He was an assistant or head football coach at three high schools (McColl, Newberry and Eau Claire--all in South Carolina) and six universities (Clemson, Texas Tech, Furman, The Citadel, East Carolina and Florida State), and concluded his career as associate athletic director at the University of South Carolina. The first chapter details his early life (birth through high school) in the 1930s and 40s. The second and third chapters cover, respectively, his college years as a student and football player at Presbyterian College and his two years in the army at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Each of Chapters 4 through 14 provides an account of his time as a coach at the aforementioned high schools and universities. The last chapter covers his retirement years. While the book focuses on football, it should be a good read for persons who are not necessarily football devotees. For example, the first chapter gives a vivid picture of life in South Carolina during the 1930s and 40s, when many people grew their own food (including meats, fruits and vegetables), and when indoor plumbing, telephones, and even toilet paper were mostly nonexistent. Additionally, the book is replete with humorous anecdotes--both football related and non football related. And, it gives many examples of high-moral living. For football devotees, the book gives insight into behind-the-scenes activities in high school and university athletics. Such activities include working with players, other coaches, and school administrators as well as happenings both on and off the field. On a personal basis, the book gives a look into the life of a fine man, a Christian man, and a true southern gentleman--and a great coach. It gives many details about his family and family life as well as his many friends. If you were fortunate to know Coach Baker, you will be happy to read the account of his life. If you did not know him, you will likely wish you had after reading the book. As you read this book, you almost certainly will at times chuckle, guffaw, and tear up. And, on a couple occasions you may be surprised or even shocked. All in all, you will likely be engaged.

Should I go downbeat, with a column about the travails of fallen Super Bowl hero Timmy Smith, or upbeat with a column about Bob Sepulveda, Alamogordo High School's fine and dedicated boys track coach? I flipped a coin, and it came down on its edge. The face is, in an ironic sort of way, the two go together. Sepulveda is a perfect example of the many scholastic coaches who send a positive message to their athletes. Smith is a perfect example of an athlete who, apparently, never got the message. Smith's story, of course, was not always so downbeat. Six years ago, in fact the Hobbs native seemed to have the world at his feet. What a story it was Smith, a superstar running back at Hobbs High School, had overcome a disappointing, injury-plagued college career at Texas Tech to make the roster of the National Football League's Washington Redskins. January 31st, 1988, the 23-year-oldrookie made Super Bowl History with a record 204 years rushing in the Redskins'42-10 victory over the Denver Broncos. The city of Hobbs and the state of New Mexico were justifiably proud of this native son. Before and after the Super Bowl, memorials praising Smith were introduced in the New Mexico Legislature. On February 15, two of those memorials were approved by the state senate-despite embarrassing news that Smith owed nearly $6,000 in delinquent child support payments. The news regarding Smith never really got better. THE LONGEST RUN... ...Sepulveda isn't Knute Rockne; he is just a good, hard-working coach and a good responsible person who cares about the kids in his charge. That for anyone who is paying attention, is all the message that is necessary. The beginning of the football season was the most anticipated time of the year. No matter what the last season had brought, everyone just knew that this would be the season, the year, the championship year. Not only had the football team been learning their plays and working out, the cheerleaders, band members, and drill squad had put in long hours in the hot muggy south Louisiana sunshine getting ready for the first big game of the season. Ben was as ready as he could possibly be. He had not only practiced with the team in the spring and again in August, but also had kicked field goals, practiced punting and kick offs all summer long in his spacious back yard, still he had little hopes of getting in a game this season. Just his luck to grow up near Baton Rouge, the home of so many outstanding football players. Callie was ready for school and breathing room after surviving a rough patch at home with the family. Moving to a new and bigger house near her friends was great. Ann would like to press a Restart button, but then again, this was her first game to face the football field and really see the game. Maybe giving up a skimpy outfit, jumping, and screaming for an hour wasn't so great after all-maybe. The desire to be accepted guides the lives of Callie, Ben, and Ann. These middle school, junior and senior high school students experience both personal problems and personal successes. All in plain sight of each other and the rest of their classmates.
