Born in the desperate days of World War II, the B-36 became an icon of the early Cold War when it represented the only weapon that could reach the Soviet Union from bases in North America. Since many of these are significant - or at least interesting - and most have never been published previously, it was decided to print the scrapbook as a companion volume to Magnesium Overcast. However, as work went into the scrapbook, additional images and illustrations were discovered and are also included here. With over 300 b/w and color photos, this scrapbook provides an excellent visual look at a very exciting period of the Cold War.

Nor is the need met by survey courses that offer a smorgasbord of tidbit--they give science a bad name as a compendium of information or formulas. The non-scientist needs a course of study that enables him to learn real science and make its own--with delight. For lasting benefits the intelligent non-scientist needs a course of study that enables him to learn genuine science carefully and then encourages him to think about it and use it. He needs a carefully selected framework of topics--not so many that learning becomes superficial and hurried; not so few that he misses the connected nature of scientific work and thinking. He must see how scientific knowledge is built up by building some scientific knowledge of his own, by reading and discussing and if possible by doing experiments himself. He must think his own way through some scientific arguments. He must form his own opinion, with guidance, concerning the parts played by experiment and theory; and he must be shown how to develop a taste for good theory. He must see several varieties of scientific method at work. And above all, he must think about science for himself and enjoy that. These are the things that this book encourages readers to gain, by their own study and thinking. Physics for the Inquiring Mind is a book for the inquiring mind of students in college and for other readers who want to grow in scientific wisdom, who want to know what physics really is.

In our digital age, I guess a romantic veil surrounds the analog approach to photography. Even when shooting digital cameras, we do postprocessing to simulate the look of analog film. We talk about the specific and beloved look of certain films, and how their sensitivity and grain add a charm to the image. Delving deeper, a reason for the analog renaissance might be our growing desire to slow down; to immerse ourselves and sharpen our creative senses by restraining the means with which we photograph. Where the digital camera is soon so perfect that we as photographers can sometimes feel redundant, the analog camera requires our undivided presence. These cameras are subject to the same limitations as they were in the dawn of photography. You must visualize what you want to create beforehand, and you cannot rely on an lcd to feed you the result. Thus, in analog photography we are forced to slow down, plan, create the right circumstances, and capture the wanted picture at the decisive moment.

Although Truman's career in politics was based on honesty and the welfare of the people, his early political alliance with Thomas Pendergast, Kansas City's notorious political boss, provided the opportunity for a portion of the press to charge Truman with subservience to Pendergast's own agenda of corrupt government. The history and the dynamics of the Truman presidency and the American news media, combined with biographical and institutional sketches of key individuals and news organizations, make Harry S. Truman and the News Media a captivating and original investigation of an American president. Well written and researched, this book will be of great value to Truman scholars, journalists, and anyone interested in American history or presidential studies.
