Book Rambles About the Riviera Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rambles About the Riviera Classic Reprint written by Frances Marion Gostling and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles About the Riviera The book has no sequence. It consists of mere detached fragments; glimpses, caught in passing, of old walled towns and feudal fortresses, of gorges, and rivers, and ancient churches, of happy peasants, and forgotten saints, in fact of anything which struck my fancy, and which I thought might strike that of my readers. There are many places I should have liked to have spoken about, well-known places, which would have been interesting to visit, but it is impossible to do more, in one short volume, than take a hasty glance at this wonderful southern land. So, with this word of introduction, I shall open the pages of the old notebook I always keep in my pocket, and try to give you some idea of the weeks we spent the last two autumns rambling about the Riviera. Book Rambles on the Riviera Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rambles on the Riviera Classic Reprint written by Eduard Strasburger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles on the Riviera It is not the purpose of this second preface to make known the frame of mind in which I wrote, but rather to explain the alteration and expansion of the present volume. The reader will be immediately struck by the numerous botanical illustrations which have been introduced into the text. These, it is hoped, will be found a great assistance to the com prehension of the plants which are described. Many of those interested in these Rambles on the Riviera had expressed a wish that the volume should be thus illustrated. It is a matter of congratulation to me that Miss Louise Reusch has devoted herself to this task. She has travelled on the Riviera, and there, on the spot, she has painted from Nature the pictures for this book. The beauty of these paintings proves her to be an accomplished artist; they are not only artistic, but are absolutely true to Nature. To her brush are also due the appropriate vignettes which mark the main divisions of the book. It reflects much credit on the publisher that he was willing to go to such great expense for an undertaking with which he sym pathised; he has indeed placed me under a great obligation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Riviera: Pen and Pencil Sketches From Cannes to Genoa HE rapid course of events since the following pages were written has put some remarks in them out of date. Who would have imagined, as late as Midsummer of this year, that the route to Marseilles and Nice, through Paris, would before Michaelmas have become a thing of the past? Who could have expected that the misrule of ages on the banks of the Tiber would have come to an end, with its Imperial upholder, -melted away as with a breath, unregretted and almost unenquired for? But Nature remains unchanged, and it is mainly Nature with which I am concerned. The fair coast which is the subject of these sketches is as yet untouched by war; but it likewise has its aspirations, for which it would even pay the price of conflict. Only by an Imperial juggle have Nice and Mentone become vassals of France. The whole face of the land, the whole breath of the climate, the whole spirit of the people, are Italian; and by any French government which sets about redressing the wrongs of the Empire, to Italy they must be restored. Book The Naples Riviera Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Naples Riviera Classic Reprint written by Herbert M. Vaughan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Naples Riviera Museum, this observing the daily life of the populace, and bargain-hunting in the Strada de' Tribunali, are agreeable enough for a while, but of necessity there comes a time when the mind grows weary of yelling people and of jostling crowds, of stuffy churches and of the chilly halls of the Museum, of steep dirty streets and of glaring boulevards, so that we begin to sigh for fresh air and a change of scene. Nor is there any means of escape within the precincts of the city itself from the eternal cracking of whips, from the insulting compliments (or complimentary insults) of the incorrigible cabmen, from the continuous babel Of unmusical voices, and from the reiterated strains of Santa Lucia or. Margari howled from raucous throats or strummed from rickety street-organs. Oh for peace, and rest, and a whiff of pure country air! For there are no walks in or around the City of the Siren, where there is nowhere to stroll save the narrow strip of the much-vaunted Villa (which is either damp or dusty according to weather) or the fatiguing ascent amidst walled gardens and newly built houses to the heights of the Vomero, which are covered with a raw suburb. Moreover our pristine delight in the place is beginning to flag, as we gradually realise that the city, like the majority of great modern towns, is being practically rebuilt to the annihilation of its Old-world features, which used to give to Naples its peculiar charm and its marked individuality amongst large sea-ports. Long ago has disappeared Santa Brigida, that picturesque high coloured slum, on whose site stands the garish domed gallery of which the Neapolitans are so proud; gone in these latter days is classic Santa Lucia with its. • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book Athens Riviera written by Assouline and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-28 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overlooking the Aegean Sea, a charming string of coastal neighborhoods form the Athens Riviera, a serene escape from the constant activity in the city's center. A selection of high-end hotels lines the pristine stretch of beaches down to the southernmost point of the Attica Peninsula. The revamped Four Seasons Astir Palace, with a history of housing foreign dignitaries and film stars of the 1960s, is the most luxurious hotel in Athens, perhaps even in all of Greece. The night club, Island, is bringing back the glamour and excitement of the twentieth century bouzouki clubs reminiscent of names such as Melina Mercouri and Stavros Niarchos. Athens is experiencing a revival--in art, night life and design. For a metropolis constantly associated with the past, the modern strides in development and culture are sometimes overlooked in favor of the ruins and artifacts from antiquity. When in fact, the juxtaposition only enhances the beauty of both. Athens Riviera puts the old-world beside the new-world and a deeper understanding of this ancient capital emerges. With one foot in the past and one foot in the future; access to both the electricity of city life and the tranquility of a beach side resort, Athens cannot be defined in simple terms. One just has to experience it for themselves.

This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flowers of the French Riviera My endeavour will be to give a faithful account of what is being done in the present year as it must be borne in mind that the production of, and the trade in, cut flowers are undergoing frequent and material changes from one season to the next. The mere difference in latitude cannot account sufficiently for so large a discrepancy as exists between the coast of Kent or Sussex and that of Provence. The climatic conditions peculiar to the Riviera must be traced in a -1arge proportion to the effect of the sheltering hills and mountains which keep off the north winds, turn away the currents of cold air, and radiate the heat they receive from the sun on warm clear days. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Butterflies of the Riviera The present brief description of the butterflies of this district, was undertaken to supply a long-felt want amongst practical entomologists. No work of the kind has been attempted since the publication, nearly thirty years ago, of Milliere snow scarce Catalogue raisonne des Lepidopteres da departement des Alpes-Maritimes. This latter, though invaluable as far as it goes, is by no means comprehensive, and is often not reliable. Further; the taxonomy and nomenclature are obsolete. In some instances, species cited as belonging to the fauna of the department are found, on closer investigation to be erroneously considered so. This is, no doubt, due to the fact of that eminent lepidopterist having often accepted information on these points without having substantiated it. As regards classification and naming. I have thought it best, in the present work, to follow that adopted by Dr O. Staudinger of Dresden, in his well-known Catalogue, as being the most complete and that generally used by European entomologists.
