Book excerpt: In May 1901, just three years after Joshua Slocum's legendary solo voyage around the world, another professional seaman idled by the passing of the Age of Sail set off on an extraordinary ocean journey. Saying goodbye to his wife and children, he put to sea from Victoria, British Columbia, with one other man in a converted Native American war canoe. Voss's objective was to circle the world in a boat smaller than Slocum's Spray, and his canoe, which he named Tilikum, certainly qualified. Although 38 feet long, it was a mere 5 and a half feet wide and drew just 24 inches when fully loaded. When he first saw the canoe, he said, it struck me at once that I we could make our proposed voyage we would not alone make a world's record for the smallest vessel but also the only canoe that had ever circumnavigated the globe. To prepare the dugout red-cedar canoe for an ocean voyage, Voss had built up the sides seven inches, decked it over, and added a tiny 5 x 8 foot cabin, a cockpit for steering, a small keel and three small masts carrying four sails. A grateful public generally lauded their efforts, but when they turned their attention to Arkansas’s Buffalo River, the vocal opposition their proposed projects generated dumbfounded them. Never before had anyone challenged the Corps’s assumption that damming a river was an improvement. Led by Neil Compton, a physician in Bentonville, Arkansas, a group of area conservationists formed the Ozark Society to join the battle for the Buffalo. This book is the account of this decade-long struggle that drew in such political figures as supreme court justice William O. Douglas, Senator J. William Fulbright, and Governor Orval Faubus. The battle finally ended in 1972 with President Richard Nixon’s designation of the Buffalo as the first national river. Drawing on hundreds of personal letters, photographs, maps, newspaper articles, and reminiscences, Compton’s lively book details the trials, gains, setbacks, and ultimate triumph in one of the first major skirmishes between environmentalists and developers.

He and his craft were at the center of notable events in canoeing history in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Rushton was born in 1843 in a small settlement on the edge of the Adirondack wilderness. In his thirties, seeking to cure himself of "consumption" in the mountain air, he built a boat for a trip into the woods. Tradition has it friends asked Rushton to build boats for them, too, and his career was started. Rushton was fortunate in his patrons. In 1880 he was approached by the outdoor writer, George Washington Sears, better known by his pen name 11Nessmuk.'' A frail man, Nessmuk asked Rushton to build him an exceptionally lightweight canoe. Nessmuk's solitary tours of Adirondack waterways in the 10 3⁄4-pound Sairy Gamp set a new trend in sports life. His letters in the journal Forest and Stream did much to popularize unguided travel through the wilderness and to spread Rushton's fame. Many illustrations, including two previously unpublished sketches by Frederic Remington, help tell the story here. Five appendixes include Rushton's catalog descriptions of his construction methods; a reprint of an article by Nessmuk, an account of the Rushton canoes extant today, drawings and specifications of seven of these extant canoes, and a lengthy discussion by Harry Rushton of his father's methods of craftsmanship.
