Download or read book Beyond Calvin written by Graeme Murdock and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An international community of Reformed churches emerged during the sixteenth century. Although attempts were made by Calvinists to reach agreement over key beliefs, and to establish uniformity in patterns of worship and church government, there were continuing divisions over some ideas and differences between local practices of moral discipline and religious life. However, Reformed intellectuals developed common ideas about rights of resistance against tyrants, communities prayed, fasted and donated money to aid brethren in distress, and many Calvinists across the Continent developed a strong sense of collective identity. Beyond Calvin considers the Reformed churches of Europe in an international and comparative context from around 1540 to 1620. Graeme Murdock: - Discusses how Calvinism operated as an international movement by looking at links between Reformed churches, communities and states - Explains what Reformed churches across the Continent stood for - Focuses on how Calvinists sought to purify the practice of Christian religion, and to renew European politics, society and culture - Examines both the strengths and limits of the international Reformed community

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Discourse of the Troubles Begun at Frankfort in the Year 1554: About the Book of Common Prayer and Ceremonies In the Preface to the following "Brief Discourse," and in a subsequent page of the same work, its author has, in a few words, given us the reasons which induced him at that time to publish the same to the world. Though a great part of it might have been arranged a short period before the date which it bears in the title-page, the materials must have existed in a tolerably complete form, and certainly bear marks of having been written at the period to which it refers. Evidently an actor in the troubles which he describes, the author does not speak doubtingly; there is no appeal to memory; for, though he could not be a personal witness of what was simultaneously occurring at Frankfort, Geneva, and elsewhere, those who furnished him with information were such as he could rely on, and were deputed probably by him to register events as they occurred: this portion also bears the same internal marks of truth. This narrative, remarkable for its character, deeply interesting from its subject, possesses claims to our notice that cannot be disputed.
