Book A B C of Hydrodynamics Classic Reprint

Download or read book A B C of Hydrodynamics Classic Reprint written by R. De Villamil and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A B C of Hydrodynamics Fifty years elapsed, and then Lord Kelvin said, practically, the same thing: Thus it is that gravity, which could not affect the motion of a liquid entirely filling a rigid closed vessel, will exercise a most important influence on the motion Ofa liquid contained in an open vessel, and exposing a free surface to the atmospheric pressure. Some parts of the book are necessarily contentious. L have, however, when I disagree with the ordinary modern teaching, only quoted from authors of position and authority to explain my objections. The quotations are, perhaps, rather full, but I do not think it is fair to take a sentence out of a paragraph and remove it from the context. Book excerpt: Title Page Inscription: "Next to being right in this world, the best of all things is to be clearly and definitely wrong, because you will come out somewhere. If you go buzzing about between right and wrong, vibrating and fluctuating, you come out nowhere; but if you are absolutely and thoroughly and persistently wrong, you must, some of these days, have the extreme good fortune of knocking your head against a fact, and that sets you all straight again." —Huxley * * * * * An excerpt from the PREFACE : This little book has no pretensions to being a treatise on hydrodynamics. It is, as its title implies, only intended as an introduction to the study of that subject. There is not very much that is new in it; some of the quotations are so old that they have been forgotten, and so will appear to the reader of the ordinary text-books as if they were new. What is, I fancy, original is the way in which the matter is arranged and the subject presented. Instead of treating of the movement of a "perfect liquid" and then informing the reader that ordinary liquids behave quite differently, I have endeavoured to show that perfect and imperfect (?) liquids follow exactly the same laws, and under similar conditions move in a similar manner. The difficulties are generally supposed to be very great. Sir John Herschel told us that "if there be one part of dynamic science more abstruse and unapproachable than another, it is the doctrine of propagation of motion in fluids, and especially in elastic fluids like the air, even where the amount and application of the original acting forces are known and calculable." These difficulties are, I think, very largely artificial ones. It is well to remember what Dubuat said more than a hundred years ago: "On risque souvent de se tromper, quand on applique aux fluides les lois du mouvement qui conviennent aux solides." I might even go further and say that, when thinking of liquids, what (to the untrained mind) appears "obvious" or "appeals to common sense " is very frequently wrong — more frequently, perhaps, than not. When the student has trained himself to "think in pressures" many difficulties will disappear.

Download or read book The Elements of Hydrostatics and Hydrodynamics Classic Reprint written by W. H. Miller and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Hydrostatics and Hydrodynamics Art. 1. A Fluid is a body which can be divided in any direction, and whose parts can be moved among one another by any assignable force. Elastic fluids are those whose dimensions are increased or diminished when the pressure upon them is diminished or increased. Non-elastic fluids are those whose dimensions are independent of the pressure. Water, mercury, and probably all other liquids, are in a small degree compressible. Their resistance however to compression is so great, that the conclusions obtained on the supposition of their being incompressible, are in most cases free from any sensible error. 2. Let DEF (fig. 1.) be a piston without weight exactly fitting an orifice in the plane ABC, which forms the side of a vessel containing fluid. It is manifest that the fluid can make no effort to move the piston in any other direction than that of a normal to its surface, the piston may therefore be kept at rest by a force applied at some point G in it, and acting in a direction HG perpendicular to DEF. A force equal and opposite to this is called the pressure of the fluid on DEF. 3. The pressure of a fluid at a given point is measured by the quantity p, pk being the pressure of the fluid on an indefinitely small area k contiguous to the given point. When the pressure of a fluid on a given surface is the same, wherever that surface is placed, p is the pressure on an unit of surface. When the pressure on a given surface, varies with the situation of the surface, p is the pressure which would be exerted on an unit of surface, if the pressure at each part of the unit of surface were equal to the pressure at the given point. Book An Elementary Treatise on Hydrodynamics and Sound Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Elementary Treatise on Hydrodynamics and Sound Classic Reprint written by A. Barnard Basset and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Hydrodynamics and Sound The treatise on Hydrodynamics, which I published in 1888, was intended for the use of those who are acquainted with the higher branches of mathematics, and its aim was to present to the reader as comprehensive an account of the whole subject as was possible. But although a somewhat formidable battery of mathematical artillery is indispensable to those who desire to possess an exhaustive knowledge of any branch of mathematical physics, yet there are a variety of interesting and important investigations, not only in Hydrodynamics but also in Electricity and other physical subjects, which are well within the reach of every one, who possesses a knowledge of the elements of the Differential and Integral Calculus and the fundamental principles of Dynamics. I have accordingly, in the present work, abstained from introducing any of the more advanced methods of analysis, such as Spherical Harmonics, Elliptic Functions and the like; and, as regards the dynamical portion of the subject, I have endeavoured to solve the various problems which present themselves, by the aid of the Principles of Energy and Momentum, and have avoided the use of Lagrange's equations. Book Elementary Classical Hydrodynamics

