This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Henry Harrison, John Tyler and James Knox Polk In the notable year 1774 the Virginia House of Burgesses took upon itself the character of a State Convention and elected seven delegates to the Continental Congress. This body of patriotic legislators was to meet in Philadelphia, and was to do a great deal more and better work than anybody dreamed of beforehand. Thomas Jefferson knew all the Virginia delegates, and said of them that they had been selected remarkably well. They were representative men, he said, and not one of them was a more perfect representative of the people than was big, burly, bluff Ben Harrison. Download or read book Presidents from Adams through Polk 1825 1849 written by David A. Smith and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2005-06-30 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the Era of Good Feelings, but all was not well with the young Republic. From 1825 to 1849, presidents John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and James K. Polk grappled with the legacy of the Monroe Doctrine, Indian removal, territorial expansion, the National Bank, tariffs, economic depressions, War with Mexico, near war with Great Britain, and the place of slavery in the growing nation. As one would expect from confident citizens of the burgeoning young country, conflicting arguments swirled around the hot-button issues of the day. This rich resource of primary documents enables students to read these arguments first hand, and feel the passions and study the logic driving their often forceful positions. All of the primary documents are annotated and placed into historical context. A thorough index concludes the work.

Book John Tyler

Download or read book John Tyler written by Gary May and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2008-12-09 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first "accidental president," whose secret maneuverings brought Texas into the Union and set secession in motion When William Henry Harrison died in April 1841, just one month after his inauguration, Vice President John Tyler assumed the presidency. It was a controversial move by this Southern gentleman, who had been placed on the fractious Whig ticket with the hero of Tippecanoe in order to sweep Andrew Jackson's Democrats, and their imperial tendencies, out of the White House. Soon Tyler was beset by the Whigs' competing factions. He vetoed the charter for a new Bank of the United States, which he deemed unconstitutional, and was expelled from his own party. In foreign policy, as well, Tyler marched to his own drummer. He engaged secret agents to help resolve a border dispute with Britain and negotiated the annexation of Texas without the Senate's approval. The resulting sectional divisions roiled the country. Gary May, a historian known for his dramatic accounts of secret government, sheds new light on Tyler's controversial presidency, which saw him set aside his dedication to the Constitution to gain his two great ambitions: Texas and a place in history.

Book John Tyler the Accidental President

Download or read book John Tyler the Accidental President written by Edward P. Crapol and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2012-01-18 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first vice president to become president on the death of the incumbent, John Tyler (1790-1862) was derided by critics as "His Accidency." In this biography of the tenth president, Edward P. Crapol challenges depictions of Tyler as a die-hard advocate of states' rights, limited government, and a strict interpretation of the Constitution. Instead, he argues, Tyler manipulated the Constitution to increase the executive power of the presidency. Crapol also highlights Tyler's faith in America's national destiny and his belief that boundless territorial expansion would preserve the Union as a slaveholding republic. When Tyler sided with the Confederacy in 1861, he was branded as America's "traitor" president for having betrayed the republic he once led.

Book REGARDLESS THEY WERE THE PRESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES

Download or read book REGARDLESS THEY WERE THE PRESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES written by DR. RICHARD F. FELICETTI and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-03 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My name is Dr. Richard F. Felicetti. I have always been interested in the history of the United States, especially Presidents of the United States. In the early 1960's I started and still do today, collecting Presidential Campaign Buttons. My professional career was in the Field of Education. After two years of Military Service, I began my professional career. I was a Teacher, Principal at three levels-Grade School, Junior High School and High School, Director of a Head Start Summer Program, Adjunct College Professor and Superintendent of a Grade School District. I retired as Superintendent of School District 206, Bloom Township High School in Chicago Heights, Illinois, the high school district that I graduated from in 1951. When I graduated from high school, I went on to receive my Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Northern Illinois University. I received my Ph.D. from Walden University in 1993. When I retired from education in 1994, I asked myself what can I do that would be of interest. With my hobby of collecting Presidential Campaign Buttons, I thought it would be fun, exciting and certainly interesting to visit all the gravesites of the deceased Presidents of the United States. I began my journey in 1999 and completed it in 2012. During that time, I have visited every gravesite of our deceased presidents and in some cases I have visited them on many occasions. When I visited the gravesites, I would take thirty to forty photographs of them. From the very beginning, I knew that someday I would write a book covering my thoughts and experiences that I had while on was on my journey. I have now completed my book. I have written a story about each visit to the presidential gravesites. To go along with each story, I would like to have certain photographs printed of the presidential gravesites. In addition to writing about my visits to the presidential gravesites, I have written my Introduction, Epilogue, Acknowledgements, Dedication and also About the Author. I do feel my story will create interest, make a person smile and at times bring tears to the eyes of the reader. It is a story that was heart warming for me to do and I am hopeful that I may share it with the world. I presently live in Peoria, Arizona with my wife, Sharon. As we continue to travel, we will continue to visit presidential gravesites. Every visit is different, always meaningful, moving, sometimes sad, but always tells me that my story has to be shared.
