Book The Making of New Zealand Cricket

Download or read book The Making of New Zealand Cricket written by Greg Ryan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is generally forgotten that cricket rather than rugby union was the 'national game' in New Zealand until the early years of the twentieth century. This book shows why and how cricket developed in New Zealand and how its character changed across time. Greg Ryan examines the emergence and growth of cricket in relation to diverse patterns of European settlement in New Zealand - such as the systematic colonization schemes of Edward Gibbon Wakefield and the gold discoveries of the 1860s. He then considers issues such as cricket and social class in the emerging cities; cricket and the elite school system; the function of the game in shaping relations between the New Zealand provinces; cricket encounters with the Australian colonies in the context of an 'Australasian' world. A central theme is cricketing relations with England at a time when New Zealand society was becoming acutely conscious of both its own identity and its place within the British Empire. This imperial relationship reveals structures, ideals and objectives unique to New Zealand. Articulate, engaging and entertaining, Ryan demonstrates convincingly how the cricketing experience of New Zealand was quite different from that of other colonies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an explosion in the quantity of sports history literature published in recent years, making it increasingly difficult to keep abreast of developments. The annual number of publications has increased from around 250 to 1,000 a year over the last decade. This is due in part to the fact that during the late 1980s and 90s, many clubs, leagues and governing bodies of sport have celebrated their centenaries and produced histories to mark this occasion and commemorate their achievements. It is also the result of the growing popularity and realisation of the importance of sport history research within academe. This international bibliography of books, articles, conference proceedings and essays in the English language is a one-stop for the sports historian to know what is new.

Book The Last Everyday Hero

Download or read book The Last Everyday Hero written by Richard Boock and published by Penguin Random House New Zealand Limited. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magical book about Bert Sutcliffe, the magical batsman who put New Zealand cricket on the map. This book is a tale of two men: one who became the first hero of New Zealand cricket, and one whose lifelong dream was to write his biography. Bert Sutcliffe, a stout-hearted giant of the post-war cricketing world, never did get to see his long-awaited story hit the press. He died in 2001 aged 77, leaving behind a trail of re-written record books. And what records those were: whether it's the stories about Sutcliffe's brace of centuries for Otago against the MCC in 1947, about his two triple centuries in the Plunket Shield, his heart-wrenching partnership with Blair at Johannesburg, or his heroics at Kolkata during his comeback tour, there were no shortage of highlights. It's not hard to understand Rod Nye's desire to write Sutcliffe's biography. Quite apart from the sheer enormity of Sutcliffe's influence on New Zealand cricket and his massive popularity as a player, a full biography of his life and career had been long overdue. Tragically, Nye, who had been nearing the completion of his life's mission, died in 2004, leaving behind a treasure trove of research on the remarkable batsman, much of it never before heard. In The Last Everyday Hero, highly regarded cricketing writer and commentator Richard Boock joins the talents of these two men and completes the story. Many of those who have contributed to this book have also since departed; it is New Zealand cricket's field of dreams.

Book Strong Beautiful and Modern

Download or read book Strong Beautiful and Modern written by Charlotte Macdonald and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1930s and early 1940s, a wave of state-sponsored “national fitness” programs swept Britain and its former settler colonies. In Strong, Beautiful and Modern, Charlotte Macdonald shows how governments encouraged citizens to be healthier and more active, thereby reinforcing the cultural ties of the Empire. At a time when government concern over public health issues such as obesity are once again on the rise, Macdonald explains why the first national fitness drive ultimately failed. This book is a lively investigation into how people and governments think about their health and well-being, and how those historical views have shaped our modern life.

Death stares and old-fashion lip are used in combination with explosive pace, tactical guile and the ability to make a cricket ball do unprecedentedly vicious things. The Quicks profiles the most successful, frighteningly-fast and charismatic Australian bowlers to ever terrorise the Poms… and every other cricketing nation. Author Robert Drane tells the stories of the men who have captivated the Australian sporting public, from Lillee and Thomson, to McGrath, Johnson and the modern menace of Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood.
