Book Bridge Between Worlds

Download or read book Bridge Between Worlds written by Dan Millman and published by H J Kramer. This book was released on 2009-11-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A decade before Dan Millman wrote his spiritual classic Way of the Peaceful Warrior, a motorcycle crash ended his Olympic dreams. Some years later, two thugs, one armed with a metal pipe, closed in to attack a young writer named Doug Childers. These two young men had no notion that they would one day meet, become friends, and draw upon their experiences to create a collection of inspiring stories about people whose lives were changed by extraordinary events. Each story in this newly revised volume (formerly titled Divine Interventions) describes a unique journey across a metaphorical bridge to a higher reality. These stirring accounts of the lives of ordinary people as well as iconic figures, past and present, will awaken in readers a renewed faith in the mysterious possibilities hidden in daily life.

Book excerpt: A Bridge Between is the first account of the Benedictine women who worked at New Norcia and the first book-length exploration of twentieth-century life in the Western Australian mission town. From the founding of a grand school intended for ‘nativas’, through links to Mexico and Paraguay then Ireland, India and Belgium, as well as to their house in the Kimberley, and a network of villages near Burgos in the north of Spain, this is a complex international history. A Bridge Between gathers a powerful, fragmented story from the margins of the archive, recalling the Aboriginal women who joined the community in the 1950s and the compelling reunion of missionaries and former students in 2001. By tracing the all-but-forgotten story of the community of Benedictine women who were central to the experience of the mission for many Aboriginal families in the twentieth century, this book lays a foundation for further work. This sensitive account of Spanish Benedictine women at an Aboriginal mission in Western Australia is poignant and disturbing. Notable for its ecumenical spirit, depth of research and deep engagement with the subject, A Bridge Between is a model of how religious history, in its broader bearings, can be written. — Graeme Davison, Monash University With great insight and care, A Bridge Between presents a sympathetic but not uncritical history of the lives of individuals who have often been invisible. The story of the nuns at New Norcia is a timely contribution to Australia’s religious history. Given the findings of the Royal Commission, it will be widely read both within and beyond the academy. History is, here, a spiritual discipline, and an exercise in hope and reconciliation. — Laura Rademaker, The Australian National University

Allen delivers her most breathtakingly poignant work in this thrilling romantic suspense about two star-crossed lovers and an ominous force that works against them. I had always known he wasn't mine to keep, but that didn't change the way I loved him-quietly, gently, and from afar. As the seasons changed, the corn stalks grew strong, and the grapevines flourished with hope. But none of it mattered, not when the soil at our feet bound us in a century-old rivalry. We'd never even had a chance. They said life flashed before your eyes on the way to death, but on that night, after my final scream burst from my throat and my world started to fade to black, I only thought of him. Of his sweet chocolate eyes, his desperately cautious stare, and his silence that carried more weight than gold. I should have died that night. Instead, I crossed the moonlit bridge and never returned. I let rivalry win. If only that had been enough to keep us all safe. If only we didn't have a bridge between us.

Book The Bridge Between the East and West A Journey to Truth through His Love

This book was released on 2009-02-28 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inspiring autobiography about Samia Zumout’s own life journey towards God and His immense Healing Love. Samia courageously and intimately shares her heart’s journey as she recounts her life story, hurts, inner heart’s wounds, failures, struggles, moments of despair and the lies that she believed about herself that prevented her from experiencing God's love for her in fullness. She shares how the Lord Jesus freed her from these lies and healed her heart’s wounds through His infinite Love. Amid her quest for God, she finds someone she never expected to find: herself. Our Lord demonstrated to Samia that everything in her life - good and bad – has its purpose. Samia's story will challenge you to look deeply into your own heart and inspire you to find answers to your own life's hurts and challenges through reading about hers and the victory that our Lord gives us as He heals our wounds and draws us into His love for us! In June 2006, Samia felt a strong desire in her heart to write this autobiographical book, The Bridge between the East and West: A Journey to Truth through His Love. While in deep prayer, the Lord Jesus confirmed to Samia that writing this book was an important part of her life’s mission as it would bring people closer to His heart as many would experience His healing love while reading about her life’s journey. The Lord Jesus instructed Samia that it would only take her 30 days to write the book if she lived a sacramental life centered on the Eucharist, deep prayer and fasting throughout that period. Samia began writing the book on July 17, 2007 and the book was completed on August 15, 2007, exactly 30 days later.

