  • Author : Ruben Zaiotti
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2011-04
  • ISBN : 0226977870

Download or read book Cultures of Border Control written by Ruben Zaiotti and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, a number of European countries abolished national border controls in favor of Europe’s external frontiers. In doing so, they challenged long-established conceptions of sovereignty, territoriality, and security in world affairs. Setting forth a new analytic framework informed by constructivism and pragmatism, Ruben Zaiotti traces the transformation of underlying assumptions and cultural practices guiding European policymakers and postnational Europe, shedding light on current trends characterizing its politics and relations with others. The book also includes a fascinating comparison to developments in North America, where the United States has pursued more restrictive border control strategies since 9/11. As a broad survey of the origins, evolution, and implications of this remarkable development in European integration, Cultures of Border Control will be of interest to students and scholars of international relations and political geography.

Book Digital Borders and Real Rights

Download or read book Digital Borders and Real Rights written by Evelien Renate Brouwer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its launch in 1995, the majority of personal data held in the Schengen Information System (SIS) concerns third-country nationals to be refused entry to the Schengen territory. This study reveals why the use of the SIS (and the second generation SIS or SIS II) entails a risk to the protection of human rights such as the right to privacy and the right to data protection, but also the freedom of movement of persons and the principle of non-discrimination. This study describes the implementation of the SIS in respectively France, Germany, and the Netherlands and the available legal remedies in both data protection and immigration law. On the basis of three general principles of European law, minimum standards are developed for effective remedies for individuals registered in the SIS, but also other databases such as Eurodac or the Visa Information System.

Book The Extreme Right in Europe and the USA

Download or read book The Extreme Right in Europe and the USA written by Paul Hainsworth and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of extreme right parties and neo-fascist movements in recent years as a response to economic crisis has become a major concern for most European countries. The phenomenon is likely to increase, as more disillusioned and discontented sectors of the population become drawn towards intense nationalism and the scapegoating of 'foreigners'. Paul Hainsworth has assembled a team of experts in the field to present a comparative, empirical assessment of the historical evolution, nature and extent of the extreme right in Europe and the United States from the 1940s to the early 1990s. This volume evaluates the nature and influence of the extreme right in the post-war context.

Book The Right to Seek Refugee Status in the European Union

Download or read book The Right to Seek Refugee Status in the European Union written by Sylvie Da Lomba and published by Intersentia nv. This book was released on 2004 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book measures EC/EU asylum initiatives against international refugee and human rights standards and makes law reform proposals to ensure compliance with international standards. It identifies four areas of concern: the interpretation of the 1951 Convention definition of a refugee; access to asylum procedures; the establishment of fair and effective procedures; and the asylum seekers' status pending the determination of their asylum claims. The author argues that any departure from international standards by the EU and its Member States risks undermining the right to seek refugee status and protection as a humanitarian concept. The author also considers Member states' laws and practices, with special emphasis on the United Kingdom and France. This inclusion reflects the mutual influence that national and European measures exercise on one another and reveals existing discrepancies and tensions between national laws and practices. The author urges the European Union to remain true to its commitment to the Treaty of Amsterdam and its humanitarian tradition and vision.
