Book Electoral Pledges in Britain Since 1918

Download or read book Electoral Pledges in Britain Since 1918 written by David Thackeray and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobody doubts that politicians ought to fulfil their promises – what people cannot agree about is what this means in practice. The purpose of this book is to explore this issue through a series of case studies. It shows how the British model of politics has changed since the early twentieth century when electioneering was based on the articulation of principles which, it was expected, might well be adapted once the party or politician that promoted them took office. Thereafter manifestos became increasingly central to electoral politics and to the practice of governing, and this has been especially the case since 1945. Parties were now expected to outline in detail what they would do in office and explain how the policies would be paid for. Brexit has complicated this process, with the ‘will of the people’ as supposedly expressed in the 2016 referendum result clashing with the conventional role of the election manifesto as offering a mandate for action.

Book The British General Election of 2017

Download or read book The British General Election of 2017 written by Philip Cowley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-27 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British General Election of 2017 is the definitive and authoritative account of one of the most dramatic elections in British history. Throwing aside her natural caution, Theresa May called a snap election and was widely expected to crush Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party. Her gamble backfired spectacularly as the Conservatives lost their Commons majority to a resurgent Labour led by one of the most unconventional politicians to lead a major British political party. Drawing on hundreds of interviews, with unparalleled access to all the key players, The British General Election of 2017 offers a revelatory guide to what really happened. The 20th edition in this prestigious series of books dating back to 1945, it is designed to appeal to everyone — from Westminster insiders and politics students to the wider general public.

Book Canada Transformed

Download or read book Canada Transformed written by Sarah Gibson and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2014-12-09 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To coincide with the bicentennial of Sir John A. Macdonald's birth, this is the first-ever selected collection of his most important and defining speeches. Published in collaboration with The Sir John A. Macdonald Bicentennial Commission, and endorsed by all of our living Prime Ministers, this is a beautifully produced book that deserves to be in all Canadian homes, schools, and libraries. The Sir John A. Macdonald Bicentennial Commission set out several years ago to collect, annotate, and footnote all of our first Prime Minister's speeches. Rather shockingly, this had not been done before; the speeches of even the most minor of US presidents are available in print and e-book form. Obviously, such a collection is a must for libraries and educational institutions across the country as a matter of historical record, but the speeches also make for great reading. His words have a Churchillian feel to them -- direct, decisive, visionary, and very often funny. Sir John A. is marvellously quotable, and through these speeches you understand how our country was formed, what its challenges were and often continue to be, and why our first PM was perhaps the best we'll ever have.

  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Age of Promises explores the issue of electoral promises in twentieth century Britain - how they were made, how they were understood, and how they evolved across time - through a study of general election manifestos and election addresses. The authors argue that a history of the act of making promises - which is central to the political process, but which has not been sufficiently analysed - illuminates the development of political communication and democratic representation. The twentieth century saw a broad shift away from politics viewed as a discursive process whereby, at elections, it was enough to set out broad principles, with detailed policymaking to follow once in office following reflection and discussion. Over the first part of the century parties increasingly felt required to compile lists of specific policies to offer to voters, which they were then considered to have an obligation to carry out come what may. From 1945 onwards, moreover, there was even more focus on detailed, costed, pledges. We live in an age of growing uncertainty over the authority and status of political promises. In the wake of the 2016 EU referendum controversy erupted over parliamentary sovereignty. Should 'the will of the people' as manifested in the referendum result be supreme, or did MPs owe a primary responsibility to their constituents and/or to the party manifestos on which they had been elected? Age of Promises demonstrates that these debates build on a long history of differing understandings about what status of manifestos and addresses should have in shaping the actions of government.

