By 1664 they had small settlements at Paulus Hook and Bergen (both within the present limits of Jersey City), and also at Hoboken, Pavonia, and Weehawken. A few settlers had built themselves homes on Newark Bay, but the actual settlement had progressed so slowly that when the Dutch were forced to give up New Netherlands, few traces of their occupation remained. Book Geography and History of New Jersey Classic Reprint

Download or read book Geography and History of New Jersey Classic Reprint written by Albert B. Meredith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geography and History of New Jersey The geography and history of any state are closely interwoven; New Jersey is no exception. Its coast position between two great cities, the long sandy stretches in the east, and the foothills toward the west and north have all combined to make of the history of this state not only an interesting story which every New Jersey school child should know but also one in which he should take great pride. It is the geographic conditions with which a people have to contend that determine to a great extent what that people shall accomplish. The authors of the present book have endeavored to show clearly and definitely the character of the land which we call New Jersey: how it has fostered farming, fishing, and manufacturing; how it has steadily made for progress; and how it has brought wealth to the inhabitants. New Jersey has been greatly favored and her people have accomplished much. The history of New Jersey began almost with the history of our country, and from the time when the first settlers reached her coast and laid out their small farms and towns there have been no movements in our national history in which the men and women of New Jersey have not done their part. It is presupposed that the children who study this book will be acquiring from other texts a general knowledge of United States history, and so only those events and incidents which are peculiarly a part of the history of the state of New Jersey have been included in this narrative. A brief outline of the civics of New Jersey is included which will furnish a framework of government in this state. From such a beginning the child may develop a wider and more thorough knowledge of local governmental problems. Be errors in a work of this kind, and the author is gravely apprehensive that very many are to be met within the History. At the same time, it is proper to say that'the greatest pains possible have been taken to avoid these imperfections, and secure accuracy of dates and facts; but still, as has already been suggested, errors are sure to have crept ih - are sure to have stolen past every barrier that care and watchfulness could interpose. Assured at least of the prepossessing form in which the History is presented, it is allowable, perhaps, to paraphrase Pope and say. Download or read book History of the County of Hudson New Jersey written by Charles H. Winfield and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the County of Hudson, New Jersey: From Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time In the summer of 1869, white the author was investigating the title to the land now owned by the National Storage Company, near Communipaw, he had occasion to examine some old records. These awakened an interest in the past of this vicinity, which has increased with the subsequent years of research and toil. The following pages are the result. Whatever may be its imperfections, the candid reader may safely credit the author with considerable "work and labor done and performed," as the lawyers say, and an honest endeavor truthfully and impartially to reproduce the past and perpetuate the present, for the pleasure or profit of the future. Not a statement has been made without authority for its justification; not a fact which could throw light upon or add interest to whatever has happened within the County has been omitted, so far as the same came to his knowledge. The records at Albany, Trenton, Hackensack, Amboy and New York, besides many books, papers and private manuscripts, have been consulted. These have been depended on in preference to memories approaching the "forgetfulness of all things." The County was no inconsiderable part of New Netherland, and its history is contemporary and its government one with New Amsterdam. This suggested the starting point for investigation. It has been carried from that point until the present time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Jersey: A History of the Garden State presents a fresh, comprehensive overview of New Jersey’s history from the prehistoric era to the present. The findings of archaeologists, political, social, and economic historians provide a new look at how the Garden State has evolved. The state has a rich Native American heritage and complex colonial history. It played a pivotal role in the American Revolution, early industrialization, and technological developments in transportation, including turnpikes, canals, and railroads. The nineteenth century saw major debates over slavery. While no Civil War battles were fought in New Jersey, most residents supported it while questioning the policies of the federal government. Next, the contributors turn to industry, urbanization, and the growth of shore communities. A destination for immigrants, New Jersey continued to be one of the most diverse states in the nation. Many of these changes created a host of social problems that reformers tried to minimize during the Progressive Era. Settlement houses were established, educational institutions grew, and utopian communities were founded. Most notably, women gained the right to vote in 1920. In the decades leading up to World War II, New Jersey benefited from back-to-work projects, but the rise of the local Ku Klux Klan and the German American Bund were sad episodes during this period. The story then moves to the rise of suburbs, the concomitant decline of the state’s cities, growing population density, and changing patterns of wealth. Deep-seated racial inequities led to urban unrest as well as political change, including such landmark legislation as the Mount Laurel decision. Today, immigration continues to shape the state, as does the tension between the needs of the suburbs, cities, and modest amounts of remaining farmland. Well-known personalities, such as Jonathan Edwards, George Washington, Woodrow Wilson, Dorothea Dix, Thomas Edison, Frank Hague, and Albert Einstein appear in the narrative. Contributors also mine new and existing sources to incorporate fully scholarship on women, minorities, and immigrants. All chapters are set in the context of the history of the United States as a whole, illustrating how New Jersey is often a bellwether for the nation..

Download or read book History of Monmouth County New Jersey written by Franklin Ellis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-17 with total page 1138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Monmouth County, New Jersey: Illustrated To the general matter pertaining to the county, is added a history of each of its townships, embracing accounts of churches, schools, societies, and other local organizations, and also special matters intended chiefly for reference. Other portions of the work are necessarily arranged according to the subjects of which they treat. A prominent feature of the work is the mention of early settlers, and of the families descended from them. In this connection it is proper to remark that the family names of many of the pioneers and later residents of Monmouth county have been found spelled differently, (and sometimes in as many as three or four different ways), in the county, township and church records; and for that reason it has often been found impossible to decide with any degree of certainty, on the correct orthography, - if, indeed, there is any choice' as to correctness, where, as is not infrequently the case in this county, different members of the same family, spell their surname variously, each in his own way. Under such circumstances, it should not be thought strange if the writer, being wholly at a. Loss to know which manner of spelling to adopt, has sometimes chosen one which may be regarded as incorrect by some who bear the name. Beyond this explanation, no apology will be made, for none is thought to be necessary. It is of course impossible to produce a history which shall be absolutely perfect and complete, but every effort has been used to make this as nearly so as possible, and it is now presented, with full confidence that the verdict of its patrons will be one of approval.
