Book excerpt: Do you love pets but feel powerless to help those less fortunate than yours? Ever wonder how you can improve the lives of the homeless cats living in your community, or what you can do to convince your neighbors to fix their dog? How you can be an effective animal advocate when you don't have a big budget, or the best way to approach a vet for help with a stray animal? These questions, and more, are answered in $5 For a Cat Head. Because none of the animals featured in the book could write their own histories, the author recounts their lives. Sometimes happy, sometimes sad, never is the wonder and mystery of these companion animals overlooked. After reading $5 For a Cat Head, you will:⢠Realize why spay/neuter surgery should be your first priority when promoting pet welfare.⢠Understand some of the realities low-income pet owners face when trying to care for their pets.⢠Consider some issues involved in getting dogs off chains.⢠Explore feral cat concerns.⢠Learn steps you can take to encourage feline spay/neuter surgery at an early age.⢠Discover ways you can help others get their pets fixed.⢠Recognize your responsibilities when offering homeless pets for adoption.⢠Review some of the reasons people do not properly care for their pets.⢠Determine potential interventions with injured animals.⢠Discern the best organizations to which you can donate your money or time.⢠Find inspiration to improve pet welfare in your community.⢠Gain perspective on the catchphrase 'no-kill'.Drawing upon experience gained over 23 years, $5 For a Cat Head shows you how to promote pet welfare by focusing first on efforts to fix pets and halt the reproduction of unwanted animals. It provides practical tips that will jump-start your efforts to help pets in your community while telling stories of the amazing animals encountered over decades of animal welfare work. You'll rediscover the joy, grace, comfort, peace, and beauty of those precious cats and dogs who stand with us as our beloved companions.

Book Head Driven Phrase Structure Grammar

Download or read book Head Driven Phrase Structure Grammar written by Carl Pollard and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1994-08-15 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the most complete exposition of the theory of head-driven phrase structure grammar (HPSG), introduced in the authors' Information-Based Syntax and Semantics. HPSG provides an integration of key ideas from the various disciplines of cognitive science, drawing on results from diverse approaches to syntactic theory, situation semantics, data type theory, and knowledge representation. The result is a conception of grammar as a set of declarative and order-independent constraints, a conception well suited to modelling human language processing. This self-contained volume demonstrates the applicability of the HPSG approach to a wide range of empirical problems, including a number which have occupied center-stage within syntactic theory for well over twenty years: the control of "understood" subjects, long-distance dependencies conventionally treated in terms of wh-movement, and syntactic constraints on the relationship between various kinds of pronouns and their antecedents. The authors make clear how their approach compares with and improves upon approaches undertaken in other frameworks, including in particular the government-binding theory of Noam Chomsky.

Why do lies seem to linger so long in the cultural subconscious even after they’ve been thoroughly discredited? And why, when more people than ever before are documenting the truth with laptops and digital cameras, does fact-free spin and propaganda seem to work so well? True Enough explores leading controversies of national politics, foreign affairs, science, and business, explaining how Americans have begun to organize themselves into echo chambers that harbor diametrically different facts—not merely opinions—from those of the larger culture.

What makes Bailey more addictive than catnip? In addition to his adorable expressions and his hilarious, heartfelt antics, Bailey has a penchant for doing things that are characteristically uncatlike--things like taking bubble baths (and enjoying them), sitting attentively in a chair and being read to (for hours), getting a "pet"-icure, and his unending patience while co-raising his human siblings Abby and Hannah (yes, there is photographic evidence that Bailey helped with potty-training). If you have a cat you know how independent they are. Bailey, No Ordinary Cat celebrates the unique quirky spirit of this unforgettable feline through four-color photographs and captions from the voice of Bailey himself. Cat lovers will be delighted to peek into the life of their favorite celebrity cat with the huge eyes, huge heart, and huge personality--and an ever-growing following.
