Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second edition of The Rise of Western Power, Jonathan Daly retains the broad sweep of his introduction to the history of Western civilization as well as introducing new material into every chapter, enhancing the book's global coverage and engaging with the latest historical debates. The West's history is one of extraordinary success: no other region, empire, culture, or civilization has left so powerful a mark upon the world. Daly charts the West's achievements-representative government, the free enterprise system, modern science, and the rule of law-as well as its misdeeds: two World Wars, the Holocaust, imperialistic domination, and the Atlantic slave trade. Taking us through a series of revolutions, he explores the contributions of other cultures and civilizations to the West's emergence, weaving in historical, geographical, and cultural factors. The new edition also contains more material on themes such as the environment and gender, and additional coverage of India, China and the Islamic world. Daly's engaging narrative is accompanied by timelines, maps and further reading suggestions, along with a companion website featuring study questions, over 100 primary sources and 60 historical maps to enable further study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before tractors or steam engines arrived on the farm, horses did all the heavy work. From spring plowing to the fall harvest, the mighty draft horse powered farms across the Midwest. Relied upon to complete a multitude of tasks, including towing threshing machines and plows, hauling milk to the local cheese factory, and pulling the family buggy to church each Sunday, these animals were at the center of farm life, cementing the bond between human and horse. Horse-Drawn Days: A Century of Farming with Horses captures stories of rural life at a time when a team of horses was a vital part of the farm family. Author Jerry Apps pairs lively historic narrative with reminiscences about his boyhood on the family farm in Wisconsin to paint a vivid picture of a bygone time. Featuring fascinating historic photos, ads, and posters, plus contemporary color photos of working horses today, Horse-Drawn Days evokes the majesty of these animals and illuminates the horse’s role in our country’s early history and our rural heritage.

Book The Book of Farm Implements and Machines Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Book of Farm Implements and Machines Classic Reprint written by James Slight and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-27 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Farm Implements and Machines I 71 Steam Cultivation - Mr William Smith of Woolstone, Bucks Mr John Allin Williams of Balyden, Wilts and Mr P. A. Halkett of Merton Road, Wandsworth, London. These gentlemen, by a large expenditure of time and money, have done much tos the solu tion of the question of economical steam-cultivation. The inven tions of Mr Smith and Mr Williams depend for their action on a system of traction by ropes, pulleys, and windlasses, after the man ner, more or less modified, employed by Mr Fowler, whose plan we have fully described. Mr Halkett's plan involves arrangements of decided novelty, inasmuch as he prepares the land to be cultivated for the operation of the implements employed, by laying down tram or guide ways, by which he proposes to insure a precision of Opera tion otherwise unattainable. Of machines or implements adapted to steam-cultivation, to be dragged over the land either by the direct power of a portable steam-engine fitted with Boydell's Endless Railway, or by the windlass-and-pulley system of Fowler, and cognate plans, we may here notice the Cultivator, with revolving tines, of Mr Bernard Samuelson of Banbury, and the Eleven-tined Cultivator of Mr Richard Coleman of Chelmsford. Of recent patents connected with steam cultivation now attracting attention, mention may be made of those of Mr A. Dacre Lacy, of Hall House, Knayton, near Thirsk, York shire; of Mr Thomas Keddy, of Handsforth, Stafford; of Mr T. Ricketts, of Castle Foundry, Buckingham and of Messrs Howard and Baker, Bedford.
