Book Herring and People of the North Pacific

Download or read book Herring and People of the North Pacific written by Thomas F. Thornton and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2021-01-31 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herring are vital to the productivity and health of marine systems, and socio-ecologically Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) is one of the most important fish species in the Northern Hemisphere. Human dependence on herring has evolved for millennia through interactions with key spawning areas—but humans have also significantly impacted the species’ distribution and abundance. Combining ethnological, historical, archaeological, and political perspectives with comparative reference to other North Pacific cultures, Herring and People of the North Pacific traces fishery development in Southeast Alaska from precontact Indigenous relationships with herring to postcontact focus on herring products. Revealing new findings about current herring stocks as well as the fish’s significance to the conservation of intraspecies biodiversity, the book explores the role of traditional local knowledge, in combination with archeological, historical, and biological data, in both understanding marine ecology and restoring herring to their former abundance.

He has also, for the first time, established the important fact, that herrings Visit our coasts twice in the year, - that, in fact, there is a winter and a summer herring periodically arriving on the different coasts; and already, from this knowledge, additional supplies have been obtained where no previous fishery existed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Herring: Its Effect on the History of Britain No one who studies national economics of past centuries can fail to be impressed by evi deuces of the close connection between the foreign policy of England and her national trade interest, though during the nineteenth century that connection was growing looser, and, in the two or three decades just before this war, had begun to disappear. Wool and herring in the period covered by the twelfth to the seventeenth centuries were what would now be called key industries. It was on them our national policy may be said to have largely turned whenever the rulers of England entered upon discussions, peaceful or warlike, with other nations. Further, our political action, whether in respect of domestic or foreign policy, was silently but ultimately based upon that national system of economics which was for the most part represented by the words wool and herring.
