Book The Mounds of the Mississippi Valley

Download or read book The Mounds of the Mississippi Valley written by Lucien Carr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mounds of the Mississippi Valley: Historically Considered TN a papef upon the Prehistoric Remains of Kentucky, published in the first volume iof these Memoirs, I have expressed the opinion that it was impossible to distinguish between a series of stone implements taken from the mounds in the Mississippi Valley, and a similar series made and used by the modern Indians. In fact, so alike are these objects in conception and execution, that any attempt to distinguish them, based' upon form or finish, must be but the merest guesswork. From the rude knife to the carved and polished gorget, they may, one and all, have been taken from the inmost recesses of a mound, or picked up on the surface amid the débris of a recent Indian Village; and the most experienced archaeologist, if called upon to decide as to their origin, would have to acknowledge himself at N or does this similarity step with objects made of stone. On°the contrary, it is believed to extend to all the articles, of every kind whatso ever, that have thus far been taken from the mounds. Indeed, I might even go farther, and as the result of some years of work, as well in the field as in the library, venture the assertion that not only has there not, as yet, been anything taken from the mounds indicating a higher stage of develop ment than the red Indian of the United States is known to have reached, but that even the mounds themselves, and under this head are included all the earth-works of the Mississippi Valley, were quite within the limits of his efforts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Mississippi: For Use in Schools Maps are as necessary to a history as to a geography, and in the history of Mississippi they are' especially important. It is impossible for a stu dent to form a correct idea of what Mississippi was when a part of Brit ish Florida, or when it was first organized as a Territory, or even when it was first admitted as a State, except with the aid of a map. It is recommended that pupils be required to reproduce each map, drawing it from memory, and that teachers ask such map questions as will thor oughly impress the geography of that particular time. Book A Short History of the Mississippi Valley Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of the Mississippi Valley Classic Reprint written by James K. Hosmer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Mississippi Valley The centenary of the Louisiana purchase, now close at hand, about to be commemorated by the St. Louis Exposition, is turning the thoughts of men to the region in which lies the heart of the Union. At the present moment, too, the Mississippi Valley is about to become, so to speak, politically complete. Oklahoma possesses every requisite for statehood and will, so says report, probably with the Indian Territory make application for admission as a State at the next session of Congress. Should the application be granted, the last unorganized fragment of the area of the Mississippi Valley will receive a formal constitution. Such an event marks an epoch. In view of these circumstances, it is hoped that this little book may seem timely and prove useful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Mississippi Valley and Prehistoric Events

Download or read book The Mississippi Valley and Prehistoric Events written by C. B. Walker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mississippi Valley, and Prehistoric Events: Giving an Account of the Original Formation and Early Condition of the Great Valley; Of Its Vegetable and Animal Life; Of Its First Inhabitants, the Mound Builders, Its Mineral Treasures and Agricultural Develpoements The object of this book is to supply the means of acquiring a clear idea of the Origin, Extent, Resources, and Development of the Mississippi Valley. No work before the public embraces this information. Can a subject apparently so familiar in its general features as the development of the Valley of the Mississippi be clothed with fresh interest? A brilliant and durable prosperity must have an extraordinary cause; and a region that has reacted with such happy effect on the character and destinies of a great nation must be worthy of close study. That study will show that the Valley is only beginning to make itself felt in the country and the world, that its natural advantages are wholly unequaled by any section of the globe, and that its People and Institutions are equally superior. Scientific studies on its original formation have been principally confined to learned books. Presented in a condensed and popular form, they will be found of fascinating interest; while a complete view of its surface features, its vast area, its variety of climate and soil, its agricultural and mineral resources, its rivers, lakes, and plains, and wide expanding rim, with the peculiar course and significance of its human history, show it to be the grandest and most desirable region in the world. It is to be a mighty element in a wonderful Future. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book When Abortion Was a Crime

  • Author : Leslie J. Reagan
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2022-02-22
  • ISBN : 0520387422
  • Pages : 433 pages

Download or read book When Abortion Was a Crime written by Leslie J. Reagan and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive history of abortion in the United States, with a new preface that equips readers for what’s to come. When Abortion Was a Crime is the must-read book on abortion history. Originally published ahead of the thirtieth anniversary of Roe v. Wade, this award-winning study was the first to examine the entire period during which abortion was illegal in the United States, beginning in the mid-nineteenth century and ending with that monumental case in 1973. When Abortion Was a Crime is filled with intimate stories and nuanced analysis, demonstrating how abortion was criminalized and policed—and how millions of women sought abortions regardless of the law. With this edition, Leslie J. Reagan provides a new preface that addresses the dangerous and ongoing threats to abortion access across the country, and the precarity of our current moment. While abortions have typically been portrayed as grim "back alley" operations, this deeply researched history confirms that many abortion providers—including physicians—practiced openly and safely, despite prohibitions by the state and the American Medical Association. Women could find cooperative and reliable practitioners; but prosecution, public humiliation, loss of privacy, and inferior medical care were a constant threat. Reagan's analysis of previously untapped sources, including inquest records and trial transcripts, shows the fragility of patient rights and raises provocative questions about the relationship between medicine and law. With the right to abortion increasingly under attack, this book remains the definitive history of abortion in the United States, offering vital lessons for every American concerned with health care, civil liberties, and personal and sexual freedom.
