Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceived and published in recognition of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientist's 75th year of publication, Now, Then, and the Future consists of two distinct collections of distinguished articles that are meant to comment on one another. The opening section of the book focuses on 21st century challenges and asks a diverse cast of respected strategic thinkers and doers of the 21st century-including two Nobel Prize laureates-to look forward a decade or two, and to answer a general question: Where might the Bulletin and its readers most profitably focus their attention as they work to keep the Doomsday Clock from striking midnight? The book's latter portion of consists of republications of noteworthy pieces that appeared in the Bulletin over the last seven-and-a-half decades. This retrospective is not comprehensive could not possibly be, given the trove of famous authors and weighty subjects the magazine has ushered into print and pixels since 1945. Even so, this portion of the book includes major work by authors so acclaimed as to be easily identified by single names: Einstein, Oppenheimer, Gorbachev, Nixon, Kennedy. As is fitting for the prominence of its expert authors, Now, Then, and the Future begins with a foreword by one of the most influential public intellectuals of modern history, Noam Chomsky. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, founded in 1945, covers nuclear issues, climate change and disruptive technology. Our coverage of these issues is based on a driving belief that humans can successfully manage the technologies they create. The Bulletin is also the nonprofit behind the iconic Doomsday Clock. Notable contributors and figures featured in the Bulletin include Albert Einstein, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Ruth Adams, Stephen Hawking, Christine Todd Whitman, U.S. Secretary of Defense William J. Perry, and multiple Nobel laureates. The Bulletin was founded after World War II by Manhattan Project scientists who "could not remain aloof to the consequences of their work." Our mission is to equip the public, policymakers, and scientists with the information needed to reduce man-made threats to our existence.

Book excerpt: PULITZER PRIZE WINNER • NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The “remarkable” (Ken Burns), “utterly absorbing” (Forbes) Civil War classic that inspired the film Gettysburg, with more than three million copies in print “My favorite historical novel . . . a superb re-creation of the Battle of Gettysburg, but its real importance is its insight into what the war was about, and what it meant.”—James M. McPherson In the four most bloody and courageous days of our nation’s history, two armies fought for two conflicting dreams. One dreamed of freedom, the other of a way of life. Far more than rifles and bullets were carried into battle. There were memories. There were promises. There was love. And far more than men fell on those Pennsylvania fields. Bright futures, untested innocence, and pristine beauty were also the casualties of war. Michael Shaara’s Pulitzer Prize–winning masterpiece is unique, sweeping, unforgettable—the dramatic story of the battleground for America’s destiny.
Download or read book Walker Evans written by Walker Evans and published by . This book was released on 2006-09-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of the visual arts to show us our own moral and economic situation has today fallen almost completely into the hands of the photographer. It is for him to fix and to reveal the whole aspect of our society: to record for use in the future our disasters and our claims to divinity. Walker Evans, photographing in New England or Louisiana, watching a Cuban political funeral or a Mississippi flood, working cautiously so as to disturb nothing in the normal atmosphere of the average place, can be considered a kind of disembodied, burrowing eye, a conspirator against time and its hammers. His photographs are the records of contemporary civilization in eastern American.~In the reproductions presented here, two large divisions have been made. The photographs are arranged to be seen in their given sequence. In the first part, which might be labeled "People by Photography," we have an aspect of America for which it would be difficult to claim too much. The physiognomy of a nation is laid on your table. In the second part are pictures which refer to the continuous fact of an indigenous American expression, whatever its source, whatever form it has taken, whether in sculpture, paint, or architecture: that native accent we find again in Kentucky mountain and cowboy ballads and in contemporary swing-music. --from the jacket of the 1938 edition~More than any other artist, Walker Evans invented the image of essential America that we have long since accepted as fact. His work, presented in stark and prototypical form in American Photographs, has made its impact not only on photography but also on modern literature, film, and the traditional visual arts. First published in 1938 by The Museum of Modern Art, American Photographs has often been out of print. This edition uses duotone plates made for the 1988 edition from original prints, and makes Evans' landmark book available again. The design and typography have been recreated as precisely as possible.

Book excerpt: A sports-crazed kid from Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, Gary David Goldberg never imagined he’d end up in Hollywood, let alone make it big there. But as a twenty-five-year-old waiter in Greenwich Village he met Diana, the love of his life; followed her out to Northern California; then moved in and never moved out. He also, without realizing it, put himself on track to found UBU Productions (named after his beloved Labrador retriever) and become a successful creator of such family sitcoms as Family Ties, Brooklyn Bridge, and Spin City.* In Sit, Ubu, Sit, award-winning writer/producer Goldberg tells the mostly upbeat, sometimes difficult, and frequently hilarious tale of his improbable career and the people who have filled it. A love story and a rare behind-the-scenes look at the entertainment industry, Sit, Ubu, Sit proves that it is possible to be creative and successful while holding on to your integrity, your family, and your sense of humor. *with Bill Lawrence

Download or read book The Play Ethic written by Pat Kane and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2011-08-19 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Fizzes with intellectual curiosity. Kane writes engagingly and with a humility difficult to find among idea-entrepreneurs’ James Harkin, Independent We all think we know what play is. Play is what we do as children, what we do outside of work, what we do for no other reason than for pleasure. But this is only half of the truth. The Play Ethic explores the real meaning of play and shows how a more playful society would revolutionize and liberate our daily lives. Using wide and varied sources – from the Enlightenment to Eminem, Socrates to Chaos theory, Kierkegaard to Karaoke – The Play Ethic shows how play is fundamental to both society and to the individual, and how the work ethic that has dominated the last three centuries is ill-equipped to deal with the modern world. With verve, wit and intelligence, Pat Kane takes us on a tour of the playful world arguing that without it business, the arts, politics, education, even our family and spiritual lives are fundamentally impoverished. The Play Ethic seeks to change the way you look at your daily life, how you interact with others, how you view the world. It is a guidebook to new, exciting – and unsettling – times. Shocking, controversial, yet magnificently argued, The Play Ethic is a book no one who works, or has ever worked, can afford to be without. ‘Kane's Manifesto for a Different Way of Living is a brave attempt to inject a little playfulness . . . into the dull grind of the working stiff’ Iain Finlayson, The Times