Download or read book Elementary Classical Hydrodynamics written by B. H. Chirgwin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elementary Classical Hydrodynamics deals with the fundamental principles of elementary classical hydrodynamics, with emphasis on the mechanics of inviscid fluids. Topics covered by this book include direct use of the equations of hydrodynamics, potential flows, two-dimensional fluid motion, waves in liquids, and compressible flows. Some general theorems such as Bernoulli's equation are also considered. This book is comprised of six chapters and begins by introducing the reader to the fundamental principles of fluid hydrodynamics, with emphasis on ways of studying the motion of a fluid. Basic concepts and quantities such as viscosity, density, and pressure, are considered, along with hydrostatics and the equation of motion. The discussion then turns to Bernoulli's equation, the motion of a small element of fluid, velocity potential, and the kinetic energy of a uniform incompressible fluid. The chapters that follow explore two-dimensional fluid motion; a uniform inviscid, incompressible liquid having a free surface and upon which the only body force acting is uniform gravity; and a compressible gas with undisturbed uniform pressure and density, paying particular attention to the propagation and reflection of sound waves. This book is intended as an elementary introduction to the mechanics of inviscid fluids for first and second year undergraduates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reissue of the classic 1932 edition of Lamb's Hydrodynamics is an indication of the lasting value of the work. Constantly in use since its first publication in 1892, this book is the definitive reference work for all fluid dynamicists. The new foreword by Professor R. Caflisch highlights the prominence of this treatise in the field and outlines the development of fluid mechanics that led to its publication. He also resolves possible conflicts with modern notation. Despite the rapid pace of research in modern fluid mechanics study and the advent of high-speed computers, Lamb's work remains a relevant, timeless classic.

Download or read book A Treatise on Hydrostatics and Hydrodynamics written by Henry Moseley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Hydrostatics and Hydrodynamics: For the Use of Students in the University In a Treatise intended for the purposes of Academical instruction it is of the first importance that the more elementary propositions should be laid down, reference being had only to the simplest and most obvious methods of investigation. The attainment of this object has in the following work been found in some degree incompatible with a strictly scientific arrangement of its parts. The discussion of the general equations of Equilibrium evidently forms the legitimate basis of a theory of Hydro-statics. This discussion involves however the consideration of a point in space referred to three rectangular co-ordinates, and is, in its most general form, by no means essential to a further progress in the subject: it has therefore been referred to the end of the work, and that particular case of it in which the accelerating force is gravity, considered alone. In the theory of the motion of fluids, a distinction has been made between the case in which the velocity of every particle is the same as it passes through the same point in space; and the more extended case of variable motion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydrodynamics This book may be regarded as a second edition of a "Treatise on the Mathematical Theory of the Motion of Fluids," published in 1879, but the additions and alterations are so extensive that it has been thought proper to make a change in the title. I have attempted to frame a connected account of the principal theorems and methods of the science, and of such of the more important applications as admit of being presented within a moderate compass. It is hoped that all investigations of fundamental importance will be found to have been given with sufficient detail, but in matters of secondary or illustrative interest I have often condensed the argument, or merely stated results, leaving the full working out to the reader. In making a selection of the subjects to be treated I have been guided by considerations of physical interest. Long analytical investigations, leading to results which cannot be interpreted, have as far as possible been avoided. Considerable but, it is hoped, not excessive space has been devoted to the theory of waves of various kinds, and to the subject of viscosity. On the other hand, some readers may be disappointed to find that the theory of isolated vortices is still given much in the form in which it was left by the earlier researches of von Helmholtz and Lord Kelvin, and that little reference is made to the subsequent investigations of J. J. Thomson, W. M. Hicks, and others, in this field. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Hydraulics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hydraulics Classic Reprint written by Horace W. King and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydraulics This book deals with the fundamental principles of hydraulics and their application in engineering practice. Though many formulas applicable to different types of problems are given, it has been the aim of the authors to bring out clearly and logically the underlying principles which form the basis of such formulas rather than to emphasize the importance of the formulas themselves. Our present knowledge of fluid friction has been derived largely through experimental investigation and this has resulted in the development of a large number of empirical formulas. Many of these formulas have necessarily been included but, in so far as possible, the base formulas to which empirical coefficients have been applied have been derived analytically from fundamental consideration of basic principles. The book is designed as a text for beginning courses in hydraulics and as a reference book for engineers who may be interested in the fundamental principles of the subject. Tables of coefficients are given which are sufficiently complete for classroom work, but the engineer in practice will need to supplement them with the results of his own experience and with data obtained from other published sources. Chapters I to VI inclusive and Chapter XI were written by Professor Wisler and Chapters VII to X inclusive were written by Professor King. Acknowldgement for material taken from many publications is made at the proper place in the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
