Book Donald Horne

Download or read book Donald Horne written by Ryan Cropp and published by La Trobe University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating biography of a brilliant man who captured the nation's imagination and boldly showed Australians who we were and how we could change In the 1960s, Donald Horne offered Australians a compelling reinterpretation of the Menzies years as a period of social and political inertia and mediocrity. His book The Lucky Country was profoundly influential and, without doubt, one of the most significant shots ever fired in Australia's endless culture war. Ryan Cropp's landmark biography positions Horne as an antipodean Orwell, a lively, independent and distinct literary voice 'searching for the temper of the people, accepting it, and moving on from there'. Through the eyes – and unforgettable words – of this preternaturally observant and articulate man, we see a recognisable modern Australia emerge. Shortlisted for the 2024 National Biography Award 'A compulsive read about a writer who shaped the way we Australians think about ourselves' —Judith Brett 'Unmissable for anybody interested in the intellectual life of this country' —Sean Kelly 'Ryan Cropp's thoughtful life of Donald Horne … charted the restless and provocative habits of his subject with care and elegance, and animated decades of faded news and current affairs with colour and poise.' —Patrick Mullins, Australian Book Review 'Books of the Year 2023' 'In his accomplished and insightful biography … Cropp has captured a full life, well lived, that was a tribute to the importance of paying attention and making a difference.' —Julianne Schultz, The Conversation

It is illustrated with over 800 photos of people, places, and events, and even everyday objects most of us no longer use. To assist readers unfamiliar with Manhattan, she has included maps, and to anchor local events to the nation and the world, there is a timeline. The book is thoroughly indexed. As such, it is a download of about large download of approximately 227 MB and will take much longer to download than a novel in flowing format that has no illustrations.

Book The Equivalents

Download or read book The Equivalents written by Maggie Doherty and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FINALIST FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD In 1960, Harvard’s sister college, Radcliffe, announced the founding of an Institute for Independent Study, a “messy experiment” in women’s education that offered paid fellowships to those with a PhD or “the equivalent” in artistic achievement. Five of the women who received fellowships—poets Anne Sexton and Maxine Kumin, painter Barbara Swan, sculptor Marianna Pineda, and writer Tillie Olsen—quickly formed deep bonds with one another that would inspire and sustain their most ambitious work. They called themselves “the Equivalents.” Drawing from notebooks, letters, recordings, journals, poetry, and prose, Maggie Doherty weaves a moving narrative of friendship and ambition, art and activism, love and heartbreak, and shows how the institute spoke to the condition of women on the cusp of liberation. “Rich and powerful. . . . A love story about art and female friendship.” —Harper’s Magazine “Reads like a novel, and an intense one at that. . . . The Equivalents is an observant, thoughtful and energetic account.” —Margaret Atwood, The Globe and Mail (Toronto)

Book From Tragedies to Happiness

Download or read book From Tragedies to Happiness written by Lori M. Radosny and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-02-28 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Tragedies to Happiness: My True Stories is a memoir of my life. I have been through five tragedies that I describe in the book-they are being molested as a child, suffering from deep depression, a suicide attempt, deaths of my parents and brother, Walt, and bankruptcy. I was thinking one day, that I have been through a lot of tragedies in my life, and I am still a happy person today. I wrote the book to let people know that even though they go through one or more tragedies in their life, they can move forward and lead a happy life, as I have. If another tragedy strikes, take care of it the best way you know how and again move forward. I discuss in detail each tragedy. I also have included two-line rhymes regarding the health-care field. I wrote about seventy of them in three days. They just kept coming to me. I also parody some songs that I have adapted to include the health-care field. I have as Chapter 1, the love story of myself and Dave Herzig. We have been together for twenty-five years after meeting in a summer Friday night bowling league in 1989, and we are more in love today than when we first fell in love with each other in 1989. I found a man who loves me when I thought nobody ever would. I made Dave wait 167 days until our first "romantic session." He could have left, but he waited for me. He didn't know why I wanted to wait. I needed to know that I could trust him first. He didn't know about my molestation when I was nine years old. I feel the book will help others, and that is why I wrote it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Wisconsin governor from 1971 to 1977, Patrick J. Lucey pursued an ambitious progressive agenda, tempered by the concerns of a fiscal conservative and a pragmatic realist. He was known for bridging partisan divides, building coalitions, and keeping politics civil. His legacy, which included merging Wisconsin’s universities into one system and equalizing the funding formula for public schools, continues to impact Wisconsin residents and communities. Preceding his service as governor, Lucey played a key role in rebuilding the Democratic Party in Wisconsin, returning a state that had been dominated by Republicans to a more moderate two-party system. As party chairman, he built coalitions between World War II veterans, remnants of the defunct Progressive Party, urban socialists, and activists in rural communities throughout the state. Through exclusive interviews and unprecedented access to archival materials, Dennis L. Dresang shares the story of this pivotal figure in Wisconsin history, from his small-town rural roots to his wide-ranging influence.

Book The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

Download or read book The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie written by Muriel Spark and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2012-03-20 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A perfect book”—and basis for the Maggie Smith film—about a teacher who makes a lasting impression on her female students in the years before World War II (Chicago Tribune). “Give me a girl at an impressionable age, and she is mine for life!” So asserts Jean Brodie, a magnetic, dubious, and sometimes comic teacher at the conservative Marcia Blaine School for Girls in Edinburgh. Brodie selects six favorite pupils to mold—and she doesn’t stop with just their intellectual lives. She has a plan for them all, including how they will live, whom they will love, and what sacrifices they will make to uphold her ideals. When the girls reach adulthood and begin to find their own destinies, Jean Brodie’s indelible imprint is a gift to some, and a curse to others. The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is Spark’s masterpiece, a novel that offers one of twentieth-century English literature’s most iconic and complex characters—a woman at once admirable and sinister, benevolent and conniving. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Muriel Spark including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the author’s archive at the National Library of Scotland.

Book Ingmar Bergman

Download or read book Ingmar Bergman written by Birgitta Steene and published by Hall Reference Books. This book was released on 1987 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The films of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman are renowned for their largely spare and stark aesthetic, an existential framework, and plots driven by a fascination with death and the moral torments of the human soul. Birgitta Steene offers here in "Ingmar Bergman: A Reference Guide" an essential and unparalleled resource on the life and work of Bergman. Plumbing the depths of these trademark Bergman themes, Steene traces as well the indelible mark he left on world cinema through his other cinematographic work and writings. Over the decades, Bergman's stature and image have evolved in fascinating ways-- an iconoclast of the 1950s, a bourgeois traditionalist of the 1960s, and an icon in the 1980s. This exhaustive compendium considers each phase of his career, exploring his deep and vast oeuvre in all its controversy and complexity, and analyzes his intriguing and unique motifs such as his efforts to expose dead conventions and his portrayals of Woman as the archetype of humanity. As well as providing a detailed account of Bergman's life and chronicling his career as a filmmaker and theater director, including his work for television, Steene offers transcripts of some of the numerous interviews and conversations she conducted with Bergman. Writings by and about Bergman and a detailed chronological survey of his film and theatrical work completes this eminently readable and thoroughly researched volume. A wide-ranging and groundbreaking work of film history, "Ingmar Bergman" is the definitive reference for scholars of the Scandinavian master.
