Book excerpt: This is one Bible study you wont want to miss. It shows when the Crucifixion really occurred, and how to confirm that from the Old Testament alone. Fresh insights reveal previously unrecognized parallels between the Crucifixion and modern history that illustrate how the Crucifixion timeline is a key to understanding end times prophecy. Recognizing our place in the procession of last day events will enable those who already know the Lord as their savior to become more efficient in their Christian service. Twelve previously unrecognized patterns illustrate where we are in that schedule of last day events. Even if you disagree with the positions presented, these are issues you need to have answers for.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping chronicle of Jewish life in the Tar Heel State from colonial times to the present, this beautifully illustrated volume incorporates oral histories, original historical documents, and profiles of fascinating individuals. The first comprehensive social history of its kind, Down Home demonstrates that the story of North Carolina Jews is attuned to the national story of immigrant acculturation but has a southern twist. Keeping in mind the larger southern, American, and Jewish contexts, Leonard Rogoff considers how the North Carolina Jewish experience differs from that of Jews in other southern states. He explores how Jews very often settled in North Carolina's small towns, rather than in its large cities, and he documents the reach and vitality of Jewish North Carolinians' participation in building the New South and the Sunbelt. Many North Carolina Jews were among those at the forefront of a changing South, Rogoff argues, and their experiences challenge stereotypes of a society that was agrarian and Protestant. More than 125 historic and contemporary photographs complement Rogoff's engaging epic, providing a visual panorama of Jewish social, cultural, economic, and religious life in North Carolina. This volume is a treasure to share and to keep. Published in association with the Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina, Down Home is part of a larger documentary project of the same name that will include a film and a traveling museum exhibition, to be launched in June 2010.

Book Paths to the Middle East

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas Naff
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 2012-02-01
  • ISBN : 1438414056
  • Pages : 382 pages

Download or read book Paths to the Middle East written by Thomas Naff and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of Middle East studies is undergoing a generational change in academia, government, and the corporate community. The men and women who trained the present generation of scholars and who shaped government and corporate policies toward the Middle East after World War II have begun to retire, and unfortunately some have recently died. To preserve their insights into the past and their visions of the future, Thomas Naff asked a number of major Islamic and Middle East scholars to provide their perspectives and views in a short, personal summation of their careers. This book is a compilation of their responses. It provides a unique evaluation of the last 30 or 40 years by ten of the most distinguished pioneers representing key branches of the field. Pierre Cachia, Albert Hourani, J.C. Hurewitz, Halil Inalcik, Charles Issawi, Ernest McCarus, George Makdisi, Don Peretz, Dankwart A. Rustow, and Farhat J. Ziadeh have provided their perspectives on the past and present, their visions of future paths to be explored, and their wisdom drawn from decades of experience and scholarship. Whatever didacticism is offered in this book is not formal. Lessons, insights, wisdom, and inspiration are almost invisibly woven into the fabric of fascinating biographical narrative told with wit, style, self-effacement, and candor.

Book Abba Hillel Silver

Download or read book Abba Hillel Silver written by Marc Lee Raphael and published by Holmes & Meier Publishers. This book was released on 1989 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silver's writings and activities had a profound influence on American life, both religious and secular. Like William James, he believed the business of religion was to unlock people's inner resources. "Judaism's central and unique property" he wrote, "is the power to release faith and courage for living, to produce spiritual vitality and fruitfulness, and by that that it ultimately stands or falls." For Silver, this power functioned two ways-as a support during crises and as a stimulus to high endeavours. This, of course, raises the question of whether religion is purely psychology or also philosophy, whether it can distance itself from the supernatural and remain, in fact, religion. Raphael deals with these questions in this challenging and provocative study.

Book Arabic Linguistic Thought and Dialectology

Download or read book Arabic Linguistic Thought and Dialectology written by Aryeh Levin and published by JSAI. This book was released on 1998 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles collected in this volume form a contribution to the study of Arabic linguistics. Most of them deal with Arabic medieval grammatical thought and terminology and are based on the oldest grammatical treatises known to us, especially Sibawayhi's al-Kitab. The study of these two topics is interrelated, since the understanding of Arabic grammatical thought depends on the understanding of its terminology and vice versa. During the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries, some prominent scholars maintained that the linguistic data supplied by the early Arab grammarians are unreliable, and, as a result, their grammatical rules do not accord with the linguistic reality of Old Arabic. Professor Levin's studies concerning the history of Arabic language contribute to the refutation of this view, showing that Sibawayhi's linguistic method was mainly descriptive and that the linguistic information furnished by him is authentic and reliable. Professor Levin also shows that Sibawayhi's accurate description of Old Arabic is based primarily on the ordinary speech of certain Bedouin tribes who lived in Southern Iraq in the eighth century. The linguistic data found in the Ketab indicate that these Bedouins still spoke Old Arabic dialects. Aryeh Levin is Professor of Arabic at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is also the author of "A Grammar of the Arabic Dialect of Jerusalem" (in Hebrew).
