Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Imagonna” takes readers to Africa with a young man in his twenties who is West Virginia's first Peace Corps volunteer. Julian Martin taught chemistry and coached the track team at a secondary school in Nigeria where he was confronted with unexpected racism. You will take a third class train trip with him, be there as he faces into an automatic rifle and as he flees from a man weilding a machete. You will be surprised at who he brings home. The author is the eighth generation of his family born in West Virginia's Big Coal River Valley. He has a chemical engineering degree from West Virginia University and worked two years in the chemical industry. After one month training to make sidewinder missiles, he joined the Peace Corps. Since the Peace Corps Julian Martin worked as Foreign Student Adviser at West Virginia University, taught high school chemistry and physics in the San Francisco Bay area and in West Virginia, directed Urban Outreach for the Charleston, WV, YMCA, and was an organic farmer on his family homeplace. The author is on the board of directors of the West Virginia Highlands Conservancy, the Kanawha State Forest Foundation, the West Virginia Labor History Association and the West Virginia Environmental Education Association. In retirement, Julian Martin is active in the efforts to stop the destructive practice of mountain top removal strip mining in his beloved Appalachian Mountains.
Download or read book Burn the Place written by Iliana Regan and published by Scribner. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LONGLISTED for the NATIONAL BOOK AWARD A “blistering yet tender” (Publishers Weekly) memoir that chronicles one chef’s journey from foraging on her family’s Midwestern farm to running her own Michelin-starred restaurant and finding her place in the world. Iliana Regan grew up the youngest of four headstrong girls on a small farm in Indiana. While gathering raspberries as a toddler, Regan learned to only pick the ripe fruit. In the nearby fields, the orange flutes of chanterelle mushrooms beckoned her while they eluded others. Regan’s profound connection with food and the earth began in childhood, but connecting with people was more difficult. She grew up gay in an intolerant community, was an alcoholic before she turned twenty, and struggled to find her voice as a woman working in an industry dominated by men. But food helped her navigate the world around her—learning to cook in her childhood home, getting her first restaurant job at age fifteen, teaching herself cutting-edge cuisine while hosting an underground supper club, and working her way from front-of-house staff to running her own kitchen. Regan’s culinary talent is based on instinct, memory, and an almost otherworldly connection to ingredients, and her writing comes from the same place. Raw, filled with startling imagery and told with uncommon emotional power, Burn the Place takes us from Regan’s childhood farmhouse kitchen to the country’s most elite restaurants in a galvanizing tale that is entirely original, and unforgettable.

Download or read book Union River written by Paul Marion and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Spanning more than forty years of writing, UNION RIVER takes us across the national landscape and mindscape with poems and sketches that delve into our common experience. This lyrical Americana address combines memory work, ecstatic reports from the field, invented scenes, street voices, blog posts, daily news, and representations of life in these states. Writing in closed and open forms, Marion works the language for the best it can give. He shows us the difference between looking and seeing, between hearing and listening, between knowing and understanding. Our nation is a place of grandeur, pain, constant churn, and regular renewal. Every person makes the democratic republic new each day, for good or bad. Paul Marion wants us to use "America" as a verb, an action word.
