Book excerpt: When we go to sleep at night, we undress our souls by leaving our physical bodies behind. They are no longer needed in the "dream world." Our host bodies lie motionless and in autopilot while we dream, waiting for our souls' return. We all have a connection with the those in the spirit world, yet through sleep, we open a direct line of communication. Brianna's experience living with narcolepsy and education in Polysomnography provide the evidence needed to bridge the gap between medical advances in sleep and neurology and spiritual teachings of the afterlife. 40 Winks offers affirmation to those who may be questioning their own experiences as coincidence or being "just a dream." This is the story of her journey.

Book excerpt: ‘Forty is a fine age, a young, strong powerful, prime-of-life age, a frisky age, a coming-to-maturity age when all things are possible. But beware, it is also an apocalyptic number, a number full of climactic warnings' - Margaret Drabble. 40 is a truly meaningful and fascinating number. For example, the number forty is used in Jewish, Christian, Islamic, and other Middle Eastern traditions to represent a large, approximate number: ‘umpteen’; forty is the number of weeks for an average term of pregnancy; forty is the customary number of hours in a working week; rain fell for ‘forty days and forty nights’ during the Flood; forty is the only number with its letters in alphabetical order; Jesus fasted for forty days and nights . . . Inspired by 40, this collection contains thrilling contributions from some of the most high-profile writers, artists and illustrators of our time and is beautifully illustrated by Tom Gauld. And to celebrate Canongate’s 40th anniversary you can have this fantastic little eBook for free! It’s on us! Enjoy... Despite time, neglect and progress, Route 66 endures. Almost all of its 2,448 miles are still intact and drivable. It presents pictures of many of the historic landmarks and longtime businesses which have become roadside institutions to several generations of Route 66 travelers, plus some places that are relatively unknown to the average traveler. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While slavery in Canada was abolished in 1834, discrimination remained. Race on Trial contrasts formal legal equality with pervasive patterns of social, legal, and attitudinal inequality in Ontario by documenting the history of black Ontarians who appeared before the criminal courts from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. Using capital case files and the assize records for Kent and Essex counties, areas that had significant black populations because they were termini for the Underground Railroad, Barrington Walker investigates the limits of freedom for Ontario's African Canadians. Through court transcripts, depositions, jail records, Judge's Bench Books, newspapers, and government correspondence, Walker identifies trends in charges and convictions in the Black population. This exploration of the complex and often contradictory web of racial attitudes and the values of white legal elites not only exposes how blackness was articulated in Canadian law but also offers a rare glimpse of black life as experienced in Canada's past.

Book excerpt: 'I looked at the streets of Yagoona through eyes stinging with melted Maybelline liquid liner. Yagoona looked back at me, the wannabe hipster who dreamed of moving to a share house in the inner west, and cackled. Funny Ethnics catapults readers into the sprawling city-within-a-city that is Western Sydney and the world of Sylvia Nguyen: only child of Vietnamese refugee parents, unexceptional student, exceptional self-doubter. It's a place where migrants from across the world converge, and identity is a slippery, ever-shifting beast. Jumping through snapshots of Sylvia's life - from childhood to something resembling adulthood - this novel is about square pegs and round holes, those who belong and those on the fringes. It's a funhouse mirror held up to modern Australia revealing suburban fortune tellers, train-carriage preachers, crumbling friendships and bad stand-up comedy. In Funny Ethnics, Shirley Le uses a coming-of-age tale to reveal a side of Australia so ordinary that it's entirely bizarre.

Fearing for her financial and personal safety, Tricia hires detectives to sort out these lingering mysteries, and as they investigate, it's clear that she faces a situation far direr than she had imagined. Her trust fund could be lost to various persons with eyes on her father's estate and claims on gambling debts he left behind. Her two step-brothers may be players in a drug ring and other shady activities, with designs of their own for the family fortune. And the circumstances of the second wife's death are disturbingly unclear. What had started out as a basic probate case has escalated into something deeply complicated and menacing, even as Tricia strives to hold onto a happy family life. Backtrack Forward is a mystery of family intrigue and dogged detective work in which the stakes are high, the clues elusive, the motives murky, and the outcome anything but obvious.
