Book excerpt: Common Sense was published anonymously on January 10, 1776, at the beginning of the American Revolution, and became an immediate sensation. Written in clear and persuasive prose, Thomas Paine marshaled moral and political arguments to encourage common people in the Colonies to fight for egalitarian government. It. Common Sense made public a persuasive and impassioned case for independence, which before the pamphlet had not yet been given serious intellectual consideration. He connected independence with common dissenting Protestant beliefs as a means to present a distinctly American political identity, structuring Common Sense as if it were a sermon. Historian Gordon S. Wood described Common Sense as "the most incendiary and popular pamphlet of the entire revolutionary era"._x000D_ Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was an English-American political activist, philosopher, political theorist, and revolutionary. One of the Founding Fathers of the United States, he authored the two most influential pamphlets at the start of the American Revolution, and he inspired the rebels in 1776 to declare independence from Britain. Paine's ideas reflected Enlightenment-era rhetoric of transnational human rights._x000D_

Book The American Crisis

Book excerpt: The American Crisis is a pamphlet series by the Enlightenment philosopher Thomas Paine, written during the American Revolution. Paine wrote these pamphlets in order to motivate people in the Colonies to join the war for independence from Britain. The pamphlets were contemporaneous with early parts of the American Revolution, during a time when colonists needed inspiring works. Paine, like many other politicians and scholars, knew that the Colonists weren't going to support the American Revolutionary War without proper reason to do so. They were written in a language that the common man could understand, and represented Paine's liberal philosophy. Paine also used references to God, saying that a war against Kingdom of Great Britain would be a war with the support of God. Paine's writings bolstered the morale of the American colonists, appealed to the English people's consideration of the war with America, clarified the issues at stake in the war, and denounced the advocates of a negotiated peace. Often known as simply The Crisis, there are sixteen pamphlets in total which Paine signed with the pseudonym, "Common Sense." Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was an English-American political activist, philosopher, political theorist, and revolutionary. One of the Founding Fathers of the United States, he authored the two most influential pamphlets at the start of the American Revolution, and he inspired the rebels in 1776 to declare independence from Britain. Paine's ideas reflected Enlightenment-era rhetoric of transnational human rights.

Book excerpt: September Mourning is a memorial picture book and portfolio of over fifty never before published photographs of the World Trade Center and September 11th memorials. The photos, most of which were taken from the vantage point of New Jersey, were shot by award-winning, New Jersey based photographer Dave Rossi, and are combined with details and reflections of the iconic buildings. The book begins with scenic images taken in the 1970s of the distant towers from West Orange, NJ. The pictorial continues with several award-winning images Dave shot over the years including a 1980 aerial photograph of the new Twin Towers before any of the other World Trade Center buildings were erected and the last photograph he took of the still-standing World Trade Center Towers in September 2001, from Hoboken, NJ. The book centers on a surreal two-page panoramic photograph of the downed buildings engulfed in smoke on September 11, 2001, which was shot from just across the Hudson River in Jersey City, NJ, and includes a timeline of the events of the morning leading up to the tragedy. September Mourning progresses through multiple photographs of the ?Tribute in Light? memorial light displays, the new One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower) under construction and a cross section of memorials in New Jersey. Pictured memorials include a city memorial park in Westfield; county memorials in West Orange (Essex), Springfield / Mountainside (Union); and the New Jersey State September 11 Memorial ?Empty Sky? just across the Hudson River from Ground Zero in Jersey City, New Jersey. Through the memorials in this book a story is told of bravery, loss, and remembrance of September 11, 2001. A day that affects every American. September Mourning? will make a valued keepsake and historical rated ?G? artistic photo reference to pass on to future generations. It pays tribute to those who lost their lives, their families, and to the courageous Firefighters, Police Officers, EMTs, Civilians, and other Rescue Workers who worked so hard and laid down their lives not only doing their duty but also for the love of their fellow man.