Book excerpt: “A treasure...a wise and entertaining book that should appeal to the spiritual pilgrim in all of us, no matter what the faith and no matter whether believer or nonbeliever.” – Chicago Tribune The New York Times bestselling author of The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything and Jesus: A Pilgrimage turns his attention to the relationship between LGBT Catholics and the Church in this loving, inclusive, and revolutionary book. A powerful call for tolerance, acceptance, and support—and a reminder of Jesus' message for us to love one another. In this moving and inspiring book, Martin offers a powerful, loving, and much-needed voice in a time marked by anger, prejudice, and divisiveness. On the day after the Orlando nightclub shooting, James Martin S.J. posted a video on Facebook in which he called for solidarity with our LGBT brothers and sisters. "The largest mass shooting in US history took place at a gay club and the LGBT community has been profoundly affected," he began. He then implored his fellow Catholics—and people everywhere—to "stand not only with the people of Orlando but also with their LGBT brothers and sisters." Father Martin's post went viral and was viewed more than 1.6 million times. Adapted from an address he gave to New Ways Ministry, a group that ministers to and advocates for LGBT Catholics, Building a Bridge provides a roadmap for repairing and strengthening the bonds that unite all of us as God's children. Martin uses the image of a two-way bridge to enable LGBT Catholics and the Church to come together in a call to end the "us" versus "them" mentality. Turning to the Catechism, he draws on the three criteria at the heart of the Christian ministry—"respect, compassion, and sensitivity"—as a model for how the Catholic Church should relate to the LGBT community. Book Networks of Meaning

Download or read book Networks of Meaning written by Christine Hardy and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1998-10-28 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The generation of meaning is the most fundamental process of the mind. It underlies all major mental functions, such as intelligence, memory, perception, and communication. Not surprisingly, it has been one of the most difficult processes to understand and represent in a model of human cognition. Dr. Christine Hardy introduces two fundamental concepts to address the complexity and richness of meaning. First, she discusses Semantic Constellations, which constitute the basic transversal network organization of mental and neural processes. Second, she addresses a highly dynamic connective process that underlies conscious thought and constantly gives birth to novel emergents or meanings. Taken together, Hardy asserts, the mind's network architecture and connective dynamics allow for self-organization, generativity, and creativity. They can also account for some of the most interesting facets of mental processes, in particular, nonlinear shifts and breakthroughs such as intuition, insights, and shifts in states of consciousness. This connective dynamic does not just take place within the mind. Rather, it involves a continuously evolving person-environment interaction: meaning is injected into the environment, and then retrojected, somewhat modified, back into the psyche. This means that, simultaneously, we are both perceiving reality and subtly influencing the very reality we perceive: objects, events, and other individuals. The way in which we think and feel, both individually and collectively, interacts with the physical world and directly shapes the society in which we live. The very same connective dynamic, Hardy shows, is the foundation for those rare yet striking transpersonal experiences known as synchronicity and psychic phenomena. We live in a world in which we interact with reality at a very fundamental level. Hardy's work is a major analysis for scholars and researchers in the cognitive sciences, psychology, and parapsychology.

Book excerpt: A few years ago, an email from AT&T misspelled Indah Gunawan's name as "India Guinea Pig." Every time she told people she was an international student from Indonesia, the most common follow-up question was about why her "English is so good" and how she "doesn't even have an accent." Growing up at international schools gave Indah a skewed sense of identity. Her sense of belonging always rested in her relationships with other third-culture kids who understood how she felt. She never qualified as just Chinese, or as just Indonesian. When Indah moved to Los Angeles she was "too Asian" for America, but when she'd come back to Jakarta she was "too White" for Asia. Transient takes a hilarious and heartfelt look at what it means to be an international student, and the obstacles that come with it. Read insights and stories from fellow international students like actor and comedian Ronny Chieng, US Senator Tammy Duckworth, and over a hundred others from around the globe. Gain deeper insight and experience through Indah's authentic and honest journey on what it means to be an international student experiencing the Anglosphere for the first time. If you don't mind a little brutal honesty, some swearing, crass humor, and a sassy attitude, Transient might just be the book you're looking for!

  • Pages : 162 pages

Download or read book The Bridge written by Geert Mak and published by Random House. This book was released on 2009 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Istanbul s Galata Bridge has spanned the Golden Horn since the sixth century AD, connecting the old city with the more Western districts to the north. But the bridge is a city in itself, peopled by merchants and petty thieves, tourists and fishermen, and at the same time a microcosmic reflection of Turkey as the link between Asia and Europe. Geert Mak introduces us to the woman who sells lottery tickets, the cigarette vendors, and the best pickpockets in Europe. He tells us about the pride of the cobbler and the tea-seller's homesickness. And he describes the role of honor in Turkish culture, the temptations of fundamentalism and violence, and the urge to survive, even in the face of despair. These stories of the bridge s denizens are interwoven with vignettes illuminating moments in the history of Istanbul and Turkey and shedding light on Turkey s relationship with Europe and the West, the Armenian question, the migration from the Turkish countryside to the city, and the demise of the Ottoman Empire."
