Book A bilingual concordance to the targum of the Prophets

Download or read book A bilingual concordance to the targum of the Prophets written by Johannes Cornelis de Moor and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2002 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bilingual (Aramaic-Hebrew) concordance to the Targum of the Prophets is the product of an international project based in the Theological University of the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands, Kampen (ThUK) and supported by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). With this publication a major research tool becomes available to those engaged in Biblical and Jewish Studies. For the first time meaningful quotations from the Targum and the Masoretic Hebrew text of the Bible are set out in parallel so that the user of the concordance can study the translation technique of the Targum in much greater detail than was hitherto possible. For comparative purposes the concordance is published per book of the Prophets. Eventually a complete concordance will become available in electronic form. The concordance makes a wealth of largely unknown material accessible to researchers. The discovery of the presumed-lost Song of the Lamb, referred to in Rev. 15: 3, by members of the editorial team vividly illustrates the importance of such a concordance to both Judaic and New Testament studies. The concordance will also be an indispensable tool for the textual criticism and the history of interpretation of the Hebrew Bible. To facilitate consultation on the basis of the Hebrew, every concordance per book contains a Hebrew-Aramaic index. The final volume will contain additions and corrections, a cumulative Hebrew-Aramaic index, as well as an English-Aramaic index.

Book The Targum of Zephaniah

Download or read book The Targum of Zephaniah written by Ahuva Ho and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-03-16 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This seminal and comprehensive study of Targum Jonathan to Zephaniah focuses on two major facets of exegesis: The twenty-one manuscripts from five different provenances, reflecting a variety of textual traditions and scribal erudition, thus revealing distinct stemmas; and the history of transmission of Targum Jonathan. Divergences from the literality of the MT unveil the emotions – fear, dismay, and hope – and the prayers of the meturgeman, as he reacts to historical events in the near past and in his own time.

Book The Books of the Twelve Prophets

Download or read book The Books of the Twelve Prophets written by Heinz-Josef Fabry and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English summary: This anthology contains the latest research into the Twelve Minor Prophets of the Old Testament. This research is the product of numerous research groups operating internationally and each pursuing detailed questions about the Twelve, such as how (or whether) the prophetic books make sense as a coherent group of texts, the structure of the books, and which motifs appear across the different texts. This volume presents the results of leading researchers and experts who pursue critical questions regarding the intertextual connections between the Minor Prophets, the Major Prophets, and the books of wisdom literature found in the Old Testament. Finally, the theological themes, social criticisms, views on the proper way of life, expectations about the messiah, and theodicy are all questions that are considered in these articles, as well as the reception of these themes in later literature, such as the Qumran texts, the New Testament, and rabbinical literature. The important, and even controversial, nature of the research on these themes reveals a striking debate about the power of God in the books of the Minor Prophets.

Book Studies in Stemmatology II

Download or read book Studies in Stemmatology II written by Pieter van Reenen and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004-09-23 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stemmatology is the discipline that attempts to reconstruct the transmission of a text on the basis of relations between the various surviving manuscripts. The object of this volume is the evaluation of the most recent methods and techniques in the field of stemmatology, as well as the development of new ones. The book is largely interdisciplinary in character: it contains contributions from scholars from classical, historical, biblical, medieval and modern language studies, as well as from mathematical and computer scientists and biologists. The contributions in the book have been divided into two sections. The first section deals with various stemmatological methods and techniques. The second section focuses more specifically on the various problems concerning textual variation. An earlier volume on Studies in Stemmatology was published in 1996 and opened the most actual state of the art in stemmatology to a broad audience. That first volume was very well received by stemmatologists and also gave an impulse to new research, as several articles in the current volume clearly illustrate. Both volumes are of interest to scholars in (historical) linguistics, literary studies, Bible studies, classical studies, medieval studies, and history.

Book The Septuagint and Messianism

Download or read book The Septuagint and Messianism written by Michael Anthony Knibb and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of the extent to which the Septuagint reflects an evolution in messianic belief in comparison with the Masoretic Text has come into prominence in recent years, and in view of the role played by messianism in Jewish belief of the late Second Temple period and in early Christianity it seemed very appropriate that "The Septuagint and Messianism" should be chosen as the theme of the 2004 Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense. This volume contains the papers given at the Colloquium, which are concerned both with methodological issues and with the interpretation of specific texts (in practice the majority of the texts in the Septuagint for which a messianic interpretation has been claimed). The papers are very far from all reflecting the same approach, and it has frequently happened that the same texts have been treated by different contributors from very different viewpoints. But the fact such different viewpoints are expressed is a proper reflection of the complexity of the issues involved in the question of the extent of messianic belief in the Septuagint, and of the fact that the question requires a nuanced answer. It is in any case hoped that the varied approaches reflected in the papers will serve to make clear the underlying reasons for the differences between those who take a "minimalist" and those who take a "maximalist" view on the subject of the Septuagint and Messianism.

Book Targum and New Testament

Download or read book Targum and New Testament written by Martin McNamara and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2011 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relevance of the Targums (Aramaic translations of the Hebrew Bible) for the understanding of the New Testament has been a matter of dispute over the past three hundred years, principally by reason of the late date of the Targum manuscripts and the nature of the Aramaic. The debate has become more focused by reason of the Qumran finds of pre-Christian Aramaic documents (1947) and the identification of a complete text of the Palestinian Targum of the Pentateuch in the Vatican Library (Codex Neofiti, 1956). Martin McNamara traces the history of the debate down to our own day and the annotated translation of all the Targums into English. He studies the language situation (Aramaic and Greek) in New Testament Palestine and the interpretation of the Scriptures in the Targums, with concepts and language similar to the New Testament. Against this background relationships between the Targums and the New Testament are examined. A way forward is suggested by regarding the tell-like structure of the Targums (with layers from different ages) and a continuum running through for certain texts.