Book 9 11 and the Visual Culture of Disaster

Download or read book 9 11 and the Visual Culture of Disaster written by Thomas Stubblefield and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-17 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[An] insightful view on how 9/11 is perceived in American society—the day that ‘refuses to enter history,’ the tragedy that ‘has, in effect, not yet passed.’” —Journal of Popular Culture The day the towers fell, indelible images of plummeting rubble, fire, and falling bodies were imprinted in the memories of people around the world. Images that were caught in the media loop after the disaster and coverage of the attack, its aftermath, and the wars that followed reflected a pervasive tendency to treat these tragic events as spectacle. Though the collapse of the World Trade Center was “the most photographed disaster in history,” it failed to yield a single noteworthy image of carnage. Thomas Stubblefield argues that the absence within these spectacular images is the paradox of 9/11 visual culture, which foregrounds the visual experience as it obscures the event in absence, erasure, and invisibility. From the spectral presence of the Tribute in Light to Art Spiegelman’s nearly blank New Yorker cover, from the elimination of the Twin Towers from TV shows and films to the monumental cavities of Michael Arad’s 9/11 memorial, the void became the visual shorthand for the incident. By examining configurations of invisibility and erasure across the media of photography, film, monuments, graphic novels, and digital representation, Stubblefield interprets the post-9/11 presence of absence as the reaffirmation of national identity that implicitly laid the groundwork for the impending invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. “A concise, engaging, and thought-provoking work that asks the reader to reassess their knowledge and relationship to that moment and the resulting milieu of post 9/11 life in America.” —ARLIS/NA Reviews “Extraordinarily brilliant . . . will change how we think about disasters and tragedies. The book is a must-read for both students and practitioners of media studies.” —Repository

Book excerpt: Renowned photographer/police officer John Botte was given privileged access to ground zero in the hours and days following the tragedy of 9/11. Here for the first time–and for posterity–are his breathtaking photos, securing Botte's status as the Mathew Brady of 9/11. NYPD police officer and photographer John Botte was assigned by the police department to document the aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy. He spent countless hours at Ground Zero in the days and weeks after the attacks, and was given privileged access to the behind the scenes rescue and recovery efforts of 9/11. On a personal level, Botte calls Aftermath "a permanent tribute to the people who shaped me as a person and professional–to the friends I lost and the ones I never got a chance to make." On a universal level, his collection of photographs is a haunting reminder of the events of 9/11 in New York City and an important document for the ages. On the fifth anniversary of the attacks, the author will finally share his intimate portraits of the aftermath of America's unforgettable tragedy. With more than 150 haunting black & white photos and captions by the photographer himself, the book memorializes the unforgettable images we all recall from those first days–and captures countless scenes previously known only to the few who worked the scene so tirelessly. The result is an extraordinary historical record that stands to become the definitive photographic retrospective of September 11.

Book excerpt: From the editors of TIME, on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, comes an exclusive oral history of an extraordinary decade of sorrow and resilience. Accompanied by stunning black-and-white portraits by photographer Marco Grob, more than three dozen witnesses from Ground Zero to the White House to the mountains of Afghanistan give their accounts of what they saw and felt as the world changed, starting from the first moments of the attack on America through the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. "I just happen to be looking towards the Statue of Liberty. What I saw was a plane coming eye-level toward me, getting larger and larger. I can see the U on the tail," recalls Stanley Praimnath, one of just four survivors from the top floors of the World Trade Center. Vice President Dick Cheney recalls the earliest minutes of the war on terror, his immediate determination to "use all of the means available." President Bush remembers climbing on the wrecked fire engine at Ground Zero with a bullhorn in his hand and surveying the faces looking at him, knowing they were uncertain he'd be the leader they needed. TIME interviewed fire fighters and soldiers, widows and orphans, a general and an antiwar activist, to weave their stories of the 9/11 decade into an epic narrative of tragedy and transcendence. The photos and stories will be featured in TIME magazine as a special report commemorating 9/11 and will be the basis of an HBO documentary to premiere at the same time.
