were the ones who contributed the most to their own development. Article Five qualitatively explored coaches' perceptions of and strategies for fostering their athletes' positive development through university sport. The coaches believed there were inherent conditions surrounding university sport that facilitated positive development. However, the coaches maximized their athletes' development by establishing a support network, building team culture, and empowering their student-athletes by teaching them fundamental skills related to self and social regulation. Together, the five articles make novel theoretical and practical knowledge contributions to the field of positive development through sport, and set a precedence for positive development research in university sport, as well as other emerging adult sport contexts.

Book excerpt: In this intrinsic case study, the researcher sought to explore athletic directors’ leadership styles with their coaches’ and administrators’ workplace satisfaction at a Christian-affiliated college in the Southwestern United States. The study explored which leadership style is likely to encourage motivation (i.e., achievement, recognition, growth) and hygiene factors (i.e., policies, supervision, work conditions), which could potentially increase or decrease job satisfaction. The data collection method was semistructured interviews conducted with athletic department personnel. The researcher transcribed and quality-checked the interviews against the audio recordings. The transcripts were member-checked by sharing them with each of the study participants. The researcher analyzed the data using Dedoose, an online qualitative software, and conducted a thematic analysis using the six steps developed by Braun and Clarke (2006). Key findings from this study are that there is no clear-cut approach to leadership, and that the most valuable thing that a leader can do is to know the employees and cater to their leadership needs. A leader may have a predominate leadership style, and it is best to use that style until the leader realizes that employees need something different. Although situational leadership was not listed by the employees, there were at least four different leadership styles that were listed by the participants in this study, with transformational leadership descriptors being the most prevalent.
