Book Reflective Thinking in Educational Settings

Download or read book Reflective Thinking in Educational Settings written by Alessandro Antonietti and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the role that culture plays in the acquisition of cognitive, linguistic, and social skills. Taking reflective thinking as a central analytical concept, the contributors investigate the role of personal reflection in a series of mental activities, including the creation of social relationships, the creation of a mental narrative to make sense of events, and metacognition. These three types of cognition are usually conceived of as separate research fields. Reflective Thinking in Educational Settings draws these discrete subfields into dialogue, exploring the connections and interplay among them. This approach yields insight into a range of topics, including language acquisition, cognitive processes, theory of mind, cross-cultural interaction, and social development. The volume also outlines the implications of these findings in terms of further research and possible social policy initiatives.

Book excerpt: In this stunningly illustrated picture book, a curious caterpillar searches for the true meaning of the word "beautiful." But is there one true meaning--or many? A caterpillar lives a simple life on his leaf until one day when an Unknown Thing picks him up, calls him beautiful, and promptly exits, leaving the caterpillar wondering: What is beautiful? The caterpillar decides to embark on a quest, asking each animal in the forest, What is beautiful? Much to his surprise, each animal has a different response: A bear declares that honeycomb is beautiful, the squirrels find dry leaves to be beautiful, and a mole says his burrow is beautiful. All the while, the blackbird disagrees with each answer, pointing out that an empty can is beautiful. What's a caterpillar to do? When the day is done, the animals finally agree that one thing in the forest is truly beautiful. But what is it?

Book The Emperor s New Mathematics

Download or read book The Emperor s New Mathematics written by Catherine Jami and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1644 the Qing dynasty seized power in China. Its Manchu elite were at first seen by most of their subjects as foreigners from beyond the Great Wall, and the consolidation of Qing rule presented significant cultural and political problems, as well as military challenges. It was the Kangxi emperor (r. 1662-1722) who set the dynasty on a firm footing, and one of his main stratagems to achieve this was the appropriation for imperial purposes of the scientific knowledge brought to China by the Jesuit mission (1582-1773). For almost two centuries, the Jesuits put the sciences in the service of evangelization, teaching and practising what came to be known as 'Western learning' among Chinese scholars, many of whom took an active interest in it. After coming to the throne as a teenager, Kangxi began his life-long intervention in mathematical and scientific matters when he forced a return to the use of Western methods in official astronomy. In middle life, he studied astronomy, musical theory and mathematics, with Jesuits as his teachers. In his last years he sponsored a great compilation covering these three disciplines, and set several of his sons to work on this project. All of this activity formed a vital part of his plan to establish Manchu authority over the Chinese. This book explains why Kangxi made the sciences a tool for laying the foundations of empire, and to show how, as part of this process, mathematics was reconstructed as a branch of imperial learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vatican adoption scandal seen on 60 Minutes. “I was spellbound . . . one of the best books I’ve recently read” —Elizabeth Strout, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Olive Kitteridge. A powerful church. An acquiescent government. In The Price of Children, investigative journalist Maria Laurino details the shocking story of mothers and children deceived and exploited as directed by the highest levels of the Vatican. Between 1950 and 1970, the Vatican and the American Catholic Church sent nearly four thousand Italian children to the United States for adoption into “good” Catholic homes. With the religious stigma of unwed motherhood turning families against daughters and a Church and State wanting “illegitimate” children sent abroad, mothers were lied to, given forms to sign that they didn’t understand, or even told their baby had died, all to further supply this international adoption pipeline. Maria Laurino uncovers archival correspondence among priests who ran this program; provides testimonies from birth mothers and their adopted children; and with passion and insight, considers how the intersection of Catholicism, women, sex, and sin shaped private lives. The Price of Children is a moving and brilliant account about the tenacity of people searching for their origins and trying to answer long-buried questions. It is a chilling lesson for post-Dobbs America as the author describes the danger of a powerful church and acquiescent government dictating the shape of a woman’s life. “I could not put this book down. An amazing read. Laurino eloquently unfolds the nefarious history of the Italian ‘war adoptions’ in a manner that is entirely readable and clear as a bell, her research precise and well rendered.” —Elizabeth Strout, Pulitzer Prize–winning author “An extraordinary work of investigative journalism.” —Corriere della Sera “By shedding light on the mistreatment suffered by single mothers of that time, [The Price of Children] invites all women to defend those civil rights which, today, are questioned in many parts of the world.” —Vanity Fair Italia “[An] astonishing investigative work. . . . Maria Laurino’s painful, very rich and very human book. . . . Helps us ask fundamental questions about the present and the future.” —Doppiozero
