  • Author : Eva Lindström
  • Publisher : Lerner Publishing Group
  • Release : 2023-09-05
  • ISBN : 1776575512
  • Pages : 36 pages

Download or read book A Bird Day written by Eva Lindström and published by Lerner Publishing Group. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A funny and whimsical picture book about an ordinary family day, told through a bird family, from 2022 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award recipient Eva Lindström. "Wash your beaks, it's time for lunch—flies again today," says Dad. After lunch the young birds get sent off to play—they sing, hunt mosquitos, compare leg size, and poke grubs. This is how birds spend a day. Eva Lindström reflects the familiar and the absurd in human behavior through this funny bird family. We all recognize the family dynamics of bickering over fried mosquitos and worm pie—only the youngest is allowed to pick out the worms. Toddlers will recognize key moments in a perfectly down to earth day—play, mealtimes, stretching boundaries, and sleep. With dry observations of human family behavior that adults will enjoy, this is a picture book to make all the family laugh and to read aloud together. Expressive faces, hilarious hairstyles, Dad's great cooking, and a sister and brother's everyday conversation combine in a heartwarming and completely individual picture book from a unique artist with an international following. Eva Lindström was awarded the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in 2022 and has been nominated once for the Hans Christian Award and eight times for the August Award, which she won in 2013. She is a major influence on picture and comic book artists worldwide. Translated from the Swedish edition by Julia Marshall. Other books from Eva Lindström My Dog Mouse Everyone Walks Away Praise for A Bird Day "A quiet story to read over and over."—Kirkus Reviews "[N]ot to be missed."—starred, Youth Services Book Review "Quietly joyous."—Five Books, Best Kids' Books of 2023 "[A]musement comes from the view of birds as having so much—bickering, boredom, complaining—in common with humans."—Publishers Weekly

Book A Two Hundred Year History of Ornithology Avian Biology Bird Watching and Birding in Kansas 1810 2010

Download or read book A Two Hundred Year History of Ornithology Avian Biology Bird Watching and Birding in Kansas 1810 2010 written by Thomas Shane and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The first two centuries of bird study in Kansas essentially can be split into 50 year intervals since Zebulon Pike's 1810 publication, an account of his explorations. The first 50 years were records of explorers crossing Kansas collecting bird specimens; many were Army doctors. The second half of the 19th century was a continuation of explorers and those affiliated with museums obtaining bird specimens and the establishment of colleges and universities with faculty members also collecting birds and making observations. The first half of the 20th century was a period of college faculties primarily composed of vertebrate zoologists who had a few graduate students who studied birds. By 1960, active graduate programs were in place with many professors specializing in taxonomy, physiology, ecology, wildlife biology and behavior which continue to this day. Bird watchers and birders have also played an important role in the study of Kansas birds and continue to do so into the 21st century."--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An hourly guide that follows twenty-four birds as they find food, mates, and safety from predators. From morning to night and from the Antarctic to the equator, birds have busy days. In this short book, ornithologist Mark E. Hauber shows readers exactly how birds spend their time. Each chapter covers a single bird during a single hour, highlighting twenty-four different bird species from around the globe, from the tropics through the temperate zones to the polar regions. We encounter owls and nightjars hunting at night and kiwis and petrels finding their way in the dark. As the sun rises, we witness the beautiful songs of the “dawn chorus.” At eleven o’clock in the morning, we float alongside a common pochard, a duck resting with one eye open to avoid predators. At eight that evening, we spot a hawk swallowing bats whole, gorging on up to fifteen in rapid succession before retreating into the darkness. For each chapter, award-winning artist Tony Angell has depicted these scenes with his signature pen and ink illustrations, which grow increasingly light and then dark as our bird day passes. Working closely together to narrate and illustrate these unique moments in time, Hauber and Angell have created an engaging read that is a perfect way to spend an hour or two—and a true gift for readers, amateur scientists, and birdwatchers.
