Book Il promo libro de madrigali a cinque voci Venice 1578

Download or read book Il promo libro de madrigali a cinque voci Venice 1578 written by Leonard Meldert and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leonard Meldert’s Primo libro de madrigali a cinque voci (Venice, 1578) has an interest and musical quality far beyond what one might guess from the modest facts of the author’s life and works. The book partly reflects the musical tastes of the court of Urbino in the final years of Duke Guidobaldo II Della Rovere (1514–74) and of the private household of his brother, Cardinal Giulio Della Rovere (1533–78). But its structure and contents display some unusual features that can be linked to the circumstances of Meldert’s life and to his own initiative in projecting and assembling his book of madrigals. Moreover, it offers the first settings of then-recent poems by Torquato Tasso, Giovanni Battista Guarini, and Giuliano Goselini, the result of the composer’s personal contacts in the court of Ferrara and his ties to the literary and musical circle of Antonio Londonio, a Milan-based Spanish diplomat. This edition presents the Primo libro for the first time in a modern edition, examining Meldert’s textual choices and musical style within the contexts of courtly life, his personal biography, and the nascent seconda prattica.

Download or read book Everyday Objects written by Tara Hamling and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the objects people owned and how they used them. Twenty-three specially written essays investigate the type of things that might have been considered 'everyday objects' in the medieval and early modern periods, and how they help us to understand the daily lives of those individuals for whom few other types of evidence survive - for instance people of lower status and women of all status groups. Everyday Objects presents new research by specialists from a range of disciplines to assess what the study of material culture can contribute to our understanding of medieval and early modern societies. Extending and developing key debates in the study of the everyday, the chapters provide analysis of such things as ceramics, illustrated manuscripts, pins, handbells, carved chimneypieces, clothing, drinking vessels, bagpipes, paintings, shoes, religious icons and the built fabric of domestic houses and guild halls. These things are examined in relation to central themes of pre-modern history; for instance gender, identity, space, morality, skill, value, ritual, use, belief, public and private behaviour, continental influence, materiality, emotion, technical innovation, status, competition and social mobility. This book offers both a collection of new research by a diverse range of specialists and a source book of current methodological approaches for the study of pre-modern material culture. The multi-disciplinary analysis of these 'everyday objects' by archaeologists, art historians, literary scholars, historians, conservators and museum practitioners provides a snapshot of current methodological approaches within the humanities. Although analysis of material culture has become an increasingly important aspect of the study of the past, previous research in this area has often remained confined to subject-specific boundaries. This book will therefore be an invaluable resource for researchers and students interested in learning about important new work which demonstrates the potential of material culture study to cut across traditional historiographies and disciplinary boundaries and access the lived experience of individuals in the past.

Book The Garden of Love in Tuscan Art of the Early Renaissance

Download or read book The Garden of Love in Tuscan Art of the Early Renaissance written by Paul F. Watson and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Garden of Love is an important subject in secular art of the fifteenth century, both in Italy and in northern Europe. The chief Italian examples were all painted in Tuscany in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. They depict a landscape consisting of a flowery meadow, a grove, and a great marble fountain, where lovers gather to sing, dance, and make love. Allied to the Garden of Love are variations on a horticultural theme--gardens for lovers celebrated in history, fountains of love, hunts set in a forest that conclude alongside a fountain. Sometimes, too, the Garden of Love becomes the setting for narratives and romances. In all these instances the Garden is more than a pleasing tapestry like backdrop: it serves as a visible symbol of the nature of love itself. This book illustrated with 97 excellent photographs, attempts to do two things ; to chart the history of the Garden of Love, and explain the significance it once had." -- Book jacket.

Its scope extends beyond the field of Italian studies, and includes references to other European literatures, visual arts, music, performance studies, gender studies, and social and religious history. It explores previously neglected areas of Aretino's literary and biographical identity: in particular, his religious writings and their fortune, his relationships to visual arts and music and his fashioning of a public persona. The essays here included support the current scholarly trend that no longer considers Aretino merely as a pornographer, but interpret his work in the light of the contemporary religious debate and cultural crisis"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this elegantly constructed study of the early decades of public opera, the conflicts and cooperation of poets, composers, managers, designers, and singers—producing the art form that was soon to sweep the world and that has been dominant ever since—are revealed in their first freshness."—Andrew Porter "This will be a standard work on the subject of the rise of Venetian opera for decades. Rosand has provided a decisive contribution to the reshaping of the entire subject. . . . She offers a profoundly new view of baroque opera based on a solid documentary and historical-critical foundation. The treatment of the artistic self-consciousness and professional activities of the librettists, impresarios, singers, and composers is exemplary, as is the examination of their reciprocal relations. This work will have a positive effect not only on studies of 17th-century, but on the history of opera in general."—Lorenzo Bianconi

Book Music and Riddle Culture in the Renaissance

Download or read book Music and Riddle Culture in the Renaissance written by Katelijne Schiltz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-23 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the Renaissance, composers often expressed themselves in a language of riddles and puzzles, which they embedded within the music and lyrics of their compositions. This is the first book on the theory, practice and cultural context of musical riddles during the period. Katelijne Schiltz focuses on the compositional, notational, practical, social and theoretical aspects of musical riddle culture c.1450–1620, from the works of Antoine Busnoys, Jacob Obrecht and Josquin des Prez to Lodovico Zacconi's manuscript collection of Canoni musicali. Schiltz reveals how the riddle both invites and resists interpretation, the ways in which riddles imply a process of transformation and the consequences of these aspects for the riddle's conception, performance and reception. Lavishly illustrated and including a comprehensive catalogue by Bonnie J. Blackburn of enigmatic inscriptions, this book will be of interest to scholars of music, literature, art history, theology and the history of ideas.

Book City Culture and the Madrigal at Venice

Download or read book City Culture and the Madrigal at Venice written by Martha Feldman and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martha Feldman's exploration of sixteenth-century Venetian madrigals centers on the importance to the Venetians of Ciceronian rhetorical norms, which emphasized decorum through adherence to distinct stylistic levels. She shows that Venice easily adapted these norms to its long-standing mythologies of equilibrium, justice, peace, and good judgment. Feldman explains how Venetian literary theorists conceived variety as a device for tempering linguistic extremes and thereby maintaining moderation. She further shows how the complexity of sacred polyphony was adapted by Venetian music theorists and composers to achieve similar ends. At the same time, Feldman unsettles the kinds of simplistic alignments between the collectivity of the state and its artistic production that have marked many historical studies of the arts. Her rich social history enables a more intricate dialectics among sociopolitical formations; the roles of individual printers, academists, merchants, and others; and the works of composers and poets. City Culture offers a new model for situating aesthetic products in a specific time and place, one that sees expressive objects not simply against a cultural backdrop but within an integrated complex of cultural forms and discursive practices.
