Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Bibliography of American Foraminifera While the mimeographed Micropaleontology Bulletin of Stanford University is not a publication in the strict sense, it is nevertheless available to many workers, and as it includes valu able records, it is included here. Most of the new literature on the Foraminifera is recorded quarterly in the Contributions from this Laboratory, so that with the present bibliography it is possible for the worker to keep in contact with the literature on American Foraminifera. Book The Bibliography of the Foraminifera Recent and Fossil

Download or read book The Bibliography of the Foraminifera Recent and Fossil written by Anthony Woodward and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-02 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bibliography of the Foraminifera Recent and Fossil: Including Eozoon and Receptaculites; 1565-Jan. 1, 1886 This bibliography, which is the result of five years of research, is based largely on facilities afforded by the libraries of the Amer ican Museum of Natural History and of the New York Academy of Sciences, - facilities which are not enjoyed by many scientific students. At the beginning I had no idea of presenting this work to the scientific world. When I began the study ofthe foraminifera I had no knowledge whatever of that which had been done in this branch of science. After I commenced look ing up the subject the references accumulated so rapidly that I thought it might be well to collect and put them in shape so that they might be useful to others as well as to myself. After three years' labor I applied to Mr. H. B. Brady, F. R. S., for information pertaining to the subject. He at once informed me that he had in press a bibliography of the same character, and kindly offered to give me any assistance he could. When the British Association for the Advancement of Science met at Montreal, in 1884, I met in New York Mr. James Thom son, F. G. S., a member from Scotland, to whom I Spoke of my work, asking his advice about proceeding with it. He urged me to continue, and to finish it, as it would become accessible to a great number of workers who could not possess the valuable monograph of Mr. H. B. Brady. Forty-eight genera are represented by 159 Species, ranging from the Cambrian upward. Of these, 125 are from the Paleozoic and 34 from the Meso zoic. The Cambrian, Ordovician, and Jurassic brachiopods require further study, since authors have given little or no attention to their internal characters, and also have too readily identified them with well-known European species. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Index to the Genera and Species of the Foraminifera Systematic work on Foraminifera during the past forty years has received a tremendous impulse from their economic value, especially that concerned with the search for petroleum and more recently with ecologic and paleoecologic studies. At present there is a larger number of paleontologists actively engaged in foraminiferal studies than is specializing in any other group of the invertebrates. Because of the daily increasing volume of published material, it is difficult to keep abreast of nomenclatural changes in current work. It is based upon the known geologic his tory of the genera, upon the phylogenetic characters through a study of much fossil material and finally by a study of the ontogeny in very many microspheric specimens which show the relationships much more definitely than do the megalospheric specimens of the same species. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foraminifera: An Introduction to the Study of the Protozoa The classical volume of Dr. W. B. Carpenter, written in conjunction with Professors Kitchen Parker and Rupert Jones, is still an exceedingly valuable book for workers in this special branch of study, for it contains the pioneer work of those authors on the morphology and microscopic shell structure of Foraminifera. The monographs of Drs. W. C. Williamson and H. B. Brady are also indispensable as works of reference. But these and others more recently published are voluminous and not always easily accessible to the student; whilst the increasingly large number of smaller works on the subject, written by Continental, English, and other authors, which have from time to time appeared in the various publications of Scientific Societies and in periodicals and journals, are quite outside the scope of the general student's reading. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Classed and Annotated Bibliography of the Palæozoic Crustacea, 1698-1892: To Which Is Added a Catalogue of North American Species I am well aware that the value of a work of this kind depends upon the care and labor given to its compila tion. Every possible means of obtaining accurate in formation from a miscellaneous class of literature in many languages has been used, and it is hoped that there are but few errors and omissions. I would thank those into whose hands this paper may fall for any information that would add to its value as a working hand-book.
