Book Napalm

Download or read book Napalm written by Robert M. Neer and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Napalm, incendiary gel that sticks to skin and burns to the bone, came into the world on Valentine’s Day 1942 at a secret Harvard war research laboratory. On March 9, 1945, it created an inferno that killed over 87,500 people in Tokyo—more than died in the atomic explosions at Hiroshima or Nagasaki. It went on to incinerate sixty-four of Japan’s largest cities. The Bomb got the press, but napalm did the work. After World War II, the incendiary held the line against communism in Greece and Korea—Napalm Day led the 1950 counter-attack from Inchon—and fought elsewhere under many flags. Americans generally applauded, until the Vietnam War. Today, napalm lives on as a pariah: a symbol of American cruelty and the misguided use of power, according to anti-war protesters in the 1960s and popular culture from Apocalypse Now to the punk band Napalm Death and British street artist Banksy. Its use by Serbia in 1994 and by the United States in Iraq in 2003 drew condemnation. United Nations delegates judged deployment against concentrations of civilians a war crime in 1980. After thirty-one years, America joined the global consensus, in 2011. Robert Neer has written the first history of napalm, from its inaugural test on the Harvard College soccer field, to a Marine Corps plan to attack Japan with millions of bats armed with tiny napalm time bombs, to the reflections of Phan Thi Kim Phuc, a girl who knew firsthand about its power and its morality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping history of Britain's Special Boat Squadron in World War II, drawing on veteran interviews and including rare photographs from the SAS Regimental Association. The Special Boat Squadron was Britain's most exclusive Special Forces unit during World War II, and yet its exploits have been largely forgotten. This book tells its story. Highly trained, totally secretive and utterly ruthless, the SBS was established as an entity in its own right in early 1943. Unlike its sister unit, which numbered more than 1,000 men, the SBS never comprised more than 100. Led by men such as the famed Victoria Cross recipient Anders Lassen, the SBS went from island to island in the Mediterranean, landing in the dead of night in small fishing boats and launching savage hit and run raids on the Germans. Through unrivalled access to the archives of the SAS Regimental Association and interviews with the surviving members of the unit, Gavin Mortimer has pieced together the dramatic feats of this elite fighting force. In this new and updated paperback edition, featuring additional content including new text and photographs, the unit and its members are finally granted the recognition that they so richly deserve.

Book 50 Jahre Wahrheit und Methode

Download or read book 50 Jahre Wahrheit und Methode written by Riccardo Dottori and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2012 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The turning point occurred with Heidegger's hermeneutics of facticity saw a great flourishing in Gadamer's works. Hermeneutics becomes the philosophy that undermines the scientific parameters of modernity and it looks for an extra-metodica way that leads up to truth through the rediscovery of the cultural values of our European tradition that is art, taste and culture but above all, rhetoric, practical philosophy, and that particular form of judgment called phronesis, which expresses itself in the understanding of the other and in the dialogue. This sensitivity towards the values of tradition, which represents the authentic authority since it's the consent on which the civil society is based, cannot for Gadamer withdraw into itself but it must open itself to the intercultural dialogue as an ethical answer to the challenge of globalization. PLEASE NOTE: Only three of the book's twenty-two essays are in English language text. (Series: The Dialogue - Yearbook of Philosophical Hermeneutics - Vol. 5)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller: The true story of the WWII naval battle portrayed in the Roland Emmerich film is “something special among war histories” (Chicago Sun-Times). Six months after Pearl Harbor, the seemingly invincible Imperial Japanese Navy prepared a decisive blow against the United States. After sweeping through Asia and the South Pacific, Japan’s military targeted the tiny atoll of Midway, an ideal launching pad for the invasion of Hawaii and beyond. But the US Navy would be waiting for them. Thanks to cutting-edge code-breaking technology, tactical daring, and a significant stroke of luck, the Americans under Adm. Chester W. Nimitz dealt Japan’s navy its first major defeat in the war. Three years of hard fighting remained, but it was at Midway that the tide turned. This “stirring, even suspenseful narrative” is the first book to tell the story of the epic battle from both the American and Japanese sides (Newsday). Miracle at Midway reveals how America won its first and greatest victory of the Pacific war—and how easily it could have been a loss.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Bando has dedicated this work to this famous American airborne division engaged in the Normandy and Ardennes battles. He relays in dramatic detail the histories recounted by hundreds of veterans, making this work a necessary addition to the enthusiast's library. Mark Bando is the well-known author of three previous books about the 101st Airborne Division in WWII and of Breakout at Normandy: The 2d Armored Division in the Land of the Dead. Expanding on his previous works, Vanguard of the Crusade is comprehensive, addressing the entire WWII record of the 101st. The author was born and raised on the west side of Detroit, MI, attended Cass Technical High School and later Wayne State University, as a history major. HE served 25 years as a uniformed Detroit Police patrol officer, working in five different precincts and spending six years in the citywide Tactical Section, during which he heard many shots fired in anger. Bando began interviewing WWII veterans of the 101st in 1968 and has continued to the present, with a running total of over 1,025 interviews. This lifelong pursuit grew out of a recognition of the superior battlefield performance of the WWII 101st and their resulting legendary historical status. His quest has been not only the record their exceptional experiences for posterity, but also ti study the combat paratroopers to discover the reasons for their great successes in battle. Uniquely, Bando has focused almost exclusively on the 101st for four decades, providing his books an abundance of rich, untold stories and a depth of detail which other researchers simply cannot match.
