  • Author : Marsha C. Lovett
  • Publisher : Psychology Press
  • Release : 2012-08-21
  • ISBN : 1136679421
  • Pages : 488 pages

Download or read book Thinking With Data written by Marsha C. Lovett and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in Thinking With Data are based on presentations given at the 33rd Carnegie Symposium on Cognition. The Symposium was motivated by the confluence of three emerging trends: (1) the increasing need for people to think effectively with data at work, at school, and in everyday life, (2) the expanding technologies available to support people as they think with data, and (3) the growing scientific interest in understanding how people think with data. What is thinking with data? It is the set of cognitive processes used to identify, integrate, and communicate the information present in complex numerical, categorical, and graphical data. This book offers a multidisciplinary presentation of recent research on the topic. Contributors represent a variety of disciplines: cognitive and developmental psychology; math, science, and statistics education; and decision science. The methods applied in various chapters similarly reflect a scientific diversity, including qualitative and quantitative analysis, experimentation and classroom observation, computational modeling, and neuroimaging. Throughout the book, research results are presented in a way that connects with both learning theory and instructional application. The book is organized in three sections: Part I focuses on the concepts of uncertainty and variation and on how people understand these ideas in a variety of contexts. Part II focuses on how people work with data to understand its structure and draw conclusions from data either in terms of formal statistical analyses or informal assessments of evidence. Part III focuses on how people learn from data and how they use data to make decisions in daily and professional life.

Book Secularity and Non Religion

Download or read book Secularity and Non Religion written by Elisabeth Arweck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present collection brings together a set of essays which shed light on recent research into non-religion, secularity and atheism—topics which have been emerging as important areas of current research in a number of different disciplines. The essays cover a wide span—in terms of the various stances they discuss (secular, atheist, non-religious), the settings in which these topics are relevant (families, wider society, politics, demography) and the different perspectives which relate to socialisation and social relations (belief acquisition, discrimination). Written by authors from a variety of national settings and academic disciplines, the collection presents a range of methodologies, combining theoretical approaches with quantitative and qualitative research findings. The authors address issues related to an important academic field which had been neglected for some time, but which has been made relevant by the increasing percentage of people professing a non-religious stance. This collection represents a major contribution to this area of academic research, not only because it puts the themes of non-religion and secularity firmly on the academic map, but also because it offers a variety of different viewpoints and aims to bring clarity into the use of concepts and terminology. The authors make important contributions to the emerging body of research in this area and point out areas where further research is needed. The first essay provides a thorough introduction to this field, taking stock of the work done so far, highlighting the overarching issues, and embedding the essays in the wider context of existing literature. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Contemporary Religion.

Book Simultaneous Source Seismic Acquisition

Download or read book Simultaneous Source Seismic Acquisition written by Ray Abma and published by SEG Books. This book was released on 2020-12-31 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces simultaneous source technology and helps those who practice it succeed. Although the book does not include all developments, which would have entailed a much longer treatise, this work is written through the lens of decades of experiences and allows readers to understand the development of independent simultaneous sourcing. The relationships between data acquisition and data processing are discussed because never before have they been so intertwined as in this area. In addition to describing the underlying technologies, this book also is a user-guide which discusses survey design and acquisition and decribes the sensitivities of the processing algorithms which can allow simultaneous source technology to succeed. The audience for this book includes acquisition and processing geophysicists who will work with these data as well as those who require only an overview of the state of the art; and, even though they may not need the full technical details, they may want to know the limitations and advantages of using simultaneous sources.
