"Oh Lord," she thought, "Please don't see me as being ungrateful. Truly, I am blessed beyond words by all that You have done in my life, in the life of my family, by what You have given me, and so much more. But, why do I feel like I've missed things and I need to have something to show as I approach this milestone?" After weeks of turmoil, Alethia came to the realization that 50 was like her other birthdays: a blessing, not the kiss of death. She had a celebration to commemorate the milestone and created a bookmark, highlighting fifty life lessons that she had learned over her lifetime. The bookmark was a huge hit and was the topic of numerous conversations the entire evening of the celebration! To her surprise, in the days that followed she was told by friends and family that her lessons inspired them as they approached their milestones. She also noted that the bookmark gave many a good chuckle, and prompted others to encourage her to turn the lessons into a book. 50 plus years later, the book is finally complete. 50 Things I Learned on my Way to 50, displays the author's gift for finding revelation in everyday life. Her revelations-turned-life lessons will resonate with many. From the stories that stir powerful emotions to the ones that make you laugh, one thing that's guaranteed is that you will see aging differently after reading this book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through experiences and anecdotes, I have compiled a list of some important lessons that I have attained through my journey to the ripe old age of fifty. Even though this is personal to me and my journey, everyone will identify with more than half of what this book has to offer. The rest will offer more questions about the readers own personal journey. Generation X, also known as the latchkey generation because we were the first generation to come home from school to an empty house because of the change in economy, culture, and family structure. In doing so, we were able to navigate one of the most culturally significant decades of the 20th Century; the 80's. The decade that brought Hip Hop into its infancy and helped mold the culture in young Black America. Why write this book? In order to heal, we have to realize that there is a wound. PTSD from our own environment is extremely common. 50 Things I learned at 50, helps to decipher those patterns and allows the reader to understand that they are not alone in the way life issues are handled.

Book Things You Learn Along the Way

Download or read book Things You Learn Along the Way written by John Menadue and published by PEARLS & IRRITATIONS P/L. This book was released on 2024-07-23 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I changed a lot over sixty years, but I never lost the dissenter tradition that I learned in my first fifteen years in the Methodist manse. I worked for Rupert Murdoch and saw how seductive power is. Later, as head of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet in Canberra, I had the bizarre experience of working for Gough Whitlam in the morning of 11 November 1975 and, in the afternoon, for Malcolm Fraser after John Kerr dismissed the Whitlam Government. The anger of what happened on that fateful day is still with me. Working with Malcolm Fraser, however, proved liberating. I realised that while being an outsider was uncomfortable, it was manageable. It was as Australian Ambassador in Japan in the late 1970s that I learned most about Australia and myself. As head of the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs ( 1981-83 ), I had the most job of my life, being involved in nation-building and playing my part in ending White Australia. As CEO at Qantas ( 1986-89 ), I experienced the difficulties of dealing with a board and a Government with agendas that weren't the same as mine - and the pressure to conform. All institutions, like people, are in need of radical daily reform. Without dissenters, institutions die. In that respect I became more radical as I grew older. I now believe that the one thing above all else I've learned is that we need relationships and community if our lives are to be complete.

Download or read book The First 20 Hours written by Josh Kaufman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-06-13 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forget the 10,000 hour rule— what if it’s possible to learn the basics of any new skill in 20 hours or less? Take a moment to consider how many things you want to learn to do. What’s on your list? What’s holding you back from getting started? Are you worried about the time and effort it takes to acquire new skills—time you don’t have and effort you can’t spare? Research suggests it takes 10,000 hours to develop a new skill. In this nonstop world when will you ever find that much time and energy? To make matters worse, the early hours of practicing something new are always the most frustrating. That’s why it’s difficult to learn how to speak a new language, play an instrument, hit a golf ball, or shoot great photos. It’s so much easier to watch TV or surf the web . . . In The First 20 Hours, Josh Kaufman offers a systematic approach to rapid skill acquisition— how to learn any new skill as quickly as possible. His method shows you how to deconstruct complex skills, maximize productive practice, and remove common learning barriers. By completing just 20 hours of focused, deliberate practice you’ll go from knowing absolutely nothing to performing noticeably well. Kaufman personally field-tested the methods in this book. You’ll have a front row seat as he develops a personal yoga practice, writes his own web-based computer programs, teaches himself to touch type on a nonstandard keyboard, explores the oldest and most complex board game in history, picks up the ukulele, and learns how to windsurf. Here are a few of the simple techniques he teaches: Define your target performance level: Figure out what your desired level of skill looks like, what you’re trying to achieve, and what you’ll be able to do when you’re done. The more specific, the better. Deconstruct the skill: Most of the things we think of as skills are actually bundles of smaller subskills. If you break down the subcomponents, it’s easier to figure out which ones are most important and practice those first. Eliminate barriers to practice: Removing common distractions and unnecessary effort makes it much easier to sit down and focus on deliberate practice. Create fast feedback loops: Getting accurate, real-time information about how well you’re performing during practice makes it much easier to improve. Whether you want to paint a portrait, launch a start-up, fly an airplane, or juggle flaming chainsaws, The First 20 Hours will help you pick up the basics of any skill in record time . . . and have more fun along the way.

Book Leading the Life You Want

Download or read book Leading the Life You Want written by Stewart Friedman and published by Harvard Business Review Press. This book was released on 2014-09-16 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Wall Street Journal Bestseller “For nearly thirty years, my life’s work has been to help people like you find ways to bring the often warring aspects of life into greater harmony.” — Stew Friedman, from Leading the Life You Want You’re busy trying to lead a “full” life. But does it really feel full—or are you stretched too thin? Enter Stew Friedman, Wharton professor, adviser to leaders across the globe, and passionate advocate of replacing the misguided metaphor of “work/life balance” with something more realistic and sustainable. If you’re seeking “balance” you’ll never achieve it, argues Friedman. The idea that “work” competes with “life” ignores the more nuanced reality of our humanity—the interaction of four domains: work, home, community, and the private self. The goal is to create harmony among them instead of thinking only in terms of trade-offs. It can be done. Building on his national bestseller, Total Leadership, and on decades of research, teaching, and practice as both consultant and senior executive, Friedman identifies the critical skills for integrating work and the rest of life. He illustrates them through compelling original stories of these remarkable people: • former Bain & Company CEO and Bridgespan co-founder Tom Tierney • Facebook COO and bestselling author Sheryl Sandberg • nonprofit leader and US Navy SEAL Eric Greitens • US First Lady Michelle Obama • soccer champion-turned-broadcaster Julie Foudy • renowned artist Bruce Springsteen Each of these admirable (though surely imperfect) people exemplifies a set of skills—for being real, being whole, and being innovative—that produce a sense of purpose, coherence, and optimism. Based on interviews and research, their stories paint a vivid picture of how six very different leaders use these skills to act with authenticity, integrity, and creativity—and they prove that significant public success is accomplished not at the expense of the rest of life, but as the result of meaningful engagement in all its parts. With dozens of practical exercises for strengthening these skills, curated from the latest research in organizational psychology and related fields, this book will inspire you, inform you, and instruct you on how to take realistic steps now toward leading the life you truly want.
