Book excerpt: Athens County, Ohio, came out of the pioneer spirit of a new nation expanding westward after the Revolutionary War into the Northwest Territory. Upon declaration of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, the Ohio Company of Associates bought millions of acres of land to sell to land-hungry easterners. In 1788, the first boat of new settlers arrived in Marietta, Ohio. By 1797, wars with the Native Americans had ended and more land became available. When they got here, settlers found some rich farmland, but more importantly they discovered salt, coal, clay and a need for industry to provide for the needs of the people. Opportunities abounded to make fortunes in other places from the resources readily available locally. Central to the development of Athens County was the vision people had years before the first settlers arrived; they dreamed of and made provisions for a university in the new territory. Today, more than 200 years later, Ohio University thrives in the city of Athens.

Book Enchanted Ground

Download or read book Enchanted Ground written by Sharon Hatfield and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Enchanted Ground, Sharon Hatfield brings to life the true story of a nineteenth-century farmer-turned-medium, Jonathan Koons, one of thousands of mediums throughout the antebellum United States. In the hills outside Athens, Ohio, Koons built a house where it was said the dead spoke to the living, and where ancient spirits communicated the wisdom of the ages. Curious believers, in homespun and in city attire, traveled from as far as New Orleans to a remote Appalachian cabin whose marvels would rival any of P. T. Barnum’s attractions. Yet Koons’s story is much more than showmanship and sleight of hand. His enterprise, not written about in full until now, embodied the excitement and optimism of citizens breaking free from societal norms. Reform-minded dreamers were drawn to Koons’s seances as his progressive brand of religion displaced the gloomy Calvinism of previous generations. As heirs to the Second Great Awakening, which stretched from New York State to the far reaches of the Northwest Territory, the curious, the faithful, and Koons himself were part of a larger, uniquely American moment that still marks the cultural landscape today.

Book Awakening Courage

Download or read book Awakening Courage written by Steve Miller and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-11-27 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Awakening Courage: Stories of Grit, Resilience, and Toughness depicts the gifts and talents of people residing in a rural southeastern Ohio community nestled in the Appalachian foothills. But it could very well be any community in America. The author writes insightfully of the real lives of individuals and groups who transformed their communities. He does this with a clever mix of spirit, storytelling, and practical application strategies which he includes at the end of every chapter in the form of Points to Ponder, Questions for Discussion, and Applications to Community Development. You will be introduced to ‘gritty’ people who refused to take no for an answer and learned to rise above challenges and adversity and achieve prosperity in the process. They are people of character, humility, integrity, and passion. They are mentally tough, accountable to a cause bigger than themselves and “walk the talk” daily in their journey toward becoming all that they were meant to be, not what someone else said they should be. As you read this book, you are encouraged to examine your heart, your mind, and your experience about your place in any community - family, neighborhood, school, workplace, church, city or village. You will learn how people can bring their very best efforts to the present moment - which is the only time we have. So get comfy and grab your favorite brew and be prepared to learn more about the core qualities and traits of change-makers who were not born of privilege, genius, or wealth. They were just ordinary people who seized the opportunities given to them and made a difference and impacted their community along the way.
