Book The Printed and the Built

Download or read book The Printed and the Built written by Mari Hvattum and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Printed and the Built explores the intricate relationship between architecture and printed media in the fast-changing nineteenth century. Publication history is a rapidly expanding scholarly field which has profoundly influenced architectural history in recent years. Yet, while groundbreaking work has been done on architecture and printing in the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and the twentieth century, the nineteenth century has received little attention. This is the omission that The Printed and the Built seeks to address, thus filling a significant gap in the understanding of architecture's cultural history. Lavishly illustrated with colourful and eclectic visual material, from panoramas to printed ephemera, adverts, penny magazines, early photography, and even crime reportage, The Printed and the Built consists of five in-depth thematic essays accompanied by 25 short pieces, each examining a particular printed form. Altogether, they illustrate how new genres communicated architecture to a mass audience, setting the stage for the modern architectural era.

Book The Bibliographical Decameron

Download or read book The Bibliographical Decameron written by Thomas Frognall Dibdin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bibliomania, the almost obsessive collecting of rare books and early editions by the aristocracy, which peaked in 1812 with the sale of the Valdarfer Boccaccio, was fuelled in no small part by the work of the bibliographer Thomas Frognall Dibdin (1776-1847). His most famous book, Bibliomania, popularised the word's use in England. The present work was first published in three volumes in 1817 and may be considered a continuation of Bibliomania in both style and content. Using a dialogue format with extensive footnotes, it covers all aspects of bibliography from early illuminated manuscripts and printed books through to contemporary book collectors and auctions. The work is notable for the number and quality of its illustrations. Volume 3 presents accounts of book collectors and auctions since 1811, and bibliographical and general indexes to the whole work. Dibdin's Bibliomania (revised edition, 1811) and his Reminiscences of a Literary Life (1836) are also reissued in this series.

Book The Collected Letters of A W N Pugin 1830 1842

Download or read book The Collected Letters of A W N Pugin 1830 1842 written by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin and published by Collected Letters of A.W.N. Pu. This book was released on 2001 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of A. W. N. Pugin (1812-52) in the history of the Gothic Revival, in the development of ecclesiology, in the origins of the Arts and Crafts movement, and in architectural theory is incontestable. A leading British architect who was also a designer of furniture, silver, textiles, stained glass, and jewellery, he is one of the most significant figures of the mid-nineteenth century and one of the greatest designers. His correspondence is important because it provides more insight into the man and more information about his work than any other source. It cuts a cross-section through early Victorian society: his correspondents range from earls and bishops to painters and tradesmen. The letters illuminate majorpublic events like the Oxford Movement, the (Roman) Catholic revival, and the Great Exhibition of 1851. They are vigorous, direct, often witty and provide an invaluable source for architectural and religio-historical research. Dr Belcher's very thorough research generally transforms what has oftenbeen a blank area, drawing together many sources. By 1842, when this volume ends, Pugin is established in his career. He has written books, designed buildings, found his faith, and made himself known.

Book New Approaches to Medieval Architecture

Download or read book New Approaches to Medieval Architecture written by Robert Bork and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays presents the exciting and innovative work being done in the field of medieval architectural history by scholars affiliated with AVISTA, one of the most active sponsors of such research in the Anglo-American scholarly community. These studies constitute a snapshot of the range of new interpretive strategies being deployed by researchers in the reassessment of previous scholarship and identification of new modes of inquiry. In recent years, the study of medieval architecture has been transformed by the emergence of new critical perspectives and new technologies. The contributors to this book are among those at the forefront of these developments. Several of the essays present dramatic reinterpretations of canonical monuments including the Abbey of Saint-Denis, Beauvais Cathedral and Notre-Dame in Paris. Others consider broader methodological issues such as the applications of geometry, workshop practice, and the shaping of historical narratives. Still others demonstrate how high-tech scanning and visualization methods can enhance our understanding of construction methods and the behavior of buildings. The publication of this collection of pioneering essays should foster further exploration by clarifying the state of research, by establishing specific historical arguments, and by providing models of inquiry to inspire emerging scholars.
