N 0 author was too great to find a place for his work in an Annual, and, as we look over the volumes now, it seems as if none were too obscure. The arrangement is chronological, by actual date of publication so far as can be traced, though this is not always the date upon the title - page. The custom of post-dating books is an old one. Books sent out toward the end of one year, in order that they may not so soon lose their freshness, are' dated as of the next year. In the case of most of the Annuals also, they, like almanacs, were published the year before. It may lead to confusion to find the Atlantic Souvenir of 1827 entered under the publication date of 1826, and this arrangement is something of an innovation. But a strict chronological arrangement has seemed best, and when a particular book is sought for, a reference to the short-title check list in the pages immediately following, or a reference to the In dex, will indicate the page required. The collations are fuller than are given in most bibliographies of modern books, and it is hoped that they are full enough. Page numbers included within brackets indicate only that the pages are unnumbered. Especially in the case of text pages, generally all are numbered excepting only the first. OUTRE-MER INTRODUCTORY NOTE In 1826 Mr. Longfellow made his first journey to Europe, and remained there for study and travel until the summer of 1829. It was toward the end of his residence abroad that he began the preparation of sketches for publication. "I am also writing a book," he wrote to his father from Gb'ttingen, May 15, 1829, -- " a kind of Sketch-Book of scenes in France, Spain, and Italy." Irving's Sketch-Book was at that time by far the most successful of American reports of the Old World, and it became the model for other books of the kind. It had been a great favorite with Mr. Longfellow, and in some of his juvenile productions he had taken it for a suggestion; but although he used the name when writing of his proposed book, he did not carry out his plans upon the lines of Irving's work. After his return to America he was kept closely occupied by the duties of his professorship in Bowdoin College, and by the preparation of text-books for the use of his classes; but in 1831 he was asked by Mr. Joseph T. Buckingham to contribute to The New England Magazine. This magazine was one of the most promising of Mr. Buckingham's various ventures, and contained articles, sketches, and poems by Everett, Story, Hillard, Hildreth, Dr. Howe, Dr. Peabody, Epes Sargent, Holmes, and many of less repute. It was in this magazine that Dr. Holmes published a trial chapter of the Autocrat, but so completely had the title disappeared that nobody remembered it when he resumed it twenty-five years afterward, in the more mature wit and wisdom which made the early numbers of The Atlantic Monthly famous.
