Download or read book In Hock written by Wendy A. Woloson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive history of pawnbroking in the United States from the nation’s founding through the Great Depression, In Hock demonstrates that the pawnshop was essential to the rise of capitalism. The class of working poor created by this economic tide could make ends meet only, Wendy Woloson argues, by regularly pawning household objects to supplement inadequate wages. Nonetheless, businessmen, reformers, and cultural critics claimed that pawnshops promoted vice, and employed anti-Semitic stereotypes to cast their proprietors as greedy and cold-hearted. Using personal correspondence, business records, and other rich archival sources to uncover the truth behind the rhetoric, Woloson brings to life a diverse cast of characters and shows that pawnbrokers were in fact shrewd businessmen, often from humble origins, who possessed sophisticated knowledge of a wide range of goods in various resale markets. A much-needed new look at a misunderstood institution, In Hock is both a first-rate academic study of a largely ignored facet of the capitalist economy and a resonant portrait of the economic struggles of generations of Americans.

Book A Brief History of Pawnbroking

Download or read book A Brief History of Pawnbroking written by Alfred Hardaker and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of Pawnbroking: With Full Narrative of How the Act of 1872 Was Fought for and Obtained and the Stolen Goods Bill Opposed and Defeated History of Pawnltroking, with the one exception of that written by Mr. W.A. H.Hows, as long ago as 1847. A valuable contribution, so far as ancient money-lending may have been interesting, was made by the late Francis Turner, Esq., Barrister-at-Law, in his introduction to the Contract of Pawn, published anterior to the present Act becoming law. Neither of these authors - although both lived to see its accomplishment - dreamt that the idea had taken possession of men's minds, that the time had come for thorough Pawnbroking Reform being attem3ted, nor that it would be successful. The great struggle made, lasting from 1868 to 1872, and culminating with the passing of the present Act, has therefore never previously been recorded. Neither, again, has the fierce, protracted, bold and successful Defence made against the Stolen Goods Bill, extending as it did from 1881 to 1884, been chronicled by any Historian. As both the events now mentioned were, without dovibt, the most momentous since the PawnbrokingTrade became regulated by statute if not, indeed, throughoiit its whole existence it has been considered desirable by many, that, while the documents are available, and a few of those gentlemen who took leading parts in both attack and defence, still live, some authentic, reliable, and detailed chronicle should, in a brief space, be compiled. • Author : Michael J. Walsh
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press

Download or read book Sacred Economies written by Michael J. Walsh and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buddhist monasteries in medieval China employed a variety of practices to ensure their ascendancy and survival. Most successful was the exchange of material goods for salvation, as in the donation of land, which allowed monks to spread their teachings throughout China. By investigating a variety of socioeconomic spaces produced and perpetuated by Chinese monasteries, Michael J. Walsh reveals the "sacred economies" that shaped early Buddhism and its relationship with consumption and salvation. Centering his study on Tiantong, a Buddhist monastery that has thrived for close to seventeen centuries in southeast China, Walsh follows three main topics: the spaces monks produced, within and around which a community could pursue a meaningful existence; the social and economic avenues through which monasteries provided diverse sacred resources and secured the primacy of Buddhist teachings within an agrarian culture; and the nature of "transactive" participation within monastic spaces, which later became a fundamental component of a broader Chinese religiosity. Unpacking these sacred economies and repositioning them within the history of religion in China, Walsh encourages a different approach to the study of Chinese religion, emphasizing the critical link between religious exchange and the production of material culture.
