Book excerpt: With wonder and a sense of humor, Nature Obscura author Kelly Brenner aims to help us rediscover our connection to the natural world that is just outside our front door--we just need to know where to look. Through explorations of a rich and varied urban landscape, Brenner reveals the complex micro-habitats and surprising nature found in the middle of a city. In her hometown of Seattle, which has plowed down hills, cut through the land to connect fresh- and saltwater, and paved over much of the rest, she exposes a diverse range of strange and unknown creatures. From shore to wetland, forest to neighborhood park, and graveyard to backyard, Brenner uncovers how our land alterations have impacted nature, for good and bad, through the wildlife and plants that live alongside us, often unseen. These stories meld together, in the same way our ecosystems, species, and human history are interconnected across the urban environment.

Download or read book Reforesting Faith written by Matthew Sleeth and published by WaterBrook. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking walk through Scripture by former physician and carpenter Dr. Matthew Sleeth makes the convincing case that trees reveal more about God and faith than you ever imagined. “Christians looking to reconnect to the natural world will relish Sleeth’s passionate call to Christian stewardship of the Earth.”—Publishers Weekly Fifteen years ago, Matthew Sleeth believed that science and logic held the answers to everything. But when tragedy struck, he opened the Bible for the first time and was surprised to find that God chose to tell the gospel story through a trail of trees. There’s a tree on the first page of Genesis, in the first psalm, on the first page of the New Testament, and on the last page of Revelation. The Bible’s wisdom is referred to as a tree of life. Every major biblical character and every major theological event has a tree marking the spot. A tree was the only thing that could kill Jesus—and the only thing Jesus ever harmed. Reforesting Faith is the rare book that builds bridges by connecting those who love the Creator with creation and those who love creation with the Creator. Join Dr. Sleeth as he explores the wonders of life, death, and rebirth through the trail of trees in Scripture. Once you discover the hidden language of trees, your walk through the woods—and through Scripture—will never be the same.

Book excerpt: What Are Your Solutions to Life’s Questions? This is not your typical book. Here, you will find 365 questions designed to open up your mind to think about yourself and your place in the world in new ways. With these questions, you may come to powerful realizations that will help you to improve yourself, the people around you, and maybe even the world. Most self-development books present you with solutions to common problems. This can be helpful, but what if those solutions work for most people, but not you? Perhaps what you need is a book of questions to help stimulate you to find useful solutions for your unique situation. Maybe you always had the solutions deep down somewhere inside of you, and you just needed the right questions to help guide you to them. When you do the work of pursuing your answers to these Questions, you will be rewarded with a breakthrough in understanding your life, your place in the world, and the path that you were destined for. Understand that there is no single right answer, no one perspective that is right, there is only your personal truth that you must reveal to yourself. In Question Yourself, the authors give you the credit that with your knowledge, background and experiences, and with the right questions, you will be able to discover solutions to your life’s troubles. Look inside, deeper and deeper into yourself, and you may be surprised at the power and abilities you always possessed. You may even discover new parts of yourself you never knew existed. Authors Dave Edelstein (A.B., Philosophy from Harvard University) and I. C. Robledo (M.S., Industrial-Organizational Psychology from University of Oklahoma) combine their expertise in philosophy, psychology, and self-development to provide you with questions which were designed to help you help yourself. The authors believe there is enormous potential in seeking the answers within, rather than always seeking them from sources outside of yourself. Here is a small sample of the Questions you will find inside: - Question #9: Are you afraid of being alone with yourself? Or do you enjoy it? - Question #57: What is love? How do you show it? - Question #112: What is the one thing you know for sure? - Question #182: Are the small moments in life worth more than we give them credit for? - Question #263: What amount of money would it take for you to consider forsaking your deeply held values? - Question #295: Are you in the process of fulfilling your dreams, or is there an obstacle in your path? - Question #359: Have you ever felt personally touched by a spirit or higher power? Are you ready to find meaningful solutions to your life’s greatest troubles with Question Yourself? Question Yourself will help you to begin searching for answers to some of life’s toughest, challenging, and thought-provoking questions. Questioning is a skill and art that we must all develop, but this book rather than answering your questions, actually provides questions for every day of the new year that you might have never even thought to ask on your own. These will offer you some of the best questions to figure out this life all on your own. No book can provide you a definitive answer to these difficult questions, but perhaps you can figure it all out for yourself, with a bit of thought and reflection. Perhaps you can change your life by truly digging deep and searching for your own responses, with this awesome list of wonderful questions to use as a prompt. Download or read book Symbolism written by Florian Klaeger and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-10-03 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Special Focus: "Omission", edited by Patrick Gill Throughout literary history and in many cultures, we encounter an astute use of conspicuous absences to conjure an imagined reality into a recipient’s mind. The term ‘omission’ as used in the present study, then, demarcates a common artistic phenomenon: a silence, blank, or absence, introduced against the recipient’s generic or experiential expectations, but which nonetheless frequently encapsulates the tenor of the work as a whole. Such omissions can be employed for their affective potential, when emotions represented or evoked by the text are deemed to be beyond words. They can be employed to raise epistemological questions, as when an omission marks the limits of what can be known. Ethical questions can also be approached by means of omissions, as when a character’s voice is omitted, for instance. Finally, omission always carries within it the potential to reflect on the media and genres on which it is brought to bear: as its efficacy depends on the recipient’s generic expectations, omission is frequently characterized by a high degree of meta-discursiveness. This volume investigates the various strategies with which the phenomenon of omission is employed across a range of textual forms and in different cultures to conclusively argue for its status as a highly effective and near-universal form of artistic signification.

Download or read book A Different Nature written by David Hancocks and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A well-written and provocative, opinion-rich account of zoos, their history, and their goals and purposes. Hancocks has earned the right to speak authoritatively about these subjects, thanks to his tenure as director of two leading U. S. zoos. This book will appeal to general readers and to all persons interested in zoos and their role in conservation and education."—John Alcock, author of Animal Behavior: An Evolutionary Approach "Giraffes, elephants, gorillas, snakes, and toucans respond poorly to the usual conventions of human architecture. Zoo architects usually respond no less poorly to the needs of animals. David Hancocks draws on a lifetime's experience working as a zoo director and zoo architect to explore this dilemma, and offers a compelling vision for the future. This is an important book for those interested in conservation as well as for zoo and museum buffs."—William Conway, former President and General Director of the Wildlife Conservation Society and the Bronx Zoo "For over two decades David Hancocks has fervently tried to reform the fundamental character and mission of zoos. This book is his most thorough analysis of what is wrong with them and his most detailed and compelling plea for improvement. Every conscientious zoo administrator, curator, and keeper should read it from cover to cover with an open mind. Professionals in botanical gardens, museums, and nature parks should also consider this treatise because Hancocks advocates that a fusion of all of these institutions into a new entity better positioned to interpret the entire biosphere."-Mark A. Dimmitt, Director of Natural History, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
