Download or read book The Letters and Diaries of John Henry Newman written by John Henry Newman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Henry Newman (1801-90) was brought up in the Church of England in the Evangelical tradition. An Oxford graduate and Fellow of Oriel College, he was appointed Vicar of St Mary's Oxford in 1828; from 1839 onwards he began to have doubts about the claims of the Anglican Church and in 1845 he was received into the Roman Catholic Church. He was made a Cardinal in 1879. His influence on both the restoration of Roman Catholicism in England and the advance of Catholic ideas in the Church of England was profound. Volume VIII covers a turbulent period in Newman's life with the publication of Tract 90. His attempt to show the compatibility of the 39 Articles with Catholic doctrine caused a storm both in the University of Oxford and in the Church. He and others were horrified by the establishment of a joint Anglo-Prussian Bishopric in Jerusalem, considering it an attempt to give Apostolical succession to an heretical church. In 1842 he moved away from the hubbub of Oxford life to nearby Littlemore.

Download or read book John Henry Newman written by Peter C. Wilcox and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-08-16 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Henry Newman (1801-1890) was a man who sought to integrate life and holiness. He believed that the spiritual life needed to be lived in an active and dynamic way, touching a person's fundamental attitudes and actions. Although Newman rejected the title of spiritual director as such, it is obvious from his correspondence that directing others through various facets of the Christian life was one of his dominant concerns. Surprisingly, comparatively little has been written about Newman's idea of spiritual direction. This book investigates Newman's understanding of spiritual direction during his life as a Roman Catholic, 1845-1890. It examines the major areas in which Newman gave spiritual direction through an analysis of the correspondence from his Catholic years. It also explicates those principles of Newman's own spiritual life that found expression in his direction of others. Newman had a mammoth apostolate of correspondence. His Letters and Diaries have been edited and published in a series of thirty-two volumes, embracing more than twenty thousand letters. The first ten volumes deal with Newman's Anglican period; the remaining twenty-two volumes cover his Catholic period and are the primary source for this book. These volumes have been studied chronologically in order to determine and extract the major areas in which Newman gave spiritual direction to others, and to investigate the stages of development in his spiritual advice.

Download or read book Christian Spirituality written by Gordon Mursell and published by Lion Hudson Ltd. This book was released on 2020-02-21 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing interest today in the context and history of Christian spirituality. In this book a team of expert authors from the East and West present a full and fascinating picture of humanity’s desire for the divine across the centuries. Highlighting the contribution of significant figures through history, authors explore the ways in which Christians – from the earliest times onwards – have sought to express and live out the deepest truth of their faith. The Bible and the life of Jesus Christ are the starting point for the story. The reader is then guided through the development of spirituality, starting an exploration of the significance of the early church ‘fathers’, and culminating in a survey of the explosion of expressions of Christian divinity across the world in the twentieth century. Interspersed with boxed features that provide more detail on key individuals and groups, and timelines that put events into their chronological contexts, Christian Spirituality is an ideal overview for scholars and interested readers alike.
