Book A Book of South Wales Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of South Wales Classic Reprint written by Sabine Baring-Gould and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-12 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of South Wales His book is a companion to my Book qf North Wales. The purpose is the same - to give the visitor some idea of the history of the country in which he travels. To a Welshman there is, of course, in it nothing that he does not know already. But the average Englishman is singularly ignorant of the history of Wales and of the significance of its antiquities. I must tender my thanks to the Rev. J. Fisher, b.d., of Cei'n Rectory, S. Asaph, for kindly revising my proofs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book History of the Princes of South Wales Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Princes of South Wales Classic Reprint written by George Thomas Orlando Bridgeman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Princes of South Wales The history of the subjugation of Wales has received such a very partial consideration from those who have written upon it as a detached page of British history, that it seems desirable to investigate it more closely, and to compare it with such original documents as we still possess. The chief difficulty which meets the student of Welsh medieval history is the scarcity of official deeds. The writings of the early chroniclers, though singularly faithful on the whole, cannot always be implicitly trusted, and it is not often that the facts they record can be authenticated by contemporaneous documents. Heraldic Pedigrees afford but little help; indeed they often serve rather to mislead than assist the enquirer; for though many of them have been preserved by their owners with praiseworthy care for several hundred years, they have been drawn up from the first with palpable inaccuracies and without any regard for dates. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Smut's Message to South Wales General Smuts, who was received with loud and prolonged cheering, said: Mr. Nicholas, ladies and gentlemen, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the reception which you have given me here to-night. I was invited to attend and address a meeting at Tonypandy, and instead of having a meeting, this has turned out from Cardiff to here one of the greatest demonstrations I have ever seen in my life. (Applause.) Ladies and gentlemen, I thank you for what I have seen, and, I may add reverently, I thank God for what I have seen, because I have seen that the heart of Wales beats true. (Applause.) After three years of the agonising loss and suffering caused by this war, the hearts of this little Nation beat true. The hammer strokes of fate have not made you falter, but they have proved your metal. (Cheers.) Just eighteen years ago, I left Pretoria to go into another war. That war lasted for three years. For three years I was, figuratively speaking, up to my neck in it. The position I took up, and still take up, is that that war was a war for freedom. It was a war of a small Nation against the biggest Nation in the World. We fought to the bitter end (Cheers), until all our men, women and children were either in the field or in concentration camps at home or overseas, and then we gave in. We lost our liberty, but we soon got our liberty back again. (Cheers.) By Gods Providence what seemed to be lost to us was restored to us in a very short number of years, and, when that great result had been achieved, I never thought I would spend another three years in waging the same struggle over again. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of a Voyage to New South Wales A return of all occurrences during the night was to be made to the judge-advocate; and the military were required to fur nish. The watch with any assistance they might be in need of, be yond what the civil power could give them, They were provided each with a short staff, to distinguish them during the night, and to denote their office in the colony; and were instructed not to receive any stipulated encouragement or reward from any individual for the conviction of offenders, but to expect that negligence or misconduct in the execution of their trust would be punished with the utmost rigour. These watchmen, it seems, were of necessity chosen from among ethe' convicts; and as it was hoped some of them would feel a pride in being distinguished from their fellows, which might give birth to 9a returning principle of honesty, notwithstanding the jeers and scorn of some of their abandoned associates; Mr. Barrington's con duct justified this reasonable presumption. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways and Byways in South Wales A few prefatory remarks to this book appear to me to be almost imperative if only to explain some apparent sins of omission, or, to come at once to the point and the singular number, the omission of Glamorgan. The title of the volume, it is true, involves it in no particular geographical obligations; but I should not like to incur even a suspicion of making light of the abounding attractions, natural and historical, of this great county, or of being ignorant of them. The plain fact, 'however, is that the large area of South Wales, when measured by the exigencies of my space, rendered the omission of a portion of, it absolutely inevitable. Monmouthshire, having been 'for so long technically, if illogically, outside Wales, lent itself to excision at once with out the necessity for comment, and relieved me of part of the difficulty. Book Literature in New South Wales Classic Reprint

Download or read book Literature in New South Wales Classic Reprint written by G. B. Barton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literature in New South Wales In the first place, it has not proved an easy matter to procure the necessary material. No collection, in the interest of the public, has yet been made of the widely scattered mass of books and papers which constitute our literature. Every one knows how rapidly these things are apt to disappear. Newspapers and magazines are thrown aside as soon as they are read. Books too often share the same fate. Thus it happens that, in the course of a few years, it becomes almost a hopeless task to recover these neglected treasures. However absurd it may seem to say so, it is nevertheless true that there is already a field for literary antiquarianism among us, and more than one antiquarian is vigorously at work. The collection made by the late Mr. Justice Wise, imperfect as it is, amply demonstrates this truth. Without the assistance of that collection, the facts gathered together in this work could never have been obtained. Much of our periodical literature has vanished. Portions of it may be found in dusty corners of public libraries, and other portions in the hands of private collectors. Were they thrown together, we should possess ample means for estimating our progress in letters, as well as a valuable source of information on our past history. It is to be hoped that this will be accomplished before it becomes too late to attempt it. Such a collection has already been made in Victoria, where the importance of local publications, as materials for History, is fully felt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First in the Field: A Story of New South Wales "I say, don't, Green: let the poor things alone!" "You mind your own business. Oh! bother the old thorns!" Brian Green snatched his hand out of the quickset hedge into which he had thrust it, to reach the rough outside of a nest built by a bird, evidently in the belief that the hawthorn leaves would hide it from sight, and while they were growing the thorns would protect it from mischievous hands. But the leaves opened out slowly that cold spring, and a party of boys from Dr. Dunham's school, the Friary, Broadhurst, Kent, was not long in spying out the unlucky parents' attempt at house-building and nursery. Still, the thorns did their duty to some extent when Brian Green of the red head leaped across the big dry ditch, rudely crushing a great clump of primroses and forcing them down the slope, for when the freckled-faced lad thrust his hand in to grasp the nest a sharp prick made him withdraw it, while this action brought it in contact with a natural chevaux de frise, scarified the back, and made a long scratch on his thumb.
