Download or read book The Politics of Water in Post War Britain written by Glen O'Hara and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-10 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to cover the British people’s late twentieth century engagement with water in all its domestic, national and international forms, and from bathing and household chores to controversies about maritime pollution. The British Isles, a relatively wet and rainy archipelago, cannot in any way be said to be short of liquid resources. Even so, it was the site of highly contentious and revealing political controversies over the meaning and use of water after the Second World War. A series of such issues divided political parties, pressure groups, government and voters, and form the subject matter of this book: problems as diverse as flood defence to river and beach cleanliness, from the teaching of swimming to the installation of hot and cold running water in the home, from international controls over maritime pollution, and from the different housework duties of men and women to the British state’s proposals to fluoridise the drinking water supply.
Download or read book The Official History of Privatisation Vol II written by David Parker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Volume II of Professor Parker's authoritative Official History of Privatisation, covering the period from the re-election of Margaret Thatcher in 1987 to the election of Tony Blair in 1997. Volume II considers in detail several of the major privatisations, including those of airports, steel, water, electricity, coal and the railways, as well as a number of smaller ones. Each privatisation involved major challenges in terms of industrial restructuring, organising successful sales and, in a number of cases, establishing effective regulatory regimes. The policy evolved and new methods of selling and regulating were put in place that enabled further disposals to occur. Monolithic nationalised industries with their emphasis on the benefits of economies of scale, vertical integration and rationalisation, were replaced by industrial structures rooted in the importance of commercial management, risk taking and competition. In government departments and parts of the National Health Service, direct employees were replaced by private contractors, and private investment became a characteristic of public infrastructure in the form of PFI/PPP schemes. This study draws heavily on the official records of the British government, to which the author was given full access and on interviews with the leading figures involved in each of the privatisations, including ex-ministers, civil servants, business and City figures, as well as academics that have studied the subject. This book will of great interest to students of privatisation, British political history and of business and economics in general.
Download or read book Water Planning in Britain written by Dennis J. Parker and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-03 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1980, this book provides a penetrating and scholarly analysis of the planning of water resources, based on 10 years’ of research into one of Britain’s most vital industries. At the time of original publication Britain had a plentiful natural supply of water, but accessible clean water was scarce; droughts were not uncommon, floods often caused considerable damage; water bills were rising dramatically and consumption increasing inexorably. All of which applies as much to water resources in the UK today. Water planners must strike a delicate balance between many conflicting social, environmental, political and financial demands. Britain’s water authorities are large and autonomous organisations subject to constant change and controversy. Water policies affect not only water but also land-use planning, recreation planning, environmental quality, food production and the maintenance of public health. The book explains common threads and issues in the planning of 4 main water functions: water supply, effluent disposal and pollution control, water recreation and amenity and land drainage and flood alleviation. 11 original British case studies have been selected to illustrate the issues involved. The final chapter presents a critical and controversial evaluation of water policy and planning institutions in Britain, highlighted by some international comparisons.

Download or read book British Rivers written by John Lewin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-03 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1981, this book describes and interprets the physical nature of British rivers and is authored by leading authors from universities, the Institute of Hydrology and a water Authority. The contents include data on river regimes and catchment characteristics, information on water quality in both polluted and unpolluted rivers, a full discussion of river channels and their erosion and sediment characteristics, and a consideration of river management problems in the distinctive British context. Where possible, nationwide information is presented in map form and many of the maps presented a national picture for the first time. The book will be of interest to students and scientists in a wide range of disciplines: geography, geology, environmental science, hydrology and engineering. Those professionally engaged in environmental management and the water industry should also find it useful. In summary, all who are concerned with rivers – as agents of landscape change, sedimenting phenomena, environmental resources or flood hazards will find this book as relevant now as when it was first published.
