Book excerpt: Wareham, Massachusetts--the Gateway to the Cape--is a small town steeped in rich history. The Wampanoags, or People of the First Light," first used the area of Wareham as a summer home. Later, this area became part of the colonies' first permanent settlement, Plymouth. Since its incorporation in 1739, Wareham has persevered and flourished through the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and the Industrial Revolution. In the nineteenth century, the seaside town quickly became a tourist destination and experienced an early economic boom as salt works, manufacturing mills, ironworks, nail factories and cranberry harvesting developed in the region. With over fifty-four miles of scenic waterfront, Wareham has drawn travelers to its shores for centuries. Join author Michael J. Vieira as he deftly navigates the history of this vibrant community."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wareham Sixty Years Since: A Discourse Delivered at Wareham, Massachusetts, May 19, 1861 Dear Sir: - At the close of divine service yesterday, it was unanimously voted, by the congregation worshiping in connection with the First Church in this place, "that the thanks of the Congregation be presented to the Rev. Dr. BuKGESS, for his instructive and interesting Discourse delivered in the morning, commemorative of Wareham sixty years ago, and that a copy be earnestly requested for publication." Gentlemen: - I am happy to learn that my Discourse, delivered in Ware ham yesterday, commemorative of the Town as it was sixty years since, is acceptable to the people. Its mission is fulfilled. If however, in your judgment, some aged persons may be gratified to read it, and some young persons may better appreciate the example and principles of their worthy ancestors, I shall not feel at liberty to withhold a copy of it from your hands. Book excerpt: Wareham nestles along the coast of picturesque Buzzards Bay in southeastern Massachusetts. First visited by Native Americans who made it their summer home, the villages of Wareham and Onset were incorporated as the town of Wareham in 1739. The town's long and varied history includes the development of the salt, iron, shipping, and cranberry industries and the decades of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries when the town provided an exciting resort destination. Many ethnic groups made Wareham their home, including the Cape Verdeans, who contributed to the development of the cranberry industry and brought the richness of their culture to the community. Wareham spans the years from the eighteenth century to the mid-twentieth century and includes images of important buildings, many of which no longer exist. The book depicts the numerous early villages for their unique flavor: Tremont, Parker Mills, Lincoln Hill, and Swifts Beach in Wareham; Agawam Village; and Onset's many beaches and neighborhoods, such as the downtown village, Point Independence, and Wicket's Island. Wareham includes rare photographs of downtown Wareham, the Horseshoe Mill, and the Tremont Nail Company, as well as Onset's Victorian casinos and hotels that recall bygone days of seaside splendor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: West Rock and East Rock are bold and beautiful features around New Haven, Connecticut. They resemble monumental gateways (or time-tried sentinels) and represent a moment in geologic time when the North American and African continents began to separate and volcanism affected much of Connecticut. The rocks attracted the attention of poets, painters, and naturalists when beliefs rose about the spiritual dimensions of nature in the early 19th century. More than two dozen artists, including Frederick Church, George Durrie, and John Weir, captured their magic and produced an assortment of classic American landscapes. In the same period, the science of geology evolved rapidly, triggered by the controversy between proponents and opponents of biblical explanations for the origin of rocks. Lavishly illustrated, featuring over sixty paintings and prints, this book is a perfect introduction to understanding the relationship of geology and art. It will delight those who appreciate landscape painting, and anyone who has seen the grandeur of East and West Rock.
