Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon the 100th anniversary of the most terrifying stretch of shark attacks in American history--a wave said to have been the inspiration for Jaws--comes a reissue of the classic Lyons Press account and investigation. In July 1916, a time when World War I loomed over America and New York City was in the midst of a deadly polio epidemic, the tri-state area sought relief at the Jersey shore. The Atlantic’s refreshing waters proved to be utterly inhospitable, however. In just twelve days, four swimmers were violently and fatally mauled in separate shark attacks, and a fifth swimmer escaped an attack within inches of his life. In this thoroughly researched account, Dr. Richard Fernicola, the leading expert on the attacks, presents a riveting portrait, investigation, and scientific analysis of the terrifying days against the colorful backdrop of America in 1916 in Twelve Days of Terror.

Book Trisha s 31 Nights of Fright

Download or read book Trisha s 31 Nights of Fright written by Trisha Paytas and published by . This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carrie. The Exorcist. Scream. The Thing. These are the movies that chill the blood and leave viewers huddled under the blankets at night. Of course, not every horror flick can boast such prestige. Leprechaun in the Hood is more likely to generate groans and catcalls than screams, while the dialogue in a gem like Texas Chainsaw Massacre: the Next Generation makes what's intended to be a screamfest into unintentional comedy. Join Trisha Paytas as she explores the wild, terrifying, and sometimes whacky world of slasher flicks and screamfests under the able guidance of horror movie writer Jeff Rendell. Together, the duo introduce thirty-one of the best and worst in horror-films so terrifying they haunt viewers for years, and those goofy flicks so bad they're good. Paytas watches well-known classics of the genre, as well as obscure works important for their influence or their connection to the broader world of cinema. Did you know before directing The Lord of the Rings Peter Jackson was best known for directing a New Zealand slasher flick called Dead Alive, widely considered one of the goriest movies ever made? Or that the flick includes an epic (and hilarious) man vs. zombie baby battle in a public park? Paytas shares one movie for every day in October. Each movie is rated by Fright Factor, Gore, and Body Count, with a wry synopsis so funny it's as entertaining as the movie itself. "Why It's Awesome" and "Why It Sucks" sections quickly bring you up to speed on a flick's best and worst features-with the caveat that it's sometimes the campiest of horror flicks that provide the most fun. After all, some days you want Piper Laurie's chilling portrayal of the religiously crazed mother in Carrie, and sometimes you want a heavily made-up Warrick Davis as a rapping Leprechaun. So lower the lights, grab your favorite movie snacks, and join Paytas and Rendell on their odyssey through abject terror, terrifyingly dark powers, chainsaws, leprechauns, and demons. Just remember, it's not their fault if you can't sleep when it's all over.

Book Twelve Nights at Rotter House

Download or read book Twelve Nights at Rotter House written by J.W. Ocker and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Felix Allsey is a travel writer with a keen eye for the paranormal, and he’s carved out a unique, if only slightly lucrative, niche for himself in nonfiction; he writes travelogues of the country’s most haunted places, after haunting them himself. When he convinces the owner of the infamous Rotterdam Mansion to let him stay on the premises for 13 nights, he believes he’s finally found the location that will bring him a bestseller. As with his other gigs, he sets rules for himself: no leaving the house for any reason, refrain from outside contact, and sleep during the day. When Thomas Ruth, Felix's oldest friend and fellow horror film obsessive, joins him on the project, the two dance around a recent and unspeakably painful rough-patch in their friendship, but eventually fall into their old rhythms of dark humor and movie trivia. That’s when things start going wrong: screams from upstairs, figures in the thresholds, and more than what should be in any basement. Felix realizes the book he’s writing, and his very state of mind, is tilting from nonfiction into all out horror, and the shocking climax answers a question that’s been staring these men in the face all along: In Rotter House, who’s haunting who?

Book excerpt: Examining the popularity of low-budget cinema, particularly slasher, occult, and rape-revenge films, the author argues that, while such films have been traditionally understood as offering only sadistic pleasure to their mostly male audiences, in actuality they align spectators not with the male tormentor but with the females being tormented--particularly the slasher movie's "final girls"--Who endure fear and degradation before rising to save themselves.--Adapted from publisher description.

Book Liberal Roots of Far Right Activism

Download or read book Liberal Roots of Far Right Activism written by Lars Erik Berntzen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-16 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the anti-Islamic turn and expansion of the far right in Western Europe, North America and beyond from 2001 and onwards. Driven by terror attacks and other moral shocks, the anti-Islamic cause has undergone four waves of transnational expansion in the period since 2001. The leaders and intellectuals involved have varied backgrounds, many coming from the left, uniting historically opposed sets of values under their banner of a civilizational struggle against Islam. The findings presented in this book indicate that anti-Islamic initiatives in Western Europe and the United States form a transnational movement and subculture characterized by a fragile balance between liberal and authoritarian values. The author draws on a broad array of data sources and methods, including network analysis and sentiment analysis, to analyze the impact of the anti-Islamic expansion and turn at a macro level, and the theoretical implications for our understanding of the current far right flowing from this. Offering an overview of anti-Islamic activism, the book explores the background of their leaders and ideologues, provides an in-depth look at their ideology, online organizational networks, and the views expressed by their online members as well as which emotions and messages continue to drive their mobilization. The book will be of interest to scholars in the social movement field as well as political scientists, sociologists, and general readers interested in issues such as populism, extremism and understanding the ways in which the contemporary far right challenges liberal democracies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We all have images that we find unwatchable, whether for ethical, political, or sensory-affective reasons. From news coverage of terror attacks to viral videos of police brutality, and from graphic horror films to incendiary artworks that provoke mass boycotts, many of the images in our media culture strike as beyond the pale of consumption. Yet what does it mean to proclaim a media object "unwatchable": disturbing, revolting, poor, tedious, or literally inaccessible? Appealing to a broad academic and general readership, Unwatchable offers multidisciplinary approaches to the vast array of troubling images that circulate in our global visual culture, from cinema, television, and video games through museums and classrooms to laptops, smart phones, and social media platforms. This anthology assembles 60 original essays by scholars, theorists, critics, archivists, curators, artists, and filmmakers who offer their own responses to the broadly suggestive question: What do you find unwatchable? The diverse answers include iconoclastic artworks that have been hidden from view, dystopian images from the political sphere, horror movies, TV advertisements, classic films, and recent award-winners"--

Book We Still Have Words

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A powerful, inspiring book' Observer Georges Salines lost his daughter Lola in the attack on the Bataclan Theatre in Paris on 13th November 2015. Azdyne Amimour lost his son. Both were aged 28. Lola was one of the 90 victims, Amimour's son one of the attackers. From his meeting with Azdyne Amimour, an unprecedented dialogue emerged. Georges Salines carries the memory of his daughter and many other victims, while Azdyne Amimour seeks to understand how his son was able to commit acts which he condemns without appeal. Driven by mutual curiosity, the two tell their stories and unfold the story of 'their' 13th November. In the course of this conversation, a deep respect was born between these two fathers whom everything should nevertheless have opposed. Their testimony feeds a peaceful reflection on radicalization, education and mourning. Because if there are words left, there is also hope.