Book Canada Always

Download or read book Canada Always written by Arthur Milnes and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In celebration of Sir Wilfrid Laurier's 175th birthday -- November 20th, 2016 is "Sir Wilfrid Laurier Day" -- this is the first time his most important and iconic speeches will be published in book form, annotated and with essays by a stunning array of politicians, journalists, and acclaimed academics. "Sunny ways my friends, sunny ways." These were the words used in triumph by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau the night he was elected Canada's 23rd Prime Minister. They were also the words Sir Wilfrid Laurier used to call Canadians to greatness a century before. Canada Always brings together the most significant speeches of one of Canada's greatest leaders on the 175th anniversary of his birth. Readers will follow Laurier from his earliest years in Canadian politics, through his history-making fifteen-year Premiership, and then again as his generous vision of Canada is sorely tested by the flames and fire of the First World War. Edited by veteran political speechwriter and PM historian Arthur Milnes, Canada Always features essays of commentary by seven of Laurier's living successors as Prime Minister of Canada. They are joined by Mr. Justice Thomas Cromwell of the Supreme Court of Canada; past Prime Ministerial chiefs-of-staff like Thomas Axworthy, Edward Goldenberg, Nigel Wright, Derek Burney, and Hugh Segal; journalists André Pratte, Steve Paikin, Jane Taber, Lawrence Martin, and Andrew Cohen; past and sitting Premiers Rachel Notley, Christy Clark, Jean Charest, Roy Romanow, Alison Redford, and Bob Rae; distinguished academics including David Asper; former US Ambassador to Canada David Jacobson (on Laurier's legacy in Canada-US relations); while the Rt. Hon. Tony Blair considers Laurier from his unique position as a past Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. As Canada stands on the cusp of her 150th birthday, Canada Always will be an essential part of the library of any Canadian seeking a further understanding of the words that defined our nation: Laurier's words.

Book The Defeat of Barisan Nasional

Download or read book The Defeat of Barisan Nasional written by Francis E Hutchinson and published by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of Malaysia’s 14th General Elections of May 2018 were unexpected and transformative. Against conventional wisdom, the newly reconfigured opposition grouping Pakatan Harapan (PH) decisively defeated the incumbent Barisan Nasional (BN), ending six decades of uninterrupted dominant one-party rule. Despite a long-running financial scandal dogging the ruling coalition, pollsters and commentators predicted a solid BN victory or, at least, a narrow parliamentary majority. Yet, on the day, deeply rooted political dynamics and influential actors came together, sweeping aside many prevailing assumptions and reconfiguring the country’s political reality in the process. In order to understand the elections and their implications, this edited volume brings together contributions from ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute researchers and a group of selected collaborators to examine the elections from three angles: campaign dynamics; important trends among major interest groups; and local-level dynamics and developments in key states. This analytical work is complemented by personal narratives from a selection of GE-14 participants.

Book Prospects for Peace and Development in Southern Africa in the 1990s

Download or read book Prospects for Peace and Development in Southern Africa in the 1990s written by Larry Anthony Swatuk and published by Lanham, Md. : University Press of America ; [Halifax, N.S.] : Centre for African Studies, Dalhousie University. This book was released on 1991 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we move into the final decade of the twentieth century, the struggle for peace and development in Southern Africa continues. Recent events - national, regional, and global - suggest that the long battle against apartheid may soon be over. In South Africa, Mandela has been released, the ANC unbanned, and the Pretoria Minute provides the point of departure for talks about talks. Nambia is now independent. Embattled regimes in Angola and Mozambique have begun negotiating with formerly unrecognized guerrilla movements toward peace and reintegration. It would seem then that prospects for peace, development, and the lifting of racial oppression have never looked better in the sub-continent. Upon closer scrutiny, however, it may seem that this process is fragmented, fragile, and by no means assured of success. This collection of essays taken from an international symposium held at Dalhousie University to coincide with Nambia's independence focuses on these and other recent events in order to assess the prospects for peace and development in this region in the 1990s, and speculate on the role to be played by external state and non-state actors therein. By emphasising the post-Cold War, post-destabilization, structural adjustment policies period, this monograph seeks to make a novel contribution to the on going debates about development, democracy, and a post-apartheid South and Southern Africa. Co-published with the Dalhousie University Centre for African Studies.

Book The Macro Polity

Download or read book The Macro Polity written by Robert S. Erikson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-14 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Borrowing from the perspective of macroeconomics, it treats electorates, politicians, and governments as unitary actors, making decisions in response to the behavior of other actors. The macro and longitudinal focus makes it possible to directly connect the behaviors of electorate and government. The surprise of macro-level analysis, emerging anew in every chapter, is that order and rationality dominate explanations.
