Download or read book Neurosis and Narrative written by Renée A. Kingcaid and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renée A. Kingcaid uses the theories of Jacques Lacan to explore the relationships between the literary structures found in the short stories of three writers of the French Decadence—Marcel Proust, Jean Lorrain, and Rachilde (Marguerite Vallette)—and those psychological structures that underlie neurosis. Kingcaid demonstrates, for example, how Marcel Proust uses fetishism to advance the plot in several of the short stories from his first published work, Pleasures and Regrets (1896). In discussing Jean Lorrain’s stories from Masked Figures and Phantoms (1891–1905), Kingcaid shows how repressed childhood trauma becomes a form of metonymy that inflates to assume the entire perceptual field and then leads to moments of horrible realization. By populating her short fiction from Demon of the Absurd (1894) and Stories (1900) with characters who are more interested in inspiring sexual desire than fulfilling it, Rachilde produces love stories that, according to Kingcaid, exemplify her ability to capture the possibilities of language to express desire, even as a structure of lack. Kingcaid’s rhetorical analysis of some of Freud’s case studies and her brief critique of Simone de Beauvoir’s Second Sex add to the comprehensiveness of her study.

Book excerpt: The city intrigues and fascinates in every era. In this book, the author explores images of urban life and the city as depicted in 18th-century French writings, with particular reference to Paris, Geneva and the utopian ideal. The 18th-century French city posed particular challenges to writer and citizen alike, presenting possibilities and pitfalls specific to the pre-Revolutionary decades. In contrast to previous studies of the beautiful or of the imaginary city, these essays in this collection consider everyday life on the streets of the metropolis, providing an outlook that is novel and markedly distinct. Most striking is the dramatic change in focus between the early and late decades of this troubled century. Initially, the city can be construed as a space which allows individuals to evolve and to flourish. Later in the century, the city is depicted textually as being unstable, in both moral and civic terms. In a stark transition, the city thus evolves from a place of great potential into a space of real danger, teetering on the verge of revolutionary chaos.

Download or read book Balzac s Shorter Fictions written by Tim Farrant and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2002-02-14 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Balzac's reputation is as a novelist. But short stories make up over half La Comédie humaine, besides scores of other tales and articles. Short forms appear early in Balzac's output, and shape his work throughout his career. Balzac's Shorter Fictions looks at the whole of this corpus, at the nature of short fiction, and at how Balzac's novels developed from his stories - at the links between literary genesis and genre. It explores the roles of short fiction in Balzac's creation, its part in producing effects of virtuality and perspective, and reflects ultimately on the relationship between brevity and length in La Comédie humaine. This, the first complete English-language study of Balzac's work for over forty years, synthesizes recent research on Balzac's practice within the context of modern thought on the author. It is an indispensable book for students and scholars of Balzac, and for all those interested in prose fiction.
