  • Release : 1978
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 104 pages

Download or read book Wastewater Disinfection in Canada written by Canada. Water Pollution Control Directorate and published by [Hull, Quebec] : Environment Canada, Environmental Protection Service. This book was released on 1978 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes existing wastewater disinfection requirements throughout Canada, and in the United States and Europe. The effectiveness of chlorination in combatting the spread of waterborne disease is assessed, and the possible effects of residual chlorine and chlorination byproducts on man and aquatic species are discussed. Disinfection alternatives are reviewed with respect to their effectiveness in reducing pathogens, availability, relative costs, environmental impact and other practical considerations. Emphasis has been placed on the need to recognize the dual requirements for protection of both public health and the environment in formulating policies and criteria for wastewater disinfection.

Book Effective Cross Border Monitoring Systems for Waterborne Microbial Pathogens

Download or read book Effective Cross Border Monitoring Systems for Waterborne Microbial Pathogens written by Joan B. Rose and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2008-05-14 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a real-world analysis of how to quantify and prioritize water-based microbial threats to human health, how to design data collection systems that truly support management decisions, and how to build a comprehensive monitoring program when dealing with cross-boundary issues. International borders and cross-boundary issues complicate water resource management. Even if nations or jurisdictions agree on the nature and source of the problem, differing legal frameworks complicate cross-border management, as the procedural steps and time necessary to implement a solution vary among entities. Waterborne pathogens transcend political boundaries and challenge the use of traditional political jurisdictions in meeting public policy objectives to protect human health. Disease outbreaks caused by waterborne pathogens continue to occur, even in the developed world. There has been a pronounced trend toward new and increasingly complex institutions and policies to address regional water quality management issues. However, many questions continue to arise regarding the effective management of regional resources. These questions include how to design effective monitoring strategies and what can be learned from previous successes and failures. The Laurentian Great Lakes offers a model system for exploring these questions. This book will be a valuable reference source for researchers and graduate students working in environmental science, microbiology, engineering, and biological sciences, as well as all those concerned with water quality monitoring programs.

  • Publisher : Texas A&M University Press
  • Release : 2015-05-13
  • ISBN : 1623493013
  • Pages : 586 pages

Download or read book The American Sea written by Rezneat Milton Darnell and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-13 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a decade, Rezneat Darnell worked on this major synthesis of what is known about the Gulf of Mexico. His goal: to bring a deeper understanding of “the American Sea” to students, scientists, managers, and educated citizens of the public at large. The American Sea builds on Darnell’s own research, the research of his graduate students, government agency research reports, data synthesis reports, and literature summaries to present a holistic view of the Gulf of Mexico. Although he is recognized as a pioneer in the study of continental shelf ecology, Darnell largely resisted specialization, remaining throughout his career “the writer and bringer together of things.” Here, he has written a book that embraces history, geology, geography, meteorology, chemistry, biology, ecology, and human relations in one comprehensive reference. Although it is thorough and meticulous in coverage, what comes through in these pages is the enormity, complexity, and mystery of the world that lies just beyond the Texas vacation beach, the Louisiana wetland, or the Mexico fishing village. In addition to photographs of deep water and other organisms that are included in the book, a number of illustrations have been added to provide excellent visual material, including historical and ocean floor maps and many works of original art depicting marine species, sea turtles, fish, and crustaceans.

Book Novel Insights into the Circulation Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Function of the Gulf of Mexico A Perspective from Mexican Waters in Support of Oil Spill Preparedness

Download or read book Novel Insights into the Circulation Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Function of the Gulf of Mexico A Perspective from Mexican Waters in Support of Oil Spill Preparedness written by Maria Josefina Olascoaga and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM), and given the increased activities of the offshore oil industry, an international multidisciplinary consortium - the CIGOM Consortium - was funded by Mexico's Energy Secretariat (SENER) and its National Council for Science and Technology (CONACyT). Spanning 2015-2022, CIGOM's goals were to establish an environmental baseline to characterize the southern GOM’s natural variability and contribute to the understanding of ecosystem function, use cutting-edge technologies to observe the ocean, couple physical circulation and biogeochemical models to gain understating of oceanographic processes, generate oil spill scenarios using model ensembles and statistical techniques and conducting vulnerability assessments. Over 300 researchers participated in the CIGOM consortium's efforts.
