Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1942 -- the mention of it still evokes images of our once-proud fleet sinking into Pearl Harbor's watery graveyard, and Nazis goose-stepping through the Arc de Triomphe. Leon Weckstein had just turned 21 and figured he'd be drafted. After being rejected by the Navy for poor eyesight, he found himself drafted into the 91st Infantry Division. He became dependent on his vision for survival as he led his platoon through dangerously crucial assignments -- including a direct order to level the Tower of Pisa. From his forward observation post, he held the Tower's fate in his hands...

Download or read book The Story of the 91st Division Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the 91st Division The 91st Division has been singularly fortunate. It was among the first to be formed in America; it was sent to France in time to be one of the units composing the First American Army, and, as such, was held in reserve at Saint-Mihiel and took part in the battle of the Meuse-Argonne. While with the Group of Armies in Flanders it participated in the Ypres-Lys offensive; the armistice found the Division still in the front line approaching Brussels. There were many fine divisions which never had the opportunity of getting into action. It is the realization of this that makes us appreciate the good fortune that was ours. We hope that we can justly feel that we gave all and the best that was in us, while we appreciate that troops which served in the Service of Supply contributed as much to the success of the American Expeditionary Forces as did the troops in the Zone of the Advance. Book 91st Infantry In World War I Analysis Of An AEF Division s Efforts To Achieve Battlefield Success Illustrated Edition

Download or read book 91st Infantry In World War I Analysis Of An AEF Division s Efforts To Achieve Battlefield Success Illustrated Edition written by Major Bryan L. Woodcock and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes The Americans in the First World War Illustration Pack - 57 photos/illustrations and 10 maps The 91st Infantry Division was a National Army Division created prior to World War I. Based at Camp Lewis, Washington, it was composed of draftees from the northwestern United States. Following a train up that lasted less than one year, this division departed for Europe in June 1918. In France, the 91st Division conducted additional training, but the AEF pushed it to the front lines before it was completed. In its first combat experience, the 91st Division fought on the front lines of the Meuse-Argonne. In the first days of this battle, the 91st Division, although inexperienced, gained more ground than any other American division. However, it paid a heavy price in terms of American lives. The AEF subsequently assigned the division to work under French command in the battle of Ypres-Lys in Belgium. This thesis examines the division leadership’s ability to execute necessary warfighting functions and combined arms operations in the challenging environment of 1917-1918. The division was tested and accomplished a significant amount, but it also suffered many deficiencies and was forced to learn hard lessons in combat.
