Book excerpt: "Although Thomas gives original readings of famous English texts by Chaucer and Shakespeare, this is also a book about Czech writers and travelers; one Czech expatriate, Anne of Bohemia, became Queen of England. For both countries these were decades of religious and dynastic turbulence, and Thomas's analyses of the relations between Wyclif and Hus, Lollards and Hussites, help us to understand why Bohemia was viewed as an almost utopian land of refuge ("a blessed shore" on which a ship might wash up) for persecuted English men and women. Of particular interest is his analysis of the ways in which English court culture emulated that of Prague, which was an imperial seat at a time when England was still a peripheral place with little influence on the heart of Europe.

Book Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit

Download or read book Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit written by Evangelist John Henry Manigo and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-10-21 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One book or three books: My main interest is to help the deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing people understand the Word of God and to apply it to their own life with Gods help. It also gives us, as well as the hearing people, encouragement, help, and inspiration from the Word of God and tells us to receive the Word of God by faith. My main reason of writing the Trinity to show the example of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit as one and believe that God is One. I also write Trinity for various reasons and put down Bible verses to help match the Old Testament and New Testament that speak the same thing to show them the Bible in fact is real. Gods Word is very real. I write the main points because I have heard in the past about their belief, their teaching, and their faith in God, and I am willing to write down what they say and that the Bible has all the answer to our need and purpose. I have studied the Bible for forty-five years, seeking answers and being able to explain better from Gods teaching, from Gods Word. Whenever I hear people talk about their faith in God, I write down Bible verses to help inspire their life positive. It would help all of us to grow in grace through our Lord Jesus Christ. He has the answer to all our problems. My main point is to help them know that they can be saved through Jesus Christ by faith in him alone. Only in him shall we be saved. Be blessed! Evangelist John H. Manigo 1 Corinthians 6:1920

Book Shakespeare and the Environment A Dictionary

Download or read book Shakespeare and the Environment A Dictionary written by Sophie Chiari and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While our physical surroundings fashion our identities, we, in turn, fashion the natural elements in which or with which we live. This complex interaction between the human and the non-human already resonated in Shakespeare's plays and poems. As details of the early modern supra- and infra-celestial landscape feature in his works, this dictionary brings to the fore Shakespeare's responsiveness to and acute perception of his 'environment' and it covers the most significant uses of words related to this concept. In doing so, it also examines the epistemological changes that were taking place at the turn of the 17th century in a society which increasingly tried to master nature and its elements. For this reason, the intersections between the natural and the supernatural receive special emphasis. All in all, this dictionary offers a wide variety of resources that takes stock of the 'green criticism' that recently emerged in Shakespeare studies and provides a clear and complete overview of the idea, imagery and language of environment in the canon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How much is too much to ask of friendship? How long will the bonds of family endure when confronted with swift, unexpected change? These are the intimate questions Jean Reynolds Page poses in A Blessed Event, her assured and powerful literary debut. Joanne Timbro and Darla Stevens have grown up in a small Texas town, their childhood homes separated only by adjoining back yards. Although the families inside these houses have little in common, the two girls find in each other a rare friendship that will take them into their adult lives; a friendship that makes them stronger together than either could be alone. Then as young women, Darla and Jo enter into an agreement that will startle everyone who cares for them. After years of watching Darla’s heartbreaking failure to have a baby with her husband, Cal, Joanne agrees to give birth to the child that Darla cannot have on her own. But in the early morning hours of a warm July morning, everything changes. Joanne, then four months pregnant, is driving a car that veers off the road near the home that Darla shares with Cal. In the days and months that follow, Darla must face for the first time in her memory, the possibility of life without Jo. As Darla tries to uncover the secrets that brought her friend out onto the highway in those dark morning hours, she discovers that she must also fight to keep the baby that was intended to be her child. With the child’s fate hanging in the balance, Darla searches for clues to Jo’s strange behavior leading up to the crash. In the process, she discovers truths that hide in her own life: in her marriage, in her closest friendships, and in a past that has suddenly reemerged, full of unfolding secrets. Tender and heartbreaking, hopeful and honest, A Blessed Event brings life’s everyday experiences into bright focus, contrasting beautifully the pain of suffering with the sublime joys of surviving—and truly living.
