Book excerpt: A two-dimensional Boundary Element Method (BEM) is developed to study the strongly nonlinear interaction between a surface-piercing body and the free-surface. The scheme is applied to problems with and without the possibility of ventilation resulting from the motion and geometric configuration of the surface-piercing body. The main emphasis of this research work is on the development of numerical methods to improve the performance prediction of surface-piercing propellers by including the whole range of free-surface nonlinearities. The scheme is applied to predict the ventilated cavity shapes resulting from the vertical and rotational motion of a blade-section with fully nonlinear free-surface boundary conditions. The current method is able to predict the ventilated cavity shapes for a wide range of angles of attack and Froude numbers, and is in good agreement with existing experimental results. Through a comparison with a linearized free-surface method, the current method highlights the shortcomings of the negative image approach used commonly in two-dimensional and three-dimensional numerical methods for surface-piercing hydrofoils or propellers. The current method with all its capabilities makes it a unique contribution to improving numerical tools for the performance prediction of surface-piercing propellers. The scheme is also applied to predict the roll and heave dynamics of two-dimensional Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel hull sections within a potential flow framework. The development of the potential flow model is aimed at validating the free-surface dynamics of an independently developed Navier Stokes Solver for predicting the roll characteristics of two-dimensional hull sections with bilge keels.

Most of the new work has concentrated on the solution of non-linear and time dependent problems and the development of numerical techniques to increase the efficiency of the method. Chapter 1 of this Volume deals with the solution of non-linear potential problems, for which the diffusivity coefficient is a function of the potential and the boundary conditions are also non-linear. The recent research reported here opens the way for the solution of a: large range of non-homogeneous problems by using a simple transformation which linearizes the governing equations and consequently does not require the use of internal cells. Chapter 2 summarizes the main integral equations for the solution of two-and three dimensional scalar wave propagation problems. This is a type of problem that is well suited to boundary elements but generally gives poor results when solved using finite elements. The problem of fracture mechanics is studied in Chapter 3, where the ad vantages of using boundary integral equations are demonstrated. One of the most interesting features of BEM i~ the possibility of describing the problem only as a function of the boundary unknowns, even in the presence of body, centrifugal and temperature induced forces. Chapter 4 explains how this can be done for two-and three-dimensional elastostatic problems.

In dealing with the development of the mathematics of the Boundary Element Method the aim has been at every stage, only to present new material when sufficient experience and practice of simpler material has been gained. Since the usual background of many readers will be of differential equations, the connection of differential equations with integral equations is explained in Chapter 1, together with analytical and numerical methods of solution. This information on integral equations provides a base for the work of subsequent chapters. The mathematical formulation of boundary integral equations for potential problems - derived from the more familiar Laplace partial differential equation which governs many important physical problems - is set out in Chapter 2. It should be noted here that this initial formulation of the boundary integral equations reduces the dimensionality of the problem. In the key Chapter 3, the essentials of the Boundary Element Method are presented. This first presentation of the Boundary Element Method is in its simplest and most approachable form - two dimensional, with the shape of the boundary approximated by straight lines and the functions approximated by constants over each of the straight lines.
