Book excerpt: Excerpt from Swinburne's Proof Sheets and American First Editions: Bibliographical Data Relating to a Few of the Publications of Algernon Charles Swinburne, With Notes on the Priority of Certain Claimants to the Distinction of "Editio Princeps" Swinburne's life was one of many quarrels and fiery conflicts with friends, authors and publishers. The most bitter of all these was that with Robert Buchanan; and Mr. Wise devotes many pages to this controversy. 'under the Microscope, ' 1872, was Swinburne's reply to the attack made by Buchanan upon Rossetti and himself in 'the Fleshly School of Poetry.' The edition consisted of five hundred copies. Immediately one leaf was cancelled, only four or five copies being preserved, and a reprinted leaf with the changed passage rela tive to the characters in Tennyson's 'idylls of the King, ' was pasted on the stub. In the Harry Elkins Widener Collection are two copies, one with the original leaf, and the other with the reprinted one, and also the manuscript apparently as it went to the printer. Mr. Wise prints many letters and manuscripts concerning this controversy, which have not previously been published. 'under the Microscope' was never reprinted in England, but Mosher published an edition in 1899, which gives the text of the reprinted leaf, not the original. But this plan was soon found to be inconvenient. More Mss. came to light than had been anticipated, and this meant that either I had to hurry over, the task of transcription and printing, or that Watts-Dunton had to wait for an indefinite period before he received payment for his rights. Hence the arrangement was modified, and for the bulk of the unpublished papers I paid prices which included the value of the copyrights. It had also been agreed as a part of the original bargain that Watts-Dunton should contribute Introductions whenever such were required, but only upon two or three occasions were these supplied by him. Others were readily promised, but the promises were never redeemed. Increasing feebleness and failing eyesight rendered it impossible for the aged critic to do what under more favourable conditions he would doubtless have regarded as a pleasant interlude, rather than as a duty for which he had definitely engaged himself. But fortune smiled upon my adventure, for it chanced that Mr. Gosse was vastly interested in the accounts I gave him of the transactions that were taking place, and was even more attracted by the nature and extent of the papers I was slowly but steadily acquiring. With the utmost generosity he offered to assist me in deciphering the Mss., some of which were of an extremely complicated nature; in addition he volunteered to provide the necessary Introductions, and I never appealed for one in vain. For this unselfish aid students of Swinburne in general, and I myself in particular, can never be sufficiently grateful.
