The Ninth New York Infantry, also known as Hawkin's Zouaves, served admirably in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War. Best remembered for their gaudy Zouave uniforms, this regiment spearheaded the Federal Army's advance into the streets of the town of Sharpsburg, MD during the battle of Antietam, America's bloodiest day in history, September 17, 1862. The men of the Ninth New York Infantry advanced further than any other Federal regiment engaged that day.

Book The Ninth Regiment New York Volunteers Hawkins Zouaves

Download or read book The Ninth Regiment New York Volunteers Hawkins Zouaves written by Lieut. Matthew J. Graham and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ninth Regiment New York Volunteers (Hawkins Zouaves): Being a History of the Regiment and Veteran Association From 1860 to 1900 In the taking of Fort Sumter the rebels served their first notice upon the people of the loyal States of the coming of one of the most momentous events known to the history of any nation, and when two days later President Lincoln called for the levy of seventy-five thousand troops, it was like giving an order by the president of a great railway company to the maker of toy engines, for a like number of mogul locomotives. The call of the President found the Governors of States about as well prepared to fill his order as would have been the makers of the toys. The patriotic uprising, however, was complete. Millions of heads, hearts and hands were willing to do and to serve, but the great "how to" had to be learned, and there were but few teachers to show the way. There were thousands of well disposed, perfectly inexperienced patriots who honestly believed that the matter of making a good fighting machine out of a thousand perfectly raw recruits would be an easy one. Powell covered the roads toward Front Royal and Sheridan's headquarters were at the Belle Grove House on the west of the pike and in rear of the Nineteenth corps. It was Sheridan's intention to attack the enemy as soon as the Sixth corps arrived but finding Early had moved back to Fisher's Hill, Sheridan concluded to wait till his return from Washington where he had been invited by the Secretary of War for Consultation. Oct. 15 the cavalry corps drew a large supply of feed, rations and ammunition and late that afternoon accompanied Sheridan to Front Royal with the intention of making a raid to Charlottesville while Sheridan went on to Washington. That night Sheridan received a despatch from Gen. Wright indicating that Early was being reinforced by Longstreet. This information was given to Gen. Wright through his signal corps. Torbert was now ordered back to Cedar Creek with all the cavalry but one regiment which escorted Sheridan to Rectortown where he took the cars for Washington. The corps left Front Royal at daylight Sunday morning, Oct. 16, and returned to its position on the right of the infantry line at Cedar Creek. Oct. 17 picket firing at 3 a. m. caused the cavalry to saddle up, but they did not leave camp and unsaddled again at 8 a. m. The political campaign in the Northern states was not lost sight of during these exciting military operations, on the other hand the men in the field felt a deep interest in the political situation. Abraham Lincoln had been renominated for President and Hon. Reuben E. Fenton had been nominated for governor of New York. Mr. Fenton had been the most conspicuous member of Congress in his personal interest in the welfare of Union soldiers and the 9th N. Y. cavalry had especial reason for...
