Book excerpt: O presente trabalho tem por objeto analisar o papel desempenhado pelo Ministério Público do Trabalho na defesa do meio ambiente laboral. Parte-se do estudo do direito fundamental do trabalhador a um meio ambiente do trabalho sadio, seguro e equilibrado. A temática do meio ambiente laboral é analisada a partir de uma visão humanista, concepção que permite promover a dignidade da pessoa humana e privilegiar uma efetiva proteção à saúde do trabalhador. Verifica-se que o conceito de meio ambiente do trabalho a ser adotado deve ser aquele mais amplo possível, de modo que compreenda toda e qualquer situação que envolva o trabalhador e seu local de trabalho. Percebe-se, também, que o Brasil possui um avançado texto constitucional e uma desenvolvida legislação infraconstitucional no que tange à medicina e segurança do trabalho, mas o reiterado descumprimento desta vasta legislação de proteção aos trabalhadores faz com que o Brasil continue no topo dos rankings mundiais sobre acidentes do trabalho. Torna-se necessário, então, uma atuação incisiva de todos os agentes responsáveis pela tutela do meio ambiente laboral, a fim de reverter tal situação, sendo que este estudo se concentra no papel desempenhado pelo Ministério Público do Trabalho nesta tutela. Após serem verificadas as principais características do órgão ministerial e suas formas de atuação judiciais e extrajudiciais, passa-se à análise das Coordenadorias Nacionais temáticas desenvolvidas no âmbito do Parquet laboral, especialmente a Coordenadoria Nacional de Defesa do Meio Ambiente do Trabalho. Em seguida, como objeto principal deste trabalho, desenvolve-se o estudo dos projetos criados pelas Coordenadorias Nacionais visando à proteção do meio ambiente do trabalho, destacando-se a importância que estes vêm desempenhando para uma efetiva concretização do direito fundamental máximo da dignidade da pessoa humana.
