Book excerpt: Anoxygenic Photosynthetic Bacteria is a comprehensive volume describing all aspects of non-oxygen-evolving photosynthetic bacteria. The 62 chapters are organized into themes of: Taxonomy, physiology and ecology; Molecular structure of pigments and cofactors; Membrane and cell wall structure: Antenna structure and function; Reaction center structure and electron/proton pathways; Cyclic electron transfer; Metabolic processes; Genetics; Regulation of gene expression, and applications. The chapters have all been written by leading experts and present in detail the current understanding of these versatile microorganisms. The book is intended for use by advanced undergraduate and graduate students and senior researchers in the areas of microbiology, genetics, biochemistry, biophysics and biotechnology.

Download or read book Photosynthetic Reaction Center written by Johann Deisenhofer and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The availability of the photosynthetic reaction center's structure at an atomic resolution of less than three angstroms has revolutionized research. This protein is the first integral membrane protein whose structure has been determined with such precision. Each volume of the Photosynthetic Reaction Center contains original research, methods, and reviews. Together, these volumes cover our current understanding of how photosynthesis converts light energy into stored chemical energy.Volume I describes the chemistry and biochemistry of photosynthesis, including green plant photosynthesis; it is devoted to the overall features and implications of the bacterial reaction center for green plant research. It features a new description of the structure of the reaction center, followed by coverage of the antenna and light functions. Volume I also details new manipulations of the reaction center including chemical and genetic modifications. It describes how the reaction center provides reducing power via electron transfer chemistry coupled to proton uptake and release; coupling of electron transport between the oxidized reaction center and the aqueous periplasm; and the general operation of membrane-bound proteins. Additionally, this volume contains five chapters detailing facets of green plant photosynthesis important for future research.

Download or read book Prokaryotic Structure and Function written by Society for General Microbiology. Symposium and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-02-20 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book evaluates the increasing wealth of knowledge that has accumulated concerning the regulation of synthesis and assembly of structural components of the bacterial cell. It is now possible in many cases to trace the exact sequence of events triggered by a change in the physical or chemical environment of a bacterial cell, for instance, signaling, gene expression, transport of the gene product to its correct location, and assembly into a functional structure. The scope of this volume is broad, ranging from the organization of the nuclear material itself to the sequence of events leading to differentiation and development; from the synthesis of intracellular storage material to the assembly of specialized photosynthetic membranes, periplasmic electron transfer chains, and heat-resistant spores.

Download or read book The Prokaryotes written by M.P. Starr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 1276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose ofthis brief Foreword is to make you, the reader, hungry for the scientific feast that follows. These two volumes on the prokary otes offer a truly unique scientific menu-a comprehensive assembly of articles, exhibiting the biochemical depth and remarkable physiological and morphological diversity of prokaryote life. The size of the volumes might initially discourage the unprepared mind from being attracted to the study of prokaryote life, for this landmark assemblage thoroughly documents the wealth of present knowledge. But in confronting the reader with the state of the art, the Handbook also defines where new work needs to be done on well-studied bacteria as well as on unusual or poorly studied organisms. There are basically two ways of doing research with microbes. A classical approach is first to define the phenomenon to be studied and then to select the organism accordingly. Another way is to choose a specific organism and go where it leads. The pursuit of an unusual microbe brings out the latent hunter in all of us. The intellectual chal lenges of the chase frequently test our ingenuity to the limit. Sometimes the quarry repeatedly escapes, but the final capture is indeed a wonder ful experience. For many of us, these simple rewards are sufficiently gratifying so that we have chosen to spend our scientific lives studying these unusual creatures.

Book excerpt: The Republic of Korea's industrial policy has directed that nation's economy through nearly three decades of spectacular growth. But the authors of this paper maintain that this policy is showing signs of being outmoded. The time has come, the authors argue, for the Korean government to stop managing the economy's structural development and to redefine the responsibilities of business and government. Under this proposed compact, the allocation of resources would shift from the government to the private industrial and financial sectors. The transformation of the government bureaucracy from an ad hoc policy role to one of a transparent and predictable regulator is a key to the success of this undertaking. These new directions would present the government with enormous challenges. Greater competitive discipline and regulatory oversight would be required. While dealing with the complexities of the transition, the government would have to maintain macroeconomic stability and the momentum of savings and investment. For comparison, the study examines the industrial economies of France, Germany, Japan, and the United States, which underwent similar shifts.

Download or read book Ultrastructural Plasticity of Cyanobacteria written by Olga I. Baulina and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-28 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an in-depth analysis of the cell biology of cyanobacteria, a group of phototrophic microorganisms performing an important function in the biosphere. The chapters present the author’s and her colleagues’ pioneering investigations of the ultrastructure of cyanobacteria under high-light and dark conditions, during irradiation by extremely high fluxes of light, in the course of L-transformation and within model associations and natural symbioses with plants. Diverse patterns of ultrastructural change are illustrated in electron micrographs and schematics. The book further introduces a new concept of “bacterial ultrastructural plasticity” - the reversible rearrangement of ultrastructure in response to environmental changes, as a strategy for finding and investigating cell adaptation mechanisms and intraspecies structural diversity of cyanobacteria and other prokaryotes. It serves as a valuable guide for teaching and research in the field of cell biology of microorganisms and plant-cyanobacteria symbioses.
